One of the great joys of parenting is staying up late with your child. Sewing up that costume she just has to have for school tomorrow. Helping with another algebra lesson. Or watching a scary movie together. Tonight it's a little different. She is off to her senior prom. She looked beautiful. And I'm sure she'll have a great time. But it's still tough to let go.

Eighteen years ago, God answered our prayers and our little "miracle baby" was born. She grew up running and kicking, laughing and dancing, jumping and reaching. Some-time honor student, part-time angel, full-time goofball, Lauren has been a constant source of amazement to her mother and me. She could talk her mom into rebounding while she worked on her jumpshot. She could con me into a game of Candyland (and beat me every time). But time flies.

Laurent grew up tall and strong with her older brothers Larry, Eric and Joe to lead the way. She started as a Bobcat, then a Bulldog, then a Warrior. Now she takes that first giant step toward adulthood. She'll be attending Cal State Bakersfield and playing volleyball for the Runners. If you see her on the court or meet her on the campus, get to know her and get to know a young woman who is sweet, kind, bright and beautiful. We did, and we love her more than she'll ever know.
Graduation Speech 2007

Good evening parents, teachers, and fellow students and welcome to the East Bakersfield High School class of 2007 graduation. My name is Alexandra Maxwell and I stand before you today as a member of this diverse, aspiring, and all around outstanding class.

As I began to think of the many ways the 2007 graduates mold to the theme of “Waiting on the World to Change” I found that Jimmy Carter, 39th president of the United States, best described the power our class holds when he said, “We have become not a melting pot, but a beautiful mosaic. Different people, different beliefs, different yearnings, different dreams.” East High has come to represent a beautiful mosaic in that we have diverse students that culminate into a beautiful piece of art, which glorifies our differences.

While some may question the term mosaic, I think it exemplifies the distinct benefit of acquiring an education at such a diverse high school in that we are able to create an environment that welcomes students from all different backgrounds, with different beliefs, while not attempting to mold them to one standard, but rather accenting their diversity. This capacity has impressed us with the importance of tolerance within our society.

Furthermore, as a generation that has experienced the technology age, the largest government surplus yet largest deficit, and times of peace and times of war, we have developed an agility to adapt to situations easily, allowing us to not just take life as it comes but recognize the abilities we have been endowed with to overcome challenges.
In the future we will be put in situations where these two abilities will be called upon and although it may seem trivial to experience diversity in high school; these experiences will affect decisions that may forever change the world.

So today, class of 2007, I encourage you to not only recognize these unique traits you have been entrusted with, but to reflect upon them in your future choices. We have had the opportunity to experience diversity as never seen before in the United States, establishing us as one of the most powerful generations to come, and this experience has not come without sacrifice, hard work, and understanding. For this reason we will be the generation to change the world.

I would like to leave you with a quote from Paul McCartney’s song, written for the 8th 007 movie, Live and Let Die. “When you were young and your heart was an open book you used to say live and let live, but in this ever changing world in which we live in, makes you give in and cry, Say live and let die,” I take these lyrics to mean that you must be alive to change, and leave the past as a positive memory. I urge you to remember this line in your daily life for it represents the underpinnings of our total educational experiences here at East High. We will shape the future of the America in which we live.

I can confidently say that this shape of America will be strongly influenced by this mosaic of different backgrounds, resulting in a tolerance of each other and our cultures, alive to change and united in the goal of freedom and justice. Thank you.

This summer, Alexandra will be traveling through Europe. In the fall she will be attending Wellesley College in Boston, MA, with an emphasis on Philosophy. In high school, she participated in Forensic, School Site Council, Cheerleading and was an elected officer of the student body all 4 years. In our community, she was part of the Mayors Youth Council, Jim Burke Ford Dreambuilders, Junior Achievement, Great American Clean-up and many others.

                                            Graduation Speech, Class of 2007

I would like to welcome everyone to this special occasion and congratulate all of the graduates who have worked so hard to be here tonight. It's been a long, tough road and a journey worth while. Thirteen years to be exact... maybe a little longer for some of us. But, the important thing is that we're here and we've made it. But a lot of us wouldn't be here if it weren't for those special people in our lives, whether thy are teachers, family, or friends. The ones who pushed us and made us belive that we're worth more. Those who grabbed us to keep us from falling. When we wanted to give up, convinced ourselves that we just weren't ready for this world. They didn't hesitate to provide encouraging words.

After thanking God, first and froemost, mine personally, among a few others, is my mother who has been the driving force in my life since day one. She nevver turned her back on me no matter how hard it got, i don't know how i could've made it without her and all the comfort and support that came from her arms. She always tells me that when i make it to the top to make sure i give her her alkalades. So, here is the first of many. this goes for all the parents and inspirational figures. Our class would not be here if it weren't for you.

From this day forth we will no longer be seen as seniors in highschool, but as mature adults who must learn to take on new responsibilities. I would love to say that after this commencement, all of our hardships will come to an end. But reality is that they are only beginning. Now is the time for us to prove ourselves, to make use of all the things West High School has taught us since our freshman year. Because life doesn't end here, life doesn't get put on hold, there will be so many more obstacles lying ahead of us. Waiting to pounce at any second; to rob us or our goals, our dreams, our happiness, our determination, our aspirations, the fight that lies within us that forces us to keep striving, to keep believing. We will not give up and we refuse to settle and become another statistic. Silentepidimic.org reports that every 29 seconds a student will drop out of highschool, making up 1 million a year and 1 half of those being minorities. We've already beaten the odds, we've taken chances, and run the right risks to have it all pay off right here, right now to show we ARE the generation that will make the difference.

There are some of us who are honors students with 4.0 g.p.a, then there are those who are athletes, many of us are on our way to trade school. Although we are all unique, we are still somewhat similar. For if you scratch all the grades, froget about all the clubs we were members in, and disregard all the events we've participated in, and were to simply strip us down to what we were truly made of inside our hearts, looking at us as a whole instead of us as individuals, you will see pride, you will see power, you will see honor, you will see confidence, you wil see a West High Viking... committed to academic achievement, committed to personal excellence, and committed to a lifetime of success.

