CCAPW Announces 2008 Scholarships

“Long Standing Tradition of Honoring Promising Scholars Continues”

For more than 25 years, the Central California Asian Pacific Women’s (CCAPW) group has given scholarships to promising young Asian women. This year, eight exemplary women from the community will be honored including two Kern County residents.

Mai Der Vang, President of CCAPW, said, “I am proud to be part of an organization that has had a significant impact on Asian and Pacific Islander women and girls. I know that our scholarship program has benefited individual recipients, her family, and the entire community.”

The 2008 CCAPW Scholarship recipients are:

Mae Takahashi Scholarship, $1,000

- Kelly Marie MASUDA, Atwater HS, Merced County, Japanese, studying Physical Therapy at CSU Fresno

CCAPW General Scholarships, $850 each

-Lee XIONG, Duncan Polytechnic HS, Fresno County, Hmong, Undecided major at CSU Fresno

-Pa THOR, Golden Valley HS, Merced County, Hmong, studying Political Science at UC Merced

-Fatema S. DOSSAJEE, Ridgeview HS, Kern County, Southeast Asian, studying Pre-Pharmacy at UC San Diego

-Kao Houa VANG, Edison HS, Fresno County, Hmong, studying Micro Biology/Pre-Med at UC Berkeley

-Amy A. PATEL, Los Banos HS, Merced County, Asian Indian, studying Pre-Med at UCLA

-Emma Kaiulani AH SING, Desert HS, Kern County, Hawaiian Chinese, studying Art Education/History at Whittier College

-Tena DORN, Duncan Polytechnic HS, Fresno County, Cambodian, studying Business/Engineering at CSU Fresno

Recipients will be honored at a luncheon on Saturday, July 26. The guest speaker will be Giang T. Nguyen, R.N., M.S.N.,Director, Fresno County Department of Behavioral Health Administration and CCAPW scholarship recipient in 1983. Lunch tickets are $20 per person. One of the great joys of parenting is staying up late with your child. Sewing up that costume she just has to have for school tomorrow. Helping with another algebra lesson. Or watching a scary movie together. Tonight it's a little different. She is off to her senior prom. She looked beautiful. And I'm sure she'll have a great time. But it's still tough to let go.

Eighteen years ago, God answered our prayers and our little "miracle baby" was born. She grew up running and kicking, laughing and dancing, jumping and reaching. Some-time honor student, part-time angel, full-time goofball, Lauren has been a constant source of amazement to her mother and me. She could talk her mom into rebounding while she worked on her jumpshot. She could con me into a game of Candyland (and beat me every time). But time flies.

Laurent grew up tall and strong with her older brothers Larry, Eric and Joe to lead the way. She started as a Bobcat, then a Bulldog, then a Warrior. Now she takes that first giant step toward adulthood. She'll be attending Cal State Bakersfield and playing volleyball for the Runners. If you see her on the court or meet her on the campus, get to know her and get to know a young woman who is sweet, kind, bright and beautiful. We did, and we love her more than she'll ever know.

Drummer Boy Graduates High School

Jay-R Gallegos is a 17-year-old senior from Delano High School, Delano, CA. He is going to graduate on Friday, June 1, 2007.

He is the youngest of three siblings and the last to graduate high school. Just like his sister and brother, he plans to pursue a career in nursing. He plans to attend Bakersfield College.

Jay-R is a great role model and leader. As a mentor to his peers he is very friendly and well liked.

Jay-R is part of his High School band where he plays percussion. He often travels out of town with his school band for competition with other schools. He has been in the drum line for 4 years. During his senior year he was the drum line leader.

Jay-R has been an altar boy at Our Lady of Guadalupe in Delano for seven years. He is currently head altar boy where he teaches other altar boys the church routines.

During Jay-R’s spare time he enjoys playing video games (Halo 2 and Dance Dance Revolution), hanging out with friends, and of course playing more drums.

He is soft-spoken but really cool once you get to know him and he has a good sense of humor.
