Fatherhood takes effort and is an endless, worthwhile and significant role that may often appear unappreciated. Yet, day in and day out our foster and adoptive dads care and provide for their children to ensure a better life for them. Although paternity plays no role in the relationship, these fathers take on the responsibility courageously, recognizing that every child deserves a loving family and a place to call home.

One dad in particular who has gone above and beyond the “fatherhood call of duty,” is Tim Popplewell. Tim has been a dad with Aspiranet for the past 10 years and has worked with over 9 children. Through their roles as foster parents, Tim and his wife Julie have helped 2 youth emancipate from the foster care system, and have become legal guardians to 4 of their children in their home.

According to Tim Popplewell, his motivation to continue on this worthwhile journey is simple: “These kids are family, and it’s not that tough to become attached and keep going when you think of them that way.” As in any home, there are definitely challenges. However, Mr. Popplewell believes the rewards of being a foster dad are well worth any challenge that comes their way. In fact, he states the most rewarding part of parenting children is “when they identify you as dad, and they respond to you as a dad, and want to be part of the family.”

Fatherhood is defined by Tim Popplewell as, “raising kids to be successful and decent human beings, and when they leave this house, they are able to stand on their own two feet.” With that in mind, he continues on his journey as a dad, boldly taking on each challenge and making the difference in each of their lives.

Tim Popplewell is Raising Hope and Empowering Community.

Fathers Day gift ideas for the sports fan

It seems that every year it gets harder to find that special something for dad. With Fathers Day right around the corner it will be time to start buying that one-of-a-kind gift to make his Fathers day special. If you are like me, you sometimes just cannot figure out what to buy dad. The idea of one more boring tie, cheesy aftershave or loud sweater is just too much to bear.

Being a sports fan and father myself, I thought I might suggest a few gift ideas if your dad is a sports enthusiast. There are many sports-related gift ideas that he is sure to enjoy. To help you out, here are some ideas:

One great Fathers Day gift idea is to give dad tickets to a sporting event. Each summer Bakersfield is home to professional baseball with the Bakersfield Blaze, a Class-A affiliate of the Texas Rangers; and the Bakersfield Brigade, a member of pro soccer's Premiere Developmental League. You can either purchase tickets for these events online, at the individual team websites or at the venue box offices. The price range is $10-$20 for a pair of tickets. Either way, every sports fan enjoys going to a live sporting event to cheer on their favorite hometown team.

What sports fan doesn’t like to eat and watch sports? So how about a gift certificate to their favorite local sports bar or sports themed restaurant? Places like Tailgater’s, Kosmos, or Woody’s will let your sports fan enjoy both good food and a good game or event. It is almost like going to a live sporting event, except without having to deal with the hot summer weather or parking conditions. Every sports fan will enjoy this Fathers Day gift. The price range varies depending on your appetite.

So you are looking for the unique gift for your outdoor sports fan. How about an all-day rock climbing class with Sierra South Mountain Sports in Kernville, it’s sure to get them into the action. Prices start at around $120 and up, and include all the necessary gear.

Dad’s afraid of heights? No problem, you could get him a half-day jam or a sunset mountain bike cruise with Mountain River Adventures in Kernville. Prices start at around $50, and include the bicycle rental. Pitch in for mom too. What better gift for dad than taking in a breathtaking sunset over the Kern River Valley with the love of his life.

Is dad a hockey fan? Skating or hockey lessons at Bakersfield Ice Sports Center are sure to get him into the action. Prices start at around $135 and up, and include skate rental and hockey gear.

So dear ole dad is a racin’ fan. A gift certificate to Superkart Racing in Bakersfield could be your winner. The price ranges from $9 for an introductory session to $60 for a Grand Prix race.