There is an old proverb that reads "only fools despise wisdon and instruction." "Take firm hold of instruction... She is your life. Incline your ear to wisdon and apply your heart to understanding." Our generation will not love simplicity, but will struggle. "To everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven.." well class this is our time, our year to shine bright the brilliant colors of green and gold. We will persevere fro "the race is strong." And in the end we will be able to stand tall. We will shout and warn the world to look out, for we are the graduates from West High School, and the proud class of 2007; we are on our way to a bright and liberating future thanks to all of you. Thankyou.

D'Amber Collins competed in a contest at West High School and was chosen to be the speaker for the class of 2007. She plans on attending California State University Northridge after high school and majoring in psychology.

                                            Graduation Speech, class of 2007

Good Evening, its an honor to speak to you tonight. “Maybe it's up with the stars, Maybe it's under the sea, Maybe it's not very far, Maybe this is how it's supposed to be.” Those were lyrics written and sung by my favorite musician Jack Johnson, and well, I felt compelled to share then with you tonight because as a graduate on my departure from high school I have had countless questions run through my mind these past few weeks. And these were not your usual “what are we doing this weekend? Or did we have any homework?” type questions, these were the life determiners, like what am I going to do next year? What college will I attend? Once I am there what do I want to pursue? We must now ask ourselves who it is we want to be…maybe the answer is up with the stars or under the sea, but I believe that it is not very far. I believe this because one thing is certain, and that is East High has pointed us all in the right direction.

The song continues, “Looking forward as we rewind, Looking back is a trap sometimes, Being here is so easy to do, if you want to.” As I look at the scoreboard as a East High student for the last time I am looking forward to what lies ahead. We will all be stuck with memories from high school whether we like it or not, but being here, at East Bakersfield High School, is so easy to do when you want to. This school has filled us with an amazing amount of opportunities to make memories, whether it be on a sports team, an academic or community service club or group, or somewhere in the arts, so there is no doubt in mind that I will not forget East High. Later in life it may take a bit of fishing, but I will not forget my friends, my teachers, or this campus, and I know your memories will not be forgotten either. This is why we must cherish the past, but not get trapped in it because with a few blessings we have many years ahead of us.

We have all worked hard for these diploma’s, but let us not be complacent. I know each and every one of you has a dream, I know not everyone can throw a 70 yard Hail Mary to win the super bowl, but let us not shoot too low quite yet. I dream to become a doctor one day, and I know that each of you has a similar dream in mind. I say our goal should simply be to not let our dreams be dreams. We have the foundation under us, so why not rise up from it? We have a new picture to look at ladies and gentlemen, and it is looking beautiful. Its beauty is in that it is left for us to paint, so let’s paint a picture that the world will not forget, just as we will not forget the mark we left here at East Bakersfield High. In the words of Bob Dylan “If you want to keep your memories, you first have to live them.” We have all lived out ours here at East, I wish you the best of luck living out new ones in the future. Thank you all, its been a blast, and let’s change the world class. May God always bless the Class of 2007.

Well, here we are. Congratulations Class of ’07, you’ve made it through high school. Now it’s time for phase two. You see, high school is like the hill before the mountain. Once you get over it, you feel great. But then you see that mountain, looming in your path. It’s bigger, the paths are rockier, and everything becomes more intimidating. It’s incredibly daunting, and it’s okay to be scared, but don’t let it stop you because there are many challenges that you will have to confront.

There’s the challenge of furthering your education. Whether you choose to attend a college or university or a vocational or technical school, there will be bumps in the road either way. There’s the challenge of deciding on a career path. There are those like my sister who have known since the fourth grade what they want to do for a living. There are those who think they know, but will end up changing their mind. Then there is the majority, completely and utterly undecided about what they are going to choose. Whichever category you fall under, you are likely to run into plenty of obstacles. Then there’s the challenge of the future. 46 years ago, John F. Kennedy said, “Ask not what your country can do for you – ask what you can do for your country.” In the near future, we will no longer be students; we will be the leaders of America. How will we address problems such as an increasing national deficit, global warming, and stem cell research? It will be up to us to tackle these issues and face them head on.

So how do you want to be remembered? Are we going to go down in the history books, or will we simply be a footnote? Are we going to be the ones to decrease the nation’s dependence on fossil fuels, the ones to design solutions for social security and universal healthcare, the ones to find cures for juvenile diabetes, cancer, and AIDS? Or will we be known for apathy and total self-indulgence? These issues are not going away. It isn’t a question of whether we will have to deal with them or not; it’s a question of when and how. I know that I want to help change the world, even the smallest piece at a time. For me, that probably means volunteering my time and money to various charitable organizations. But what does it mean for you? What are you going to do to improve our future? It’s a question only you can answer, and I challenge you to think about it.

To reach distant places, you have to take the first step. Once again, congratulations class of 2007 for getting this far. Just remember that a challenging journey lies before you, but never be afraid to keep moving forward.

There are 3 ways to say “we’re graduating.”
    (Excited) “We’re graduating!”
    (Astonished) “We’re graduating?”
    (Horrified) “We’re graduating?!”

In the words of Dr. Hairist Hill, we are about to “step into the future. We are going to maximize our potential. Clap your hands if you agree!”

As we take a look back at high school, day to day we had the same routine. We would get up: Girls you’d look in the mirror and say “we’ve got work to do!’ Guys, you’d look in the mirror and say, “looks good to me!” We’d go to class … then we’d gorge ourselves at lunch. Every once in a while we’d have some food sale days, dunk some teachers, and always, hang out with friends. We’d finish the day with a few more classes and leave with a smile because we aced the last test or a frown because our phone got taken away and once again we had Saturday work! Memories.

All in all, it was a pretty safe routine, and yet it was very much like a rollercoaster! We had our ups: dances, plays, games, watching the Bananas! Who could forget those Banana Boys!? We had our downs: break-ups, break-outs, too much homework or the worst: no Prom date. What a ride it was!

But, we pulled through and got ourselves where we are tonight. Each one of us should be proud of that, so let’s say “thanks!” Thank you parents for being there and not letting us give up when we wanted to. Thank you teachers for your encouragement, your “moral stories” and the lessons you taught us on how to succeed in life. Thank you friends for making high school an unforgettable memory. You guys are definitely “Baaalin!!!!!”

So here we are. Let’s not forget this moment. Look at the person to the right of you. Look at the person to the left of you. Look all around you, and always remember this Stockdale class… our class of 2007!

