Art Night

Art night is for the curious individual with the desire to create. Whether you haven't used a paintbrush in years or were always afraid to try oil pastels, this could be the creative outlet for you. Art night is time to escape and take a journey to explore different mediums and variety of ways of creating art. Learn to create your own meditation tools by simply enjoying the process of creation. Simple exercises will be introduced week to encourage personal growth and understanding of ones self. Each week we will concentrate on personal work as well as a group project. Time is set aside each week for personal reflection and sharing. Each class is ended with a challenge to continue to encourage the newly awakened artist within you. I hope to create a positive and supportive atmosphere where you may feel relaxed and comfortable to allow yourself to let go and create. I invite you to come join and share the adventures to the journey within.
Class 1 November 10th- "Introduction to art materials and different mediums."
Learn the art of letting go and clearing the chatter of the mind to go on a journey within and create from the soul. You will be using materials such as pencils, pen/ marker, oil pastels, chalk pastels and watercolor to create your own tools for meditation. There will be a time for reflection and sharing. We will be creating a group project that focus on combining energies to manifest intent. Each week is ended with a challenge to encourage your new path in creation. I invite you to take the time to come explore what your artwork says to you.
Class 2 November 24th- "Learning to read your lines and the meaning of your colors"
This week we will be creating our own "Line Libraries". Learn to understand your thoughts and emotions by the lines from your personal library. Learn the meaning of colors and learn to interpret what they mean in your artwork to you. There will be a time for reflection and sharing. We will be creating a group project that focus on combining energies to manifest intent. Each week is ended with a challenge to encourage your new path in creation. I invite you to come and learn what your artwork has to say to you.

Walter Lee Younger

- Walter is a dreamer. He wants to be rich and devises plans to acquire wealth with his friends, particularly Willy Harris. He wants to invest his fatherʼs insurance money in a new liquor store venture.

Beneatha Younger (“Bennie”)

- Mamaʼs daughter and Walterʼs sister. Beneatha is an intellectual. Twenty years old, she attends college and is better educated than the rest of the Younger family. Some of her personal beliefs and views have distanced her from conservative Mama. She dreams of being a doctor and struggles to determine her identity as a well-educated black woman.
Lena Younger (“Mama”)
- Walter and Beneathaʼs mother. The matriarch of the family, Mama is religious, moral, and maternal. She wants to use her husbandʼs insurance money as a down payment on a house with a backyard to fulfill her dream for her family to move up in the world.
Ruth Younger
- Walterʼs wife and Travisʼs mother. Her marriage to Walter has problems, but she hopes to rekindle their love. She is about thirty, but her weariness makes her seem older. Her almost pessimistic pragmatism helps her to survive.
Travis Younger
- Walter and Ruthʼs sheltered 10 year old son. He has no bedroom and sleeps on the living-room sofa.
Joseph Asagai
- A Nigerian student in love with Beneatha. Asagai, as he is often called, is very proud of his African heritage, and Beneatha hopes to learn about her African heritage from him.
George Murchison
- A wealthy, African-American man who courts Beneatha, who dislikes his willingness to submit to white culture and forget his African heritage. He challenges the thoughts and feelings of other black people through his arrogance and flair for intellectual competition.
Mr. Karl Lindner
- The only white character in the play. Mr. Lindner arrives at the Youngersʼ apartment from the Clybourne Park Improvement Association. He offers the Youngers a deal to reconsider moving into his (all-white) neighborhood.
Bobo
- One of Walterʼs partners in the liquor store plan. Bobo appears to be as mentally slow as his name indicates.
Mrs. Johnson
- The Youngersʼ neighbor. Mrs. Johnson takes advantage of the Youngersʼ hospitality and warns them about moving into a predominately white neighborhood.

KWANZAA: A CULTURAL AFFIRMATION

Kwanzaa is a designated time of year when African American families and communities all across the USA collectively gather to reinforce a commitment to maintain and celebrate their African heritage and culture. We come together to commemorate and honor our Ancestors, who through their love, labor, and struggle, laid the foundation for us and pushed our lives and history forward. Kwanzaa challenges us to stay focused, busy, and productive in strengthening our families and communities, so that together we may flourish and benefit. We celebrate the absolute need to strive to maintain dignity-affirming families, of indulging in, and sharing with each other the beauty and richness of culture, its values, insights, and instructive practices that inform, enrich, and expand our lives.