An additional Fathers Day gift idea is to give your sports fan some apparel for their favorite team. Whether you give them a Condors team jersey, Blaze Baseball hat, BC T-shirt, or CSUB sweatshirt, they are sure to love anything with the logo of their favorite Bakersfield team on it. If you are not sure what apparel they would like, you can always get them a bobble-head, stadium seat or team blanket. Either way, dad will be happy with these Fathers Day gift ideas. These items can be purchased online from the team websites or at local campus stores and stadium shops. Prices can range from $20-$150.

If you have a golfer to buy for on Fathers Day, there are many great gift ideas to choose from. At Pro Shop Golf you can buy them balls, tees, a golf towel, or perhaps that new custom putter or sand wedge that they have been talking about from Golfcraft Custom Clubs. You can also get them a gift certificate to their favorite driving range, so they can log some extra practice hours. Or, you can even buy them a gift certificate for a round of golf at their favorite golf course. The price range is $50-$500, and there are many options when it comes to gifts for Bakersfield golfers.

Finally, if you are like many others feeling the pinch of the nations tough economic times, don’t miss out on still getting dad something great for Fathers Day. Retro Active Sports in Bakersfield has a good assortment of gently used sports gear for dad, including golf clubs, tennis racquets, and exercise equipment. The price ranges vary but are easy on the wallet.

Hopefully, these ideas will make it a little easier when it comes time to buying that Fathers Day gift for your sports fan.

Happy Fathers Day

My dad is amazing. he is always there for me. He may not be my real dad, just my stepdad, but I consider him as my dad. He is always there for me through everything, like when I scraped a knee, or learned to ride a bike with no training wheels. He taught me. Even the big events in life, like surgery and graduation, he was there. Any time something bad happens, he is there. He is the best dad in the whole world. I love you Dad. Love always, your daughter Jade Whitbey.

Dear Daddy, My love is unconditional, you knew it from the start. If know how much you love me, I can feel it from your heart. Even if I’m grumpy and I cry all day, you’re always there to soothe me in every little way. In your eyes I can see just how proud you are of me. If I stumble, if I fall, I know you’ll see me through it all. When I grow up and become a man, I only hope I can be half the dad that you were to me, your “little man.” If I could talk, I would say to you, “Happy Father’s Day, Dad. I Love You.”

My father, God rest his soul, would be 98 years old if he were alive today. Considering his short-lived life, 61 years, and all the many things he did in that life, I’m not sure the world could have taken another 30 years of my dad, Lloyd A. “Robbie Robinson.” One of the strangest and most fun things I remember my dad doing was during World War II. We lived in the Bay Area and he had three jobs. One as a bus driver for the Key System bus line, he also was a Coast Guard Reservist, and he worked in the Richmond ship yards.

One night about midnight, after a swing shift at the ship yards, he came home, told my mom to wake my brother and I. Jim was about 10, which would have made me about 4 at the time. He then proceeded to go all over the neighborhood, waking up all the neighborhood families with or without kids. They all came back to our home in their sleeping clothes (strange as that may seem) to watch a real life magician. My dad had somehow talked a magician into entertaining the neighborhood and midnight was the only time he had free.

The kids were over the moon and thought that was the greatest and the adults were thrilled also. I guess during the war you took your fun and entertainment any way you could get it.

All this to say my dad was spontaneous, fun, bigger than life and real. I miss him and think about him most every day and more so now that I am a mom, grandmother and great grandmother. The war years were a strange and hard time to grow up but my dad somehow made them a lot easier for us all.

Daddy (John Kreman),

We thank God every day for you and mommy finding each other because if it wasn’t for you, we wouldn’t know what a daddy is. You work hard every day to give us what we need and much more. You teach us wrong from right so when we become men we won’t go in the wrong direction.

Summer vacations are the best because I love when we go camping, shooting and to the drag races. It’s a lot of fun. Even though Jakie doesn’t speak because of his autism, if given the chance he’d thank you for all your patience, love and caring. When Lil’ Brother Jake gets sad, you are always good at figuring out what is bothering him at the moment. You give him lots of hugs and kisses to comfort him. Someday when we step into your footsteps, I pray my children will look up to us llike we do you because you’re our “Hero.”