Lily has been very active at Stockdale High as a Thespian enjoying every minute possible on stage. She also spent 3 years in the Varsity Football program as the Water Girl and was a Bible Club Officer for 3 years. Probably the most remarkable thing about Lily is that 14 years ago she arrived here from a Romanian Orphanage with no English at all. In just a few years she was winning every Oral Language contest she entered and thrives on the stage. It's this gifting and can-do attitude that made her a natural to speak before her peers. She is touched and honored at the opportunity.

Good evening. My name is Luz Maria Kumpel. I am the 2007 senior class president. Thank you for coming to our commencement ceremony.

Stockdale High School opened in the year 1991. Since then, thousands of students have completed their high school education there — in an environment as safe, diverse and high-achieving as any in America. The class of 2007 has been an important part of what defines Stockdale as a place of excellence. The diplomas these students are receiving today not only represent the education they have received, but the experience they have had for the past four years.

Stockdale high school offers something for all of its more than 2,500 students. Students were able to participate in medical academy, applied engineering, commercial graphics, agricultural studies, virtual business enterprise and construction technology programs. The graduates here today have been part of teams both academically and athletically that have competed and been recognized on the local and national levels.
Stockdale’s multiple community service programs all together called Stockdale Cares have won awards. But more importantly have had an impact on community life that will be felt for many years to come.

The many achievements that students from this class have made have given them the opportunity to attend schools next year like Notre Dame, UC Berkeley, UC Santa Barbara, UC Irvine, UC San Diego, UCLA, USC, Princeton, Yale, Columbia, New York University, University of Texas at Austin, Cal Poly, Cal State Bakersfield, Westpoint, Bakersfield College and the Air Force Academy.

It’s no wonder Stockdale remains the leading high school in Kern County at placing seniors at four-year institutions.

On behalf of the class of 2007, I would like to thank you, parents and friends, for being here today. Although you are here in celebration of our achievements, I belive you have played a vital role in the success that brings us here today.

To the teachers and staff, thank you for your inspiration and encouragement that has helped us to excel and believe in ourselves. For many of you, youre life’s work is preparing us for what is next in our lives and you’ve done a good job.

And to my fellow classmates, no one can take away what you have learned in the classroom these past four years. But more importantly, the same is true for what you have learned about yourselves, your friends and your life. And although this ceremony is an accomplishment that is just a step toward what is next in your lives, it will always be special that there was a time and place we spent together, as a unified entity, as a class.

What we are here for, our graduation, is something each of us is commended for individually, but memorable because we are doing it together. The friends and familiar faces that we have come to know, depend on, and love may change as we step off this stage and into the future. But all of those things — the triumphs, the laughs, the fun, the adversities, the excitement, the adventure, and the people we shared them with — those things all really happened and Stockdale was the common ground that brought us together, giving rise to the opportunity for those things to take place.

Each of you is an irreplaceable element of what gives our class its uniqueness and character. I hope that all of you remember this great day, this momentous occassion. But more so, I hope you remember all the moments that have lead up to today and give this event true meaning.

When you reflect on all of the cherished memories we’ve shared at Stockdale, I hope that it always brings a smile to your face.

Mustangs now — Mustangs forever. Thank you.
Graduation speech

Good Evening everyone and welcome to the graduation for the class of 2007.

Tonight is a turning point in our lives. We have struggled through four long years together to make it to this stadium. -- to wear these ridiculous looking caps and gowns as our families watch us proudly. However, tonight is more than just a ceremony, It is the closing to a dramatic chapter in our lives, and the opening to a new and exciting story yet to be written.

I personally want to thank all of the teachers and faculty of North High. With their incredible intelligence and creativity, they have spent the last four years of their lives skillfully and meticulously crafting us into mature young adults —Well….. Some of us more than others.

Lastly, I want to express how proud I am of myself, my friends, and everyone else up on this stage. I hope we all enjoy the rest of our night, and especially the rest of our lives. I leave you with this. Author Michael Konda once said…

“The fastest way to succeed in life is to look as if you are playing by somebody else’s rules, while quietly playing by your own.”

Thank you and Congratulations class of 2007
Three Kinds of People

                                            Welcome graduates of 2007,

It has been said that there are three kinds of people you meet in your life: one for a reason, one for a season, and one for a lifetime. Although these people are different, they have one thing in common; they help shape and mold us into the people we grow to become in our lives. They are responsible for the kinds of people we are today.

The first kind of person is the person you meet for a reason. This is that person you see walking through the hallway, or down the street. You smile at this person as they pass simply because it is the polite thing to do, but soon after, they fall into the back of your mind, and they are out of your life forever.

The next kind of person is the person you meet for a season. This is that person you sat next to on the first day of school, and made friends with just because you didn’t want to be alone. They are not a true friend, but merely and acquaintance with whom you are able to laugh and joke with for those forty-five minutes of everyday. You may make memories with this person, however, just like the first, the memories of this person quickly fade, and just as quickly as you introduced yourself, you cannot recall this person’s name.

Then, there is the person you meet for a life-time. This is that person who you cannot imagine your life without; this person is in every memory that crosses your mind, and the one you see when you think about the future. When you look back, you realize that this person has always been there and you hope that they always will be. We all have these kind of people in our lives, and unlike the first two, this kind of person will always be apart of us.

Throughout our high school careers, we have all met these three kinds of people. We’ve met those who we know, and we’ve also met those who we hope we never forget. Here at Foothill, we have formed bonds that will last far beyond this day. No matter where life takes us, whether to college, or into the work place, let us enter life not forgetting these three people. Although we may forget many faces, we will always remember the ones we meet for a life-time. These are our closest friends, our teachers, and our coaches, but most of all, these kinds of people are our parents. Their non-stop support has put us where we are today. They continued to believe in us, even when we doubted ourselves. We are here today for them, and we are today here because of them. A simple “thank you” can not begin to explain how grateful I am for everything my parents have done for me, and I know all of you feel the same way. The guidance and support of our parents has made us able to be a part something that is a true privilege, graduation.

When we look back on our high school experiences, every memory we take with us involves these kinds of people. We owe everything to them, because when we think of high school, their faces and the time we spent together are what we are going to remember the most. They are what make high school one of the most memorable experiences in your life. With their help, we have each been able to find our own unique personalities, because they have made us the people we are.