The cultural holiday is traditionally celebrated from December 26 – January 1. Kwanzaa was created in 1966 in Los Angeles, California, in the midst of the African American Freedom Movement. Dr. Maulana Karenga created Kwanzaa as an avenue for African Americans to collectively express their ethnicity as a people of African descent. The holiday celebrates family, community, and culture, and emphasizes that these three cherished values are indivisible.

Kwanzaa is non-heroic, is neither religious nor political, and is not a substitute for, or supplement to Christmas. Kwanzaa is totally unrelated to the Christmas holiday. The year-end observance of Kwanzaa occurs, because this cultural holiday is derived from the African continent’s traditional year-end agricultural harvest celebrations.

The name Kwanzaa comes from the Swahili phrase, matunda ya Kwanza, where matunda means “fruits”, and ya kwanza means “first”. Dr. Karenga added the extra “a” to the Swahili word kwanza, to distinguish the name of the holiday and convey a distinct African cultural identity. The language of Swahili was chosen for the name Kwanzaa and all of its accompanying phrases, because it is “non-tribal”, and is an official trade language used by multiple African countries. It is important to note that nowhere on the continent of Africa is there a holiday named Kwanzaa. Nor is there any indigenous holiday celebrated on the African continent with the same symbols, practices, or principles. Kwanzaa is a positive and uplifting African American created cultural expression, intended to address a widespread need to rescue, reconstruct, restore, and reinforce rootedness in African heritage and culture.

Kwanzaa brings the community together from all religious traditions, all classes, all ages, and all generations, to celebrate, build, and strengthen, our families, communities, and cultural bonds in a rich and meaningful way. The heart and soul of Kwanzaa revolves around Seven Principles. The Swahili term for the Seven Principles is the Nguzo Saba. There is one principle for each day of the cultural holiday observance. The principles in Swahili and English with a brief explanation are:

Umoja (Unity) – stresses that a profound sense of relatedness, togetherness and oneness in the small and larger circles of our lives be nurtured and maintained.
Kujichagulia (Self-Determination) – stresses that we define ourselves by embracing our history, heritage, and culture to develop common interests that are in the best interest of the family and community.
Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility) – stresses that we practice responsibility to and for each other, by being morally sensitive to the needs and aspirations of the family and community.
Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics) – stresses the obligation to pool resources, and share, for collective economic strength to meet common needs.
Nia (Purpose) – stresses introspect for setting personal goals that are beneficial to the family and to the community.
Kuumba (Creativity) – stresses persistent use of our creative energies to build and maintain a strong and vibrant family and community.
Imani (Faith) – stresses the obligation to honor the best of our traditions, to always strive for higher levels of achievement, to continuously affirm our dignity and self-worth, and to always maintain confidence in our unique ability to succeed and triumph, irrespective of surrounding adversity.

Kwanzaa is embraced because it establishes a cultural holiday for African American families and communities to circulate their African heritage in a multi-cultural world. Kwanzaa is observed in family centered activities and in community gatherings. On Saturday, December 26, 2009, there will be a FREE Citywide Kwanzaa Celebration for our community-at-large at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (MLK) Community Center's Gymnasium, located at 1000 S. Owens Street, from 1 pm until 4 pm. African attire is strongly emphasized to support the essence and ambiance of this cultural event.

In Week 5 of the Random Writers Workshop we will be discussing TIPS FOR GETTING PUBLISHED. This week's special guest is author/associate publisher Brenda Knight of Viva Editions and Cleis Press. Her advice for the class will be read by discussion leader Nick Belardes. Past discussions have covered narrative, how to start a novel, and dialogue and have included professional writers such as Greg Olear, Hazel Dixon-Cooper, Gina Frangello and Jonathan Evison.

Writers of Kern hosts "Mark Twain" impressionist, Mark Bagby!

Writers of Kern proudly announces its January speaker, Mark Bagby! Bagby beat more than 100 people in completing a previously unpublished essay by Mark Twain titled "Conversations with Satan." Sponsored by HarperStudio in conjunction with Borders Books, the contest (300 words, max) was called "I am the Next Mark Twain."