Happy Father’s Day.
Love, your Kreman boys, John and Jacob

As an only child, I received lots of attention from my older parents. My dad would allow me to do things and experience situations (sometimes without my mother’s approval) that were unusual. We had a huge sycamore tree that Dad had big boulders positioned under so the boys across the street and I could climb up and climb we did! He even climbed up and hid my Easter basket in it one year! One morning, I wanted to know what he did while looking in the mirror each day and what it felt like to scrape your face with a razor — so he lathered me up and I got to SHAVE!! Even today, I love new experiences as an environmental biologist — all thanks to my loving dad!! Happy Dad’s Day.

My memory of my father was when I was about 5 years old. It was Father’s Day and I had made him a card in school. It was a card with a tie on the outside and inside was a picture of my father, myself, my dog and my father’s car. I woke up on the morning of Father’s Day and gave him his gift. He was very happy with his card and picture. He even gave me the cookie to eat.

Last year, my father passed away after a battle with cancer. After eight months, I have just started going through his tools in the garage. While going through stacks of paper and pictures from his office, I ran across this card that I had given him 32 years earlier. I guess it did mean a lot to him. This is my first Father’s Day without my father and I really miss him a lot. I would like to wish my father Max Sampayan a happy Father’s Day.

Love, your son, Max.

We have always been close, and have shared a special father-daughter bond that many have envied. Dad never waivered his love for me, even when as a teenager I was not the best of kids, and to this day, at age 51, he loves me just as he always has.

Last year was extremely emotional for Dad. My mom died on Mother’s Day, Dad had to move to an assisted living facility, his house was vandalized and just two weeks ago, his beloved dog had to be put to sleep. Throughout all this trauma, I stood by my dad just as he has done for me all my life.

I truly love this man. He is the best dad any daughter could possibly hope for, and a great role model for all.

This is my family in the mid ‘40s on a Saturday shopping trip to Bakersfield. It’s one of my fondest memories because we lived near Lamont and Dad was a foreman on a ranch (Di Giorgio) and he worked seven days a week many times.

Our trip included eating at the Rice Bowl, buying candy at Kress (we were just leaving Kress in the picture) and going to the South Chester Drive-In Theater. My dad always wanted the best for his family. He was strict but loving and generous.

My dad is now 94. I’m 70 and his caretaker. I’m still his little girl and I love his wisdom.

My daddy Ismael Barron is the best daddy ever. He paid a lot of money so I could be born on February 16, 2007.

Since the beginning my daddy has been there by my side, to cut the umbilical cord and later take me for my first hair cut.

My daddy held my hand as I was learning how to walk and would pick me up when I would fall. When I was ill my daddy took time off from work to take me to the Urgent Care.
When my daddy is working out of town he never forgets to call me and say “I love you, goodnight.” On weekends my daddy showers me with love and attention.

I would like to send my daddy a KISS and thank him for everything he does for me. Happy Father’s Day daddy and many more years to come.

Let’s ask the question, “What does it take to be a good father?”

You taught us, you loved your wife and children, and grandchildren, didn’t expect perfect children (all the time), prayed for us, and were a positive role model. What else could we ask? It was not easy being a good parent, it took hard work, and praying and making hard decisions. You couldn’t do it alone, but with the help of your heavenly Father.

I was blessed to be married to you. You showed your love every single day, through the little things you did, the sacrifices you made, and the loving care you gave to your family. We really appreciate all you did and all you were, and we love you more than you ever knew. Love is, above all, the gift of oneself, and that was you.

My father Richard “Blindman” Barron is in heaven. This picture was taken one month before he passed away, at the old Hush Puppy where he loved mai tais and chicken wings. Ironically that is where he spent his last night on this earth. When he started his business, “See: The Blindman” 26 years ago, I would have never thought that I would continue in his footsteps. My dad taught me everything I know in business and in life. He guides me through the tough times and gives me strength when I need it most. I look back and I am so thankful I listened to most all of his advice. I want to thank all of his friends, clients and partners for being a part of his incredible life and especially my dad for allowing me to be who I am today.