I now leave you with this: as we each venture off into the world, always remember that, wherever we go, we will never be alone. We will always have our parents, and we will always have our friends, to be there when we need them the most. For some, this is the last time we will see many of the people around us, but for others, this is just the beginning of life-long friendships. As we all walk out of here as Foothill graduates, remember those who we meet for a reason and remember those who we meet for a season, but always keep by your side those who we have met for a lifetime.

                                                                                    -Thank You
I'm sure we can all remember the first day of school. For many of us, high school seemed enormous compared to junior high. What made it even scarier for me was not having all of my old friends with me. I was once again the little fish in the ocean. To add to my worries, I feared that I would get stuffed into the trash can. Which I was told by my three older brothers was what happened to new freshman. With all of this going on in my mind, I felt so lost and confused. I was constantly hoping that I would fit in and would make new friends.

Once I actually started high school, I realized that there were many times that I embarrassed myself and I’m sure all of you can say the same thing. I was constantly being reminded of how much I didn't know. For example, when I first went into Mr. Bell’s classroom thinking that the United States was actually a state. At first, being in the classroom and around many smart students made me question my intelligence at first. However, Once I got into my classes I began to love being here. The teachers were extremely funny. I can still remember first meeting Mr. Bolstad. He constantly made us laugh with many of his descriptive jokes. And then there were things I will never comprehend such as why people would begin clapping in Mrs. Richmond’s class for no reason. That’s how it is with many of the teachers here. At first you are intimidated, but once you were in their classroom and become familiar with them you began to feel at ease and realize your fears are unjustified.

Getting used to this new environment was probably difficult for many of us. Everyone handled it a little differently. At first some kids tried to act tougher than they really were while others hid from the crowd. However, it was the start of something new and we were just trying to find our position at Foothill. Before starting Foothill High, we were all young, immature, silly kids; we thought everything was funny and clung onto our own specific cliques. For many of us this still may be true, but we have grown and are not as immature as we once were. Once we got the feel of high school, we started to grow as young adults. Each year we experienced new things and met someone new. We learned how to associate with many people and we became close to the people in our classes.

Meeting my classmates and spending my class time with them was very fun and exciting, Because of them I was able to get through all of my classes especially calculus we all know how hard that could get..

In the last four years at Foothill I have developed close friendships as I’m sure all of you have. I have met people who have made a big impact on my life. They were there for me when I needed them most. I know all of you can say the same thing whether it was your boyfriend/girlfriend, friends or teachers. Every one of us has met someone who has helped us get through these past years, someone who has helped us find out who we really were. But All of these experiences are now just memories because today is the day we graduate from high school.

Graduation, that’s an important accomplishment. We have all worked so hard to be here today and it is our time to show our teachers and parents what they have molded us into. It is now up to us to make them proud and to take everything we have learned and experienced here at Foothill High and put it to use. This is our last day to be shielded; tomorrow we step into the real world as adults. We will have to take matters into our own hands, rather than having our teachers there to tell us what to do, to give us a second and even third chance. We now must rely on ourselves rather than others.

And so, just like 4 years ago, We are back to square one. We will no longer be seniors, but scared freshmen once again. We will step into the real world as young, inexperienced adolescents. We will go through the same steps, facing The fear of being thrown into, not a trash can, but something much more scary and permanent. We might fail. But hopefully, we will succeed. Plus, we will experience new things, meet new people, and make new memories.

For most of us this will be the last day we see each other. We will all go our own separate ways. It is hard to believe that just last week we were all together in class gossiping about the latest break-up or mishap and In a year we probably won’t even remember half of those people’s names. All we will have left are goofy pictures and signed yearbooks. And even though Nothing can replace our memories of being here, we can not be afraid to move on . It was once said that today is not the end, just the end of a special chapter in the book of our lives. Tomorrow we begin a new chapter.

I wish you all the best of luck in whatever you do. whether it is a job or college, we are all facing the same challenges. And, I know that we will always remember the special moments we shared. Today will be the last day we’ll all be together as a school, as a class, as the class of 2007 so enjoy today and once again good luck on your exciting new chapter.

Congratulations class of 2007 we made it.
Good evening teachers, students, family, friends, and graduating class of 2007. Throughout our lives, every one of us accumulates mass amounts of one particular thing. This one thing brings us joy, sorrow, smiles, and tears. It affects how we see the world and even the choices we make.

What is this thing? Memory. Many of my fellow students will forever remember me as the enthusiastic and almost over-zealous weather dude here at East Bakersfield High, but I will always remember so much more than just the wacky things I’ve done here at my high school. There are faces and events that I have experienced here within the past four years that are forever etched into my soul, and I know this is true for each and every graduating student today. Let me bring back the memories of my first day here at East Bakersfield High school as an example.

I remember starting school on a Thursday because my family and I had been slightly late in returning from a trip overseas. I met the sweetest woman as a counselor who registered me for the best classes I could possibly take, and even took the time to introduce me to my first period teacher. By that time, however, it was already second period, so she showed me to my next classroom and I was on my way. The moment I walked through the door, I experienced a step into an absolutely new phase of life. I saw faces I had known for years and some I have never seen before, but I can swear to you that every single one of them must have been smiling at me because, no matter how new the situation was to me, I felt completely comfortable. That is East Bakersfield High school.

Fast forward time a small amount and come around to my sophomore year. I had moved overseas for a semester to study, but I returned for my second semester again at East high, and once again, I was welcomed with open arms and loving hearts. Not only did I make a substantial amount of friends all over again that year, but I realized so much about life and the unbreakable bond between loved ones, and no matter where I go within East high, I know I can be comfortable with any given person within the entire campus. And through the last two years, I have come to realize that I will never have shame or fear of telling others that my high school is East Bakersfield High school, and I will always love my peers and the staff.

When the ceremony tonight is through, groups of friends will reminisce together about the good times we’ve lived: the misfortune each of us has run into, the silly things we’ve done, and the many laughs we’ve shared over the years. Of course, we also will come to discuss our plans for the future and the directions each of us will take in the time to pass. Yet, we should all keep in mind that all of our memories from East high will still hold strong in our hearts and effect our choices as young adults. And we must always remember to learn from those experiences, but with all the memories we all may share here tonight, there may be a presence of the less pleasant thoughts.

Our former students who are unable to join us here tonight, the heartbreak that a high school student is bound to live, and the knowledge that these are our last moments as students of East High. But don’t let this make you sad; we are all a family here. And as your brother, I am here to remind you that no matter what happens or how much time passes, you can never break the bond with your family, and we will always be here for one another. The support which any of us gives to you now will always be available, and a helping hand will always be laid out from your East High family.

