We are proud of you Kiana

Throughout her four years at South High School, Kiana Camile McClanahan participated in numerous activities in school as well as in the community. She was a four-year member of South High Color Guard. She also participated in tennis, softball and track.

Kiana was the Junior Class Vice President and the Senior Class President of the Associated Student Body. Kiana received the honor of being inducted into the National Honor Society, was on Honor Roll for four years and maintained a 3.8 GPA.

Her biography is published in the “Who’s Who Among American High School Scholars.” Kiana received the Spirit Award for Color Guard, was crowned Princess at the winter formal and was Homecoming Queen.

Kiana is a member of Black Student Union, Registered Nurse Explorer Program, National Youth Leadership of Medicine, Kern County Student Leadership, California Scholastic Foundation, Christian Club, and “We the People.” She has done volunteer work with Sequoia Middle School, Jamison Center, and Linda Larma Dance Academy.

Kiana is a member of Cain Memorial AME Church. Her favorite scripture is, “With God, All Things Are Possible.”

Kiana, with your special talents and unique gifts, you have the ability to make your dreams come true. Head out for new adventures, don’t be afraid to reach for the stars, because you deserve all the best that life has to offer. May you walk with pride today, with hope tomorrow and with faith always.

Kiana will graduate from South High School May 30, 2007. She was selected to participate in an Internship with Chevron for the summer of 2007. Kiana will continue her education at San Jose State University majoring in Micro-Biology.

She's a Rebel

Mandy Morley truly exemplifies the Rebel spirit. From the minute she became a Rebel, she has been a committed, focused, hard-working student. Not only does she strive to do well academically, holding a GPA of 3.7 or higher every semester, but has been a three-sport scholar athlete as well as active in many campus clubs, holding officer positions in many of those. She is definitely a leader on the South High campus. This year, she is ASB President, Criminal Justice Academy President, President of the Interact Club and Treasurer of the Alpine Club. She also serves on the School Site Council and is a member of both the California Scholarship Foundation and National Honor Society. What is impressive about Mandy is that she not only is active on the South High campus, but in the community as well. She has been a member of the Sheriff’s Explorer Post, planted trees, participated in Adoption Day sponsored by the Department of Human Services and, most notably, was a member of the Jim Burke Ford Dream Builders Team. Mandy also works part-time at a local Taco Bell.

Mandy’s hard work and dedication has not gone unnoticed. Earlier this year, she was the recipient of the Optimist Club Glendon Rogers Outstanding Student Award and served as the Mayor of Bakersfield for a day. This summer, she participated in the Youth Citizenship Seminar held at Pepperdine University. On April 23, 2007, she received her most prestigious recognition thus far. She was the recipient of a Bank of America Plaque of Achievement Award. This is awarded to students who have outstanding records of performance in a general study area and who are actively involved in school and community activities and have some type of work experience. More than 3,200 students win in these categories each year. However, out of these 3,200 honorees, only 320 are selected to compete in ten regional competitions on the basis of how successfully they balance their academic work with their extra-curricular activities. Mandy was one of those selected to compete in the applied arts category. It is important to note South High has not had a participant in this event for over ten years. Congratulations!

Mandy has been accepted to Chapman University as a Liberal Arts major.