Sincerely,
The Blindman’s daughter, Robin Barron-Eisen

My dad has always been by my side. He helps me to school on time. He keeps my clothes clean and ready to use.

He thinks of doing exercise every day. When we are on long driving trips, he stops part way to play catch with a ball and glove. We have climbed mountains and gone down the Grand Canyon.

All my life my dad stands by my side in sports, school activities and especially in the Boy Scouts.

He is a life Scout while living in Bakersfield and recently arranged a party for me after earning the Eagle Scout badge. This picture shows both of us in Scouts just before I received my blue kerchief and pin for the eagle badge.

I am 14 years old and soon to have my dad help me think about getting my driver’s license. I am glad I can grow up so close to Dad.

One of my special memories of my dad is waking up on Saturday mornings with him and my sister and all of us watching the Little Rascals together. Pete the dog was my dad’s favorite. I wanted to say thank you for always working so hard to make sure we never went without. As I’ve gotten older and have a family of my own, I realize all the sacrifices you made for Wendy and I. You are the only one, no matter how upset I am, who can always find a way to make me laugh. I’m grateful how you give all your time and patience to coaching my son’s baseball team this year, with nothing in return. You made each boy on that team feel important no matter how good they were. There was a particular boy that was having a hard time hitting the ball. My dad never gave up on him and did everything he could to help him achieve that goal. I love you, Dad. You’re one in a million.

Clarence Hosey was my dad, and he was the greatest father in the whole world. I remember as a kid getting into arguments with other kids about how tough our dads were. I would tell them my dad was Superman!! One of my fondest memories is watching college football with my dad. Together we watched the “Big Game” between Cal and Stanford when Cal pulled out the win on the last play blasting through the Stanford band who had already assembled on the field. Little did either of us know at the time that my own son would one day play on the Cal football team. Though my father is no longer here, I always felt his presence at my son’s games, especially when that memorable “Big Game” play was shown on the big screen at Memorial Stadium. Happy Father’s Day.

He was the first man I ever loved.

He taught me valuable lessons, like dancing to his favorite music, me standing on his feet, as we glided across the room. He taught me about butterfly kisses and bear hugs. He always remembered birthdays and anniversaries.

We didn’t always get along. For years, I thought he couldn’t possibly know what he was talking about. But, one day, I realized I was echoing him. I can’t say how many times I have repeated his rules or advice to my children and grandchildren.

In his last days, he talked a lot about happy times with family. This was what was important to him. He wanted us to know that he treasured us.

Not a day goes by that I don’t think of him and as long as I still have my memories, he’s not so far away.

That’s my old man, Roger Davis, with his hand on the hood of his ‘50 Chevy. He and his cronies were on the way to the drags when they lost a fan belt. My grandmother could tell stories (cautionary tales) about him for hours. Someday these four young men would all be fathers of character. But at this time they were just characters — who caused their fathers to smile (furtively) and frown when a stern admonishment was needed.

Our fathers teach us things about sports, cars, tools, guns, fishing and the like. They give us our first sip of beer and look stunned at our first use of profanity. Their examples give us the fundamentals for living a meaningful life — fundamentals like: responsibility, honesty, hard work, to think and reason, win humbly, lose graciously and, above all, laugh.

Three of the men in the photo are gone; one of them is my father. I miss him dearly. Go see your dad this Father’s Day. He’s responsible for at least half of who and what you are.

Just because I'm married to him, it doesn't mean I naturally default in my opinion that he is the greatest father. No, each father, like each mother, needs to earn that title. My husband has. My children have a great father.

One of the reasons I knew I wanted to marry him was how he interacted with children. The first time he met my family, a Thanksgiving dinner many moons ago, not ten minutes had passed before I found him wrestling with my young nephews on the living room floor. Through all the hooting and hollering, the choke holds, the tiny fingers clawing the carpet to get free from the big brute, I knew that was the man I wanted to be the father of my children.