So, my friends, as the final word from your brother here and now: never forget your past here at East Bakersfield high, and take these experiences forward into life to become the most successful and positive human beings that you possibly can. Thank you and congratulations class of 2007!

Looking out at my fellow graduates, over 500 of you, I see many different faces. I see the familiar faces that I call my friends, those that I share passing glances with in the hallways and those that I now wish I could have been better acquainted with.

I wish I could say that we all knew each other well and that we could all reflect on the same memories because it would be so much easier to recount specific experiences that have impacted each of our lives. I wish we could all have shared irrepressible laughter over Ms. Richard’s circus stories that taught us verisimilitude or vented frustration over Mr. Reynier’s project that made us explore the deepest recesses of the Cal State library. NOW, we may not have sat next to each other at a football game, but we have all rooted for the same football team; we may not have cheered for the same person at the talent show, but we have all marched to the same beat of our band's drums and sat under the same stifling sun during our first rally. And it wasn't too long ago that we tasted that same anxiety and uneasiness as freshmen.

Three and a half years ago, I was in the same state of mind that we will all be in in a few short weeks when we go to college. Having just moved here from Massachusetts, my heart was filled with vexing emotions of uncertainty, questioning and self-doubt. Would I ever fit in? Even the language made me feel like an outsider—my bubbler—your drinking fountain, my frappes—your milkshakes and my jimmies—your chocolate sprinkles. Away from my comfort zone of my middle school on the East coast, I had to carve new friendships and formulate a perfect impression. But gradually, I found my place in the mosaic that is BHS. And as my high school career comes to an end tonight, it STRIKES me for the first time that in this ever-morphing mosaic, our individual contributions will never be forgotten. We will forge the beautiful pieces we worked so hard to create over these last 4 years into the foundation of the masterpiece that will be our lives.

What I’ll miss the most about BHS is not its arduous academics, the welcoming campus or the insightful instructors, but the invaluable personalities that entertained and enlightened me over the years. No matter how diverse Berkeley may be, I doubt it could harbor someone as brilliantly bizarre as Henry Blanton or the hilariously inappropriate yet softhearted Mark Kimball. What campus but our BHS could foster a character such as Phillip Thomas who not only raps like Ludacris and plays like Jerry Rice but maintains an inspirational level of humility, modesty and compassion.

People like these make me realize how fortunate I am to have spent my high school years at an extraordinary place like BHS. Who knows what the future holds in store for us?. We’ve learned from our parents, our friends and ourselves that we’ll make mistakes and shed more than our share of tears. But what matters most is that we’re leaving as unified, strong Drillers. Armed with perseverance, tenacity and determinacy, I know that we WILL accomplish whatever we put our minds to. We’ll learn from our mistakes and emerge stronger than ever. We have the freedom to dream, the freedom to dare and the freedom to unlock ALL of our potential.

Words can’t express my gratitude to Molly Porter and Mark Kimball for some amazing tips on my speech. I’d also like to congratulate my fellow valedictorians, Michael, Alyssa and Isabel--it’s truly a privilege to share this honor with you.

We may be moving on as future Golden Bears, Bulldogs, Tritons, Generals, or for Angelea Selleck, Dutch in a whole new country, but we started out on this journey as Drillers and although it may take us places, we will always come back as Drillers. Congratulations, Class of 2007, and God Bless.
Graduation Speech, Class of 2007

My fellow graduates: here we sit today, bedecked in our billowing robes, sashes, and tassels, eager to graduate from high school and step out into the world. When we first walked onto this campus, we were like smooth, unformed balls of clay, impressionable and absorbing our new and unfamiliar surroundings. Many people have shaped us into who we are today, including our wonderful family and friends, and we are grateful for their love and support.

But let us not forget those who have made Bakersfield High School our home away from home, who have been with us during every step of our journey, who have guided us through every obstacle and illuminated us with the light of wisdom, fortitude, and character—our hard-working counselors, our resourceful principal, and, especially, our dedicated teachers. From them, we learned academic lessons such as how to hop on the mole train and recite the mole chant; that one rabbit plus one station wagon do not equal two; that exclamatory “shriek marks” should be implied, and not stated; that Mein Kampf does not mean “My Life as a Sunflower;” and that physics tests are not supposed to be finished. But most importantly, our teachers have taught us lessons that we can carry with us throughout the rest of our journey, that serve a practical as well as an educational purpose, that fuse “schooling” with our education.

For how else would we have known that a recent high school graduate can subsist entirely on the three basic food groups—Top Ramen, hot dogs, and macaroni and cheese—and that shower shoes should be worn at all times in a communal bathroom? That we can evade alcohol at a party by sashaying down the aisle with a bottle of Squirt? And essential skills of the utmost importance to our future, such as lighting cheap Albertsons matches and executing the ultimate Scrabble strategy?

Along with our loved ones, our teachers—our mentors—have formed and shaped us into elegant and refined statues that hold our identities and our core system of beliefs and define who we are today. Our teachers have helped us lay the blocks of our foundation that hold our statue upright with strength and conviction. Without their guidance, we would have swayed, perhaps even toppled over, at the slightest wind of change, at the slightest hint of uncertainty that made us question what we held to be true—our faith, our assumptions, our paradigms.

It is my hope that when we, the newest graduates of Bakersfield High School, venture out into the world to assume a job or pursue an academic degree, we will all find a mentor to support us, encourage us, teach us, hold us up and make us stand strong and proud, just like our teachers here did for us. It is my hope that we will develop our gifts and talents to the highest degree, always striving for prosperity and never settling for mediocrity. It is my hope that we will continue to be guided by the teachers of today, and, in turn, pass on our wisdom to future generations and become the teachers of tomorrow. Congratulations, Class of 2007, and wherever your academic and vocational paths may take you, one thing is certain: “Once a Driller, always a Driller”—the bonds of tradition transcend generations.

Alyssa Henning is one of four valedictorians from Bakersfield High School, and will be attending Cornell University in the fall. She plans to continue her education with Cornell's five-year Biomedical Engineering program, where she will eventually receive a Bachelor's degree in Molecular and Cell Biology with a minor in Biomedical Engineering in four years and her Masters in Engineering after her fifth year.