Mark Bagby, 52, has been interpreting Mark Twain since he was cast in the role of the great humorist and author in the Bakersfield Musical Theatre (community theatre) production of “Big River,” the musical adaptation of “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn,” in 1991. Since then, he has studied biographies, critical essays, and read nearly everything Twain has written. This has helped immensely and helped refine his performances.

Says Bagby: "I don’t know if I’m the next Mark Twain, as there will never be another. But I’m gratified to keep his work, life and words alive for audiences to enjoy, and I thank HarperStudio and Borders for helping to keep Mark Twain in the public consciousness, especially as we approach the centennial of his death. And I’m absolutely thrilled to have won….I’m trying to be humble, but I’ll let Mr. Twain have the final word: 'I have had many compliments, but they always embarass me. I always feel they have not said enough.'”

Bakersfield College Gallery Features High School Artists

The Wylie and May Louise Jones Gallery at Bakersfield College is debuting a new show which invites area high school artists to display at the northeast community college.

Panorama Invitational: An Exhibit of Exceptional Artwork by Kern County High School Seniors, features work by students at South High School, Garces High School, Golden Valley High School, Centennial High School, Bakersfield High School, Ridgeview High School, Foothill High School, Liberty High School, Stockdale High School and Highland High School.

“The importance of the exhibition is that it allows high school artists, sometimes for the first time, to see their work in a professional environment,” said Gallery director Margaret Nowling. “The work is viewed by a broader audience, including their peers, than would normally see the students’ art.”

According to their teachers, students find this exhibit experience invigorating and it can become the necessary push to help the students strive for achievement in future works. Artwork chosen for the show is picked by the high school art teachers working with senior students.

WEEK 11: We're going to talk about "Imagination."

Imagination is one of the key ingredients to writing. But it's also difficult to access sometimes. Do you know how to manage your thoughts and imagination? When should you turn it on? When should you turn it off? How can you best apply your imagination to your writing?

We'll be discussing the imagination process and will have special input from Bonnie Hearn Hill, whose books ARIES RISING and TAURUS EYES from the STAR CROSSED SERIES will soon be hitting bookstores. Ice Worlds at the Bakersfield College Planetarium

Bakersfield College’s William M. Thomas Planetarium, located in the College's Math and Science Building, has announced the show schedule for the Spring 2010 semester. Each one hour show will begin with a short tour of the evening sky using the planetarium's Goto Chronos star projector.

Ice Worlds is a 24-minute full dome show using the Planetarium’s Spitz SciDome to travel to the Arctic and Antarctic regions of our planet to examine the ecosystems that live and thrive there and see how their survival is connected with our own. Beyond Earth, we'll see how the existence of ice shapes the landscapes and the natural systems on other planets and moons in our solar system, including Mars, Titan, and Enceladus. Tickets are $6.50 for adults and $4.50 for students and seniors.

Cartooning Class at Russo's Books!

Local Cartoonist Ray Friesen is hosting his first of several Monthly Free Cartooning Classes! The february one has a wonky date, Feb 20th, but then after that, they are going to be the first February of every month!

Ray is well known in the bakersfield area, living in Tehachapi CA, just a hop and a skip away. Teaming with Russo's books to promote writing and drawing for kids during the weekend seemed like a very natural thing to do.

Ray has just celebrated signing a 3 book deal with publishing company Top Shelf, to write and draw a trilogy of Pirate Penguin vs Ninja Chicken novels. "We've allready got the plush toys, making was the obvious next move!"

Friesen is 22, and has done a handful of booksignings in bakersfield before, at the three big book stores, and is really looking forward to sharing his expertise with the kids of the city who come to Russos on the saturday's he'll be there.

IBEX: Search for the Edge of the Solar Systemis a 28-minute full dome show using the Planetarium’s Spitz SciDome to investigate the boundary between our Solar System and the rest of our galaxy. Designed for audiences with an appreciation for the challenges of space science and a desire to learn more about science research, IBEX: Search for the Edge of the Solar System follows the creation of NASA's Interstellar Boundary Explorer (IBEX). Audiences will get an in-depth look at the mission and how IBEX is collecting high-speed atoms to create a map of our Solar System's boundary.