Two sons later, I feel no different. And though I wanted daughters, Charles' wrestling moves make me realize why he needed sons. I can't think of a happier boy in the world than the sons of Charles Ijames.

A daddy who comes straight home each night and attends to his business in the same order since our first child was born. Namely, giving mommy a kiss, puting down what's in his hands, and immediately engaging in play with the boys and the dogs.

It's no wonder that the ten to twenty minutes after the end of his workday, even the dogs know that when the phone rings, it means daddy is pulling into the driveway. No one bothers to answer the phone. Those interested in roughhousing run to the door and anxiously await the tiny, tiny, click of daddy's car being put into park; the moment when they can open the door and run into the garage.

My only involvement with any creature, either two or four legged, from that point on is saying any one of my token exclamations such as: Keep it down!; Please, my ears!; and No, not on the wood floors!

But, they're having fun. The paint chipping on the walls, the tears in the furniture, the broken wall sculpture in the hall that no one will fess up to, and my precious, precious wood floors with all its divots and scratches can testify to such. I can't help but think it's worth it. Not all the time, mind you, because I do appreciate a fine looking house. But, in the grander scheme of things, yes, it's worth it.

For, one day, when my boys are grown and their father needs a cane to get out of his recliner, (on account of the weak knees, you see, from the natural course of twenty plus years of doing nothing in moderation with his sons), I will take comfort when my grandchildren are wrecking their mother's house playing with their fathers, my sons. It will mean my boys love their children as much as their daddy loved them.

Oh, I nearly forgot. How silly of me to leave this to the end. It is, by far, the most important thing that makes my husband the best father. He loves me. He loves me unconditionally. He thinks its cute when I snore, that I look beautiful without make-up, and am a great mother even when I hide in my room during a temper tantrum. He says these things to me in front of my sons. He treats me like a lady, admires me for being a woman, and loves me as his wife. All in front of his children. There is no greater gift for a father to give to his children, is there? Happy Father's Day, Dear, you've earned it.

RAJA SANDHU

Fathers almost always come after the mothers (Mom and Dad), or they just get stuck changing the diapers. But nonetheless, they’re just as important and valued.

Daddy, you’re the strongest person we know, physically and emotionally. You work hard day and night for our benefit. We love you for everything you do. This time of our lives is hardest on you and we know Mom mean the world to you, and everything will be way better soon. Your lectures may be boring now, but we know they have great meaning. Someday we’ll realize what you meant and you’ll be right there helping us through. You mean the world to us and we hope you know it. You’re more of a friend than a parent and we greatly appreciate the bond we have with you. We’re probably the luckiest kids in the world to have such a caring and affectionate dad who not only scolds us but also wrestles with us and braids our hair. Thank you for everything you’ve done and will do. Thank you for being proud of us for everything we’ve ever done. Someday, we’ll make you so proud, you’ll jump up in joy! We love you Daddy!

                                               Love,

I have loved my husband, Gary Willman, since I was a little girl (or so it seems)...he has been my life long friend! To think of loving him any more sounded impossible to me, he already held my whole heart- I love every single thing about this man. And then I saw him hold our baby girl, Taylor Grayce, for the very first time! And I watched as he cared for her from her very first days, everything from feeding her to reading to her, staying up on those sleepless nights, playing music/playing games, teaching her to walk and talk, showing her the world and encouraging her to be the brightest, smartest, funniest, polite and most amazing baby girl on the whole planet!!! The look in his eyes when he holds her, thinks of her, talks to and about her is the most genuine, pure love in the world. And in his daughter's eyes he can do no wrong, he is her hero! She simply adores her Daddy....it has come full circle- my little girl loves the same man I loved when I was a little girl. And now this world makes a little more sense!!!

Gary Dean, today and everyday, please always carry with you the love of your girls- we honor you and we cherish you. Thank you for making every moment as a family the best feeling in the world....Love always, Your Wifey and Your LadyBuggy "2008"

My father is an ecclesiastical leader in our church. He was always the last to leave after meetings, and I would often stay behind to help.