This is my daughter Alex Rosales, to her friends she is known as Aly. I am very proud of her and all that she has accomplished in the 4 years at Golden Valley High School. She is part of the full 4 year graduating class for this new school.

The sports she participated in were Varsity Volleyball, Soccer, & Softball. She has excelled in all of these sports, receiving (3) MVP Awards, (2) Coach’s Awards, (3) Most Inspirational Awards, (2) Most Dedicated Awards, (3) 1st Team All League Awards, (2) 2nd Team All League Awards, and (1) Honorable Mention Team All League Award. She was Captain for Volleyball for two years and Captain for Soccer all four years. She practices and travels with her Volleyball club. She received the Jockey Club Award for softball in her Junior Year.

At this time she is serving as Senior Class President, enjoying the challenges it brings. She was chosen by her class as “Most Athletic”. She received GVHS Outstanding Student Award in Physical Education, GVHS Outstanding Student Athlete Award, and Principal’s Award. She was chosen to be one of the spokespersons for the Smart & Sober Graduation commercial.

While doing all these activities she still made time for her studies. She has a strong spirit, and I know she will succeed in anything she sets her mind to. She will be continuing her education at California State University-Fresno where she will be studying Kinesiology. She tells me “Once a Bulldog Always a Bulldog”.

Throughout the life of your child, you learn to stand by and watch. Sometimes it hurts to watch -- for different reasons. When my daughter Morgen Dang was little, it hurt to watch her fall down. As an adolescent, it hurt to watch her make her own mistakes. But then, how else does one learn? Now that she is about to graduate from West High School, there isn't enough kleenex to soften the hurt of letting go.

This picture pretty much sums it up for her. She and her friend Nici Mills had just met with their new counselors at Bakersfield College to map out a plan of where to go from here. They parked nearby on the bluffs and took in the beautiful panoramic view. After a year of ever creeping "senior-itis" they were euphoric at the newly found freedom that comes from moving forward.

Her father Alex, Aunt Alice and I are naturally very proud of her. In a year when many skate through with easy classes, Morgen chose to continue a demanding schedule of AP physics, economics, statistics, psychology, Spanish and English. She is a mediator on the West High Conflict Mediation Team. She received MVP on the varsity swim team. She received scholarships from the Bakersfield Chinese Women's Club and Mayor Harvey Hall. Morgen also graduated from the 2007 Chamber of Commerce Youth Leadership Program and is a Presidential Scholar for Bakersfield College.

When asked what title she would give to this picture, only one word would suffice. Yippee!

Academically, Nick has always given a 100 percent effort. Even after choosing to enroll in Stockdale High School’s most challenging classes, he is graduating at the top of his class with a 4.36 GPA. His efforts haven’t gone unrewarded—this fall Nick will be attending the University of Southern California’s prestigious Viterbi School of Engineering as a Dean’s Scholar (fight on!). He will be studying Civil Engineering. In addition, Nick will be interning at a top engineering corporation in San Francisco this summer.

Outside the classroom, Nick has dedicated himself to community service. Through his participation in the Dream Builder’s program, he was part of an award-winning team that brought a drinking and driving awareness program to Bakersfield’s high schools. He has also served as a role-model for local elementary students through the “Lunch Buddies” program, and as a volunteer at local retirement homes.

Nick has also excelled in two of his favorite hobbies, golf and piano. He played three years of Varsity Golf at Stockdale and was named All-League for his outstanding scoring average. This year he also competed in and passed his ninth level of the “Certificate of Merit” piano competition, which reflects 12 years of dedication to piano practice.

These accomplishments didn’t come without obstacles. During his sophomore year, Nick was diagnosed with a condition called “AV Nodal Re-entrant Tachycardia.” It required not one, but two heart surgeries. Despite this frightening experience, he retained his focus, and continued to excel. It was an experience that revealed Nick’s genuine qualities: honesty, strength, dedication and a true passion for life.

Above all else, Nick has been a wonderful brother and best friend. He has many exciting opportunities ahead, and his friends and family cannot wait to see what he will accomplish. I am confident that, more likely than not, he will once again far exceed all our expectations. Congratulations Nick!

Amanda Haney is a senior at Liberty High School. She has been very active on campus and off throughout her school years. She has maintained a 4.4 grade point average in high school.

This last year she was chosen to participate in the Ford Foundation Dream Builders in which her group won the top award for their moving presentation call Every Fifteen Minutes. They have made it into a video and have presented it to other high schools, hoping to get the message to teens about drinking and driving and its consequences. For this effort, she won the California Highway Patrol Commander Certificate of Commendation.

She has received several scholarships and awards from Bakersfield Jr. Miss American Legion, the Spanish Club, the Math Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society and is in the California Scholarship Federation, a Gold Seal recipient.

She is in the choir that will be singing at Carnegie Hall in New York on May 27. She is also an active member of the Bible Club on campus.

She works part-time at Foot and Ankle Institute, which is helping her in her career choice. She will be attending Long Beach State University next year, majoring in kinesiology and minoring in dance.

From the time she was three years old, she has danced for Dancers Workshop. Now she is helping to teach the 3 and 4 year olds. She has received several awards for her dancing. Last year she received the Most Exemplary Dancer award at her studio. She also dances with a group of girls that have danced in California and Las Vegas for competition where they have won many awards. One summer vacation she was privileged to dance with the New York Rocket's dance program.

Amanda has worked very hard to accomplish and maintain her good grades, her other accomplishments and activities and her family wants her to know how very proud of her they are.

Kate Greenwood has always been a high achiever. Even in Kindergarten, the teacher selected her to be the first one to take the milk money to the office because she saw Kate’s maturity and desire to do her best. Throughout grade school, teachers appreciated the interest and inspiration she brought to her classes. Her projects were done with genuine interest in the subject and, of course, she had to ‘out do’ any example the teacher had presented to the class.

Straight ‘A’s and excellent class work was not all that Kate has strove to attain. She has always wanted to give back to her school, classmates and society. She has been able to do this by becoming involved in clubs and youth groups. As an officer of the Liberty High Bible Club, she initiated the sponsorship of Silvia, a child from El Salvador, through Compassion International. As the design editor for Liberty’s yearbook, she worked hard to provide multiple interesting and innovative templates, captions and spreads. As a member of the Riverlakes Community Bible Church youth leadership team, she has helped to build houses and relationships in Mexico, prayed for her fellow students and been an example of Christian virtues to her peers. As a Sunday School teacher at Riverlakes, Kate has also reached out to 3rd and 4th graders with the love Jesus Christ has placed in her heart.

By Kate’s achievements, one might think that she hasn’t had too many other responsibilities. However, this isn’t true. Kate has twin sisters Emily and Laura, only two years younger than herself. Emily has cerebral palsy and is unable to walk or do many things for herself. Kate has always been a very attentive big sister and has helped Emily have a ‘normal’ childhood. From the time Kate was only a few years old, she has included Emily in many of her activities; even if it meant picking her up and carrying her to another room. Daily during the grade school years, Kate helped to push Emily to and from school in her wheelchair and helped her participate in parties and sleep-overs. She has helped Emily with homework, art work, hobbies and making friends. Currently, as high school students, the three sisters regularly enjoy a ‘girls’ date out, undaunted by the inconvenience of accessibility issues.

Now, graduating from Liberty High with the number one ranking, Kate is ready to begin a new adventure. As UC Berkeley provides the backdrop for this adventure, it is time for me to step back and let her spread her wings. Kate will soar! And we will miss her greatly!

Congratulations Kate! We love you! Mom, Dad, Laura, and Emily

Justine Jasmine Velasco is graduating from West High School on June 1, 2007. Justine is the oldest of our four daughters. She's had it a little rough, since as parents we were making decisions about the important things for the first time.

She has always done her best in school. She has taken multiple AP and Honors classes during her four years in high school. She has maintained an average GPA of 4.425. She is graduating number two in her class.

Throughout high school she has performed in school plays. She attended the Shakespearean Festival in Utah the past two years, volunteered at the American Cancer Society's Discovery Shop, and has been involved in various school organizations, such as Roots N Shoots, Conflict Mediation, Drama Club, Vegetarian Club, Academic Decathalon, Science Bowl, Math Field Day, and the Physics Olympics.

Over the summer of 2006, she tutored summer school classes, and attended COSMOS. COSMOS is a UC math and science program. She has been published in Who's Who among High School Scholars for the past two years, and also in the National Honor Roll. She is a lifetime member of National Honor Society and California Scholarship Federation. Justine will be attending the top public college in the nation for engineering, UC Berkeley, in the fall.

Justine is a good role model for her younger sisters. Her family is very proud of her accomplishments.

On Tuesday, May 15th Sara is looking to hit well, maybe even another grand slam to help bring BCHS a victory in the 1st round of CIF playoffs. She started the season off with a grand slam in a pre-league game as well as one hit a few weeks ago to help BCHS secure playoffs position. Sara is a 4 year varsity catcher who loves the game! She has been awarded “All League” for the last 3 years, “Honorable Mention – All City” as a freshman catcher, as well as receipt ant of California State Legislative Award.

Her “Grand Slam” however, consists of more than high school softball. She has also played Varsity Tennis at BCHS for 4 years. This fall, BCHS won the Division V Valley Women’s Tennis Championship. She proudly wears the Championship Ring given to her by Coach Frank Thiessen as the number 2 single player for the team. She has also played year-round “travel softball” since she was twelve. Playing in several national softball tourneys, Sara has given up weekends, holiday and summers to travel all over California, as well as to Nevada, Idaho, Illinois, Georgia, and Florida to play competitive softball.

She has been very active in school government/leadership. Starting with her freshman year and through her senior year she has been elected by the student body for positions such as: Student Body Board of Athletes, Student Body Board of Finance, Freshman and Senior Class Representative. She has attended several local high school leadership seminars, as well as a two week National high school leadership workshop in Washington, D. C.

Sara has also been very active in the social committee of BCHS, as part of the 1st incoming class of the new campus; she was very active with planning of all school social activities such as winter formals, proms, school retreats, and 2 European trips. She also help establish BCHS community service clubs; Key Club, Relay for Life, Habitat for Humanity. This is addition to (very) active regular teenage social agenda.

Most importantly, however, are her academic accomplishments! She has taken every Advanced Placement/Honors Class available, and has a cumulative GPA of over 4.40. She was accepted at several well known colleges (UCSB, UCSD, Berkeley, Loyola Marymount and Columbia). She has chosen to attend University of Chicago where she will be majoring in International Economics, while also continuing to play softball as a collegiate catcher!

Sara may be hoping to hit a grand slam in the upcoming CIF Championships. Looks like she already has!

Sara has also set up an annual scholarship award ($1,000) for women scholar athletes at BCHS. This will be her 3rd year of selecting candidates and has is looking forward to working with the senior counselor in the future years.

We would like to share with you our beautiful and courageous daughter Mihaela Champion who will graduate from Stockdale High School on May 30. Mihaela has had to overcome many obstacles, especially during her senior year as she has watched her father and brother (also a senior at Stockdale) battle cancer. In spite of the challenges, Mihaela has persevered both academically and especially spiritually as she has stepped up to the plate in supporting her brother and father. We thank you Mihaela for bringing home homework, rallying Chris' friends to support him, for always doing that extra chore, for finding that teacher to help your brother, for never complaining but always being willing, for giving your love and support unconditionally, for often sacrificing your desires for your family, and especially being such a loving and giving daughter. These things did not go unnoticed. We are humbled by your strength and your kind and giving heart. You are truly beautiful and we are so proud and honored to call you our daughter. Happy Graduation. Love, Mom and Dad

Mandy Morley truly exemplifies the Rebel spirit. From the minute she became a Rebel, she has been a committed, focused, hard-working student. Not only does she strive to do well academically, holding a GPA of 3.7 or higher every semester, but has been a three-sport scholar athlete as well as active in many campus clubs, holding officer positions in many of those. She is definitely a leader on the South High campus. This year, she is ASB President, Criminal Justice Academy President, President of the Interact Club and Treasurer of the Alpine Club. She also serves on the School Site Council and is a member of both the California Scholarship Foundation and National Honor Society. What is impressive about Mandy is that she not only is active on the South High campus, but in the community as well. She has been a member of the Sheriff’s Explorer Post, planted trees, participated in Adoption Day sponsored by the Department of Human Services and, most notably, was a member of the Jim Burke Ford Dream Builders Team. Mandy also works part-time at a local Taco Bell.