One particular Sunday when I was only 7-years-old I was eager to help turn out all the lights. I noticed that down the hall one had been left on. I quickly ran down and turned out the light only to find myself in complete darkness.

In fear, I called out to my father. He assured me I'd be alright and told me to follow the sound of his voice. I was hesitant, but trusted my dad so I began the walk down the long hall. He continued to talk to me, calm and reassuring. Before I knew it, I turned the corner and could see the light as my father stood at the door with his arms wide open to me.

My father continues to be the light I can look to, the voice I can always follow with complete confidence.

I love you, Dad.

The memories of my father, Randy Fendrick, reverberate with the golden mellow tones of the trombone. It is a snapshot album of memories filled with the melodies of his love for the grand art of making music. I remember the morning light, slanting through our den shutters, alighting off the brass as he slides up and down the scales. I remember cool fall afternoons, flying down the street on my bike, leaves scuttling behind me, the clarion call of low brass long-tones ringing through the open windows. I remember him on the phone encouraging, rallying and reminding others; let's get together, practice, perform, use these gifts, work through the difficulties, make the sacrifices, invest in our community and each other.

I remember the evenings, Dad in dress black or a tux for Symphony and his excitement to play. I remember Sunday nights at Beale Park with the Summer Band. Colonel Moore directing John Philip Sousa marches, my dad always on the far right. The heat would be radiating out of the amphitheater but the grass was cool as we stood for the Star Spangled Banner or I rolled down the hills getting all summer itchy. The best part of the evening was to get a snow cone and go behind the stage, pretending I was up there playing, the sound filling me up from the inside out. I remember Christmas carols all jazzed up with a brass quartet and most recently with his grandsons.

I thank my father for pursuing his love, for sharing that with his family and encouraging others to find the music within themselves and share it out with others. His life proves that a life spent living out a dream is a life richly spent.

A father of seven, a grandfather of six, five still at home, four adopted, three schools taught at, two in Bakersfield, and one hard-core Dodger Fan. All of this wrapped up into the most fun loving father we kids could ever ask for. Getting all of us together is hard, but when you throw in baseball, and Dodger baseball at that, everything just seems to walk into place. One memory we hold dear to our hearts was actually very recent. Our youngest brother had is 2nd birthday and it just happened that we all decided to wear our Dodger gear. It was a defiant photo opp! Packing all of us on the park bench took some time, but when we finally got situated it was perfect. When we looked at our dad with his children and all decorated in his favorite baseball team around him a smile of complete content spread across his face. A beautiful sight indeed! We love you Dad! And we always will!

I can honestly say that we have the most amazing father. He really has been there for myself and my 2 brothers through everything.. and I mean everything! Whether he liked the situation or not he is always there when we need him... maybe not always smiling, but definitely there in a heartbeat ;). He's proved to us over and over his infamous saying.."family will always be there before anyone". As much as we hate to admit it and as much as he loves to hear it..."he's right". He plans ahead and saves for our futures when he doesnt even have to, he helps us work through our mistakes when he can easily give up, he fills up our cars with gas when the prices are almost $5 a gallon, and he's mentored us into becoming mature young adults. Where we are at now we could not have done it without his help... For all the advice, scoldings, guidance and love you have shown us.. you really are appreciated and we are beyond blessed to have a father like you. I love you, Dad. Happy Father's Day. ~Jen

My dad is the best dad I could have ever wished for. He has helped me through everything and strongly believes and supports everything we do. He is very funny and makes us laugh uncontrollably. He gets along with everyone he meets and like to help out people in their time of need. My dad has always been there for me and I thank him for everything he has done, I will miss you so much when I leave to UCSB this fall dad. Thanks for everything and for pushing me as far as to realize my dream of attending my dream college! Thanks for putting up with me all of these crazy years and for teaching me all those good values that I will never forget. I Love you Dad and Happy Father's Day.