Mandy’s hard work and dedication has not gone unnoticed. Earlier this year, she was the recipient of the Optimist Club Glendon Rogers Outstanding Student Award and served as the Mayor of Bakersfield for a day. This summer, she participated in the Youth Citizenship Seminar held at Pepperdine University. On April 23, 2007, she received her most prestigious recognition thus far. She was the recipient of a Bank of America Plaque of Achievement Award. This is awarded to students who have outstanding records of performance in a general study area and who are actively involved in school and community activities and have some type of work experience. More than 3,200 students win in these categories each year. However, out of these 3,200 honorees, only 320 are selected to compete in ten regional competitions on the basis of how successfully they balance their academic work with their extra-curricular activities. Mandy was one of those selected to compete in the applied arts category. It is important to note South High has not had a participant in this event for over ten years. Congratulations!

Mandy has been accepted to Chapman University as a Liberal Arts major.

Ricardo Antonio Herrera, also known as "Richie," is a senior attending Liberty High School. He is my big brother and I look up to him a lot. I can’t wait to see him graduate on May 31.

I am very proud of my brother. He played football and basketball during all of his years in high school. Richie won many awards on these teams, even a few MVP awards. Richie also had many hard classes, including four AP and Honors classes. My brother is a member of the Spanish Honor Society and the Safe School Ambassadors.

These are the last few months I will ever live with my brother. This fall he will be leaving to go to college at UC Santa Barbara. His time at Santa Barbara will be to help him become a pharmacist. Richie’s roomate will be Joseph Marcus who was Tuesday, May 15 Saluted Graduate.

Salute to Graduates — Nektoe Demison of Bakersfield High School

Nektoe Dewayne Demison Jr. is graduating from Bakersfield High School this year and your family wants you to know how proud of you we are. As sophmores in high school, we had you. As we have raised you, we now see how much you also raised us into the parents we are today.

Among your many accomplishments, your biggest was your strive to be the best. As we put you into sports as a teenager, you never got discouraged, but yet tried harder. You have worked so hard to be an excellent student, athlete, son, friend and peer. You have had some awesome teachers who have seen the uniqueness in you and have pushed you to keep succeeding. You continue to keep reaching goals, but yet still underestimate your worth.

You have a heart of gold and always think of others before yourself. Your sacrifices for your family are always done with a smile on your face and love in your heart. We realize how hard it is to change schools your senior year, but you again did it without a thought and made the best of it.

This wrestling season, we saw how hard you worked and you have set the precedence for your brothers and sister. Your LOYALTY to your family and being the best you can be add to your already wonderful character. You have set the foundation for them and we love, admire and respect you for that.

We love you Nektoe and are so proud of you. As you are preparing for college and continuing to think of others first, we want what is best for YOU. You have worked so hard and deserve all the great things that are happening to you. The world is yours Nektoe! Congratulations!

Jessica Fischer Soaring to New Heights

There is always that one person you come across in your life that you know is bound and destined for great things. Jessica Fischer is that person, and for her, the sky is the limit, literally. She has accomplished many things most people can only dream of. Most people have a few things to be proud of but Jessica has many. The United States Air Force Academy holds their students to the highest standards, and I am certain that Jessica will exceed their expectations. Her academic achievements include, but are not limited to, her 4.0+ GPA and honorable position of Co-Captain of the Liberty Academic Decathlon team. Jessica also belongs to the Math Honors Society and the Spanish Honors Society and is part of the California Scholarship Federation.

Jessica is a highly esteemed athlete and has been a member of the varsity track team since her freshman year, competing all four years in the Valley Championships. She has individually, and as a decisive part of relay team, broken school records enabling her to become a recruited athlete.

Community service is not a distant idea to Jessica. She has been a member, treasurer, representative, and captain of various clubs throughout high school. Key Club, Spanish Club, Interact Club, Link Crew, Ski Club and Math Club are only a few clubs she has assiduously participated in, many of them all four years of high school.

Excluding her high school career, Jessica has accomplished many other admirable things and has met many life-long goals. She started flying as a young and ambitious girl and conducted her first solo flight at only 16, something that is almost unheard of. Jessica then proceeded to receive her Private Pilot’s License as soon as she turned 17.

With all of her accomplishments it is understandable why Congressman Thomas bestowed upon Jessica a nomination to the United States Air Force Academy. Jessica has accepted her appointment and is heading to the academy one month after she graduates. Jessica is privileged to be going to the USAFA, and they will be lucky to have her.

This is my daughter, Kristina M. Nunez. She is graduating from Ridgeview High School this year on May 30, 2007.

She is the baby of five sisters and has really done an excellent job with finishing high school two and a half months early. She is a special daughter. She has really had a difficult time with school and other obstacles in her life.

With us moving, she had to enroll in independent study and has really had a boring senior year, losing almost all contact with her friends and all senior year events. But she has not complained once about it. She works full time and attended school with excellent grades. She did attend some senior proms and dances, but it was a little difficult being so excluded from all her friends for such a long time.

She’s a beautiful woman and a special daughter. We are blessed to have her in our lives because my pregnancy was a difficult one, with her being the fifth born. All were born within about five years, about a year apart.

Everyone who has had the pleasure to know Kristina is blessed because she is a beautiful, giving girl and we are all so very proud of her. I don’t think sometimes we tell her that enough. It’s not easy being the baby of five older sisters. At times I think she feels alone and picked on. But her sisters are always looking out for. Of course, not as much as Mom.

She’s my precious "baby" and I know soon she will grow up and move out and make some special man very happy. But for now she’s working on preparing for graduation and her future. So for all who see this picture, just know how lucky you all are to have met Kristina. She is a spectacular woman.

Joseph Gregory Marcus will be graduating from Liberty High School on May 31st. In attendance will be his parents David and Marissa Marcus, along with his three younger brothers, Sam, Mike and Aaron.

Joseph participated in basketball, choir and French all four years at Liberty. His time in these three areas were very important to him and brought great joy to his life. Joseph played two years of football, began taking AP classes in 10th grade and helped teach religious school for two years. He is a member of the French Honors' Society, Math Honors' Society, and CSF. Joseph sang the National Anthem at one of his home basketball games this year.

Joseph will be attending one of the top public engineering schools in the country at UC Santa Barbara as an engineering major.

We are all very proud of Joseph for his hard work and good choices he made all four years at Liberty. We look forward to the same effort at Santa Barbara. Joseph, your family loves you so much and will always support you.
