This amazing VBS is taking place at St. John's Lutheran Church, 4500 Buena Vista Road, for two identical sessions.

Choose either one of our sessions to attend. Session one starts July 14 and runs through July 19. Session two takes place July 21 through July 25.

VBS runs from 8:30 a.m. to noon and is free of charge.

Children age 4 (pre-K) through those entering the sixth grade are eligible to attend.

As an added bonus, children can download a free sing-along CD from our church website.

Renaissance Festival Returns To San Luis Obispo On July 19 & 20

San Luis Obispo's popular Central Coast Renaissance Festival makes its 24th annual appearance in El Chorro Regional Park on July 19 and 20, 2008. The public is invited to join the celebration. Costumes are not required.

Over 800 costumed participants will bring the colorful English village of Donneybrooke to life with shops and stages featuring continuous comedy, juggling, music and dance shows, as well as living history demonstrations throughout the village. A highlight is authentic, full-contact jousting by internationally recognized jousting professionals. Visitors will enjoy unique shopping and a bounty of delicious food and drink. There are games and events for all ages.

El Chorro Regional Park is located off Highway 1, across from Cuesta College, between San Luis Obispo and Morro Bay. Parking is at Cuesta College and is $1.00 per car, with a free shuttle bus to the festival entrance. Hours are 10 AM - 6 PM on Saturday, and 10 AM until 5 PM on Sunday. Adult tickets are $15. Twilight at CALM features free ice cream — July 26

What could be better than free admission to the zoo and complimentary ice cream? That’s exactly what is in store for children, ages 3-17, who visit Twilight at CALM (located between Lake Ming and Hart Park), July 26, from 5:30-8 p.m.

As a way of contributing to the community, La Rosa Fruit Bars & Ice Cream, Inc. will be giving away free ice cream to all the children who attend the California Living Museum that evening.

Visitors will also be treated to a wildlife presentation and a scavenger hunt for the kids. The Central California Children’s Railroad will be running with tickets priced at only $1 per person.

The Shenandoah Spy BOOK SIGNING

Francis Hamit will sign and speak about and possibly read from THE SHENANDOAH SPY, his exciting new novel about Confederate Army spy and scout Belle Boyd. Belle was a 17-year-old girl in Martinsburg, Virginia in July 1861 when she shot a Union Army soldier who invaded her home and assaulted her mother. She was aquitted on justifiable homicide. Her passionat advocacy for the South led her to become a Confederate Army nurse, courier, scout and spy. As a spy she worked mostly from her uncle's hotel in Front Royal which had been taken over by the Union Army as its headquarters. Her affair with a Union staff officer allowed her to discover Union Army plans to trap Stonewall Jackson's Army. She made a 15-mile ride in the dead of night to find and alert Colonel Turner Ashby of the 7th Virginia Cavalry to the plan. A few days later, at the Battle of Front Royal, she ran across the battlefield under fire to deliver further intelligence to Stonewall Jackson. For this and other deeds she became the first woman in American history to be formally commissioned an army officer. Although this narrative is presented as fiction, it is based upon real people and events and provides insights not just into the early Civil War, but also military intelligence operations and the way that guerrilla armies operate.

Mr. Hamit is a graduate of the Iowa Writers Workshop who once served in Military Intelligence. He lives in Kern County. The book is a trade paperback at $18.95 and is available at Russo's Books and other fine book stores.

Exciting changes at CALM

Weekends at the California Living Museum (CALM) just got more exciting. Wildlife presentations are now scheduled four times on Saturdays (including Twilight at CALM) and three times on Sundays. CALM Animal Keepers focus on mammals, birds of prey or reptiles during individual presentations, providing visitors with up close and personal experiences with the animals.

During Twilight at CALM on Saturdays, the Curator of Animals conducts a lively, hour-long show introducing visitors to a large variety of animals ranging from tarantulas to baby skunks. Presentations are entertaining, and everyone leaves a little more knowledgeable about the wildlife around them.

The Central California Children’s Railroad is on track for rides Saturdays 10 a.m.-2 p.m.; during Twilight at CALM, and Sundays 1-4 p.m. This is not a kiddie train ride — adults enjoy it as much as children. Tracks run east of the zoo and during the eight minute ride passengers get a great view of the Kern River with frequent glimpses of wildlife in their natural habitat. Train tickets are only $1.

Lipizzaner Stallions

2008 represents the 38th Anniversary season of The Lipizzaner Stallions. All new music, choreography and routines have been incorporated in this anniversary edition with a major emphasis on the historical background and foundation of the Lipizzaner breed, from its original breeding and use as a horse of war to a horse of nobility and aristocracy to a living form of equestrian art. The show emulates the Spanish Riding School of Vienna, Austria, in its presentation of Lipizzans, and maintains a traditional as well as entertaining performance similar in many ways to what you would see at the Spanish Riding School of Vienna.

Also included in the performance is a segment called the "Airs Above the Ground." These are the spectacular leaps and maneuvers, once used by riders in saddle to protect and defend themselves on the battlefield, which are now preserved as an equestrian work of art. When you see the Lipizzans perform, it is like stepping back four hundred years and viewing one of the greatest equine ballets in history.

The Lipizzan is a rare and unique breed; its history and culture is known worldwide. The Walt Disney movie The Miracle of the White Stallions, depicting General George S. Patton saving them at the end of World War II from certain extinction, created an even greater world-wide interest in the Lipizzaner breed. Had it not been for Patton, there would be no Lipizzans today.

Although the Lipizzans star in this presentation, the ancestral forefather of the Lipizzan, the Spanish Andalusian, is featured in a high school presentation with special wardrobe themed to traditional Spanish music.

Not only is the Andalusian shown in saddle, but also in a unique presentation where the rider performs all the maneuvers of the Grand Prix Olympic level dressage on the longline, while walking behind the horse and guiding him through his paces.

Russo's Books Breaking Dawn Midnight Release Party

Lopez House Historic Films Fund-raiser - Aug. 1

It will be Kern County on the big screen as “The House with Three Lives” and “Wild West Country: The Lure of Gold” premier for a one night only screening at the majestic Fox Theatre in Bakersfield beginning at 6:30 p.m. on Aug. 1. Proceeds from the $10 per person, non-profit, fund-raiser will be used for the ongoing preservation of the historic J.J. Lopez House at the Kern County Museum. Presented by the museum and Kern River Valley Historical Society, the event will even have a 19th Century feel outside with horses and “Wild West Country…” actors in period attire greeting visitors, along with members of the pioneer Lopez, Coppock, Hill, Rankin and Powers families.

“The House with Three Lives” is a 30 minute documentary detailing the history and preservation of the house built in downtown Bakersfield by Spanish immigrant and Tejon Ranch Manager J.J. Lopez in 1906. It became the home for Otis Coppock, who moved it to Rosedale Highway and Calloway Road in 1953, and later the Hill family that purchased it in the 1960s.

Inspired by the late Bob Powers’ books, “Wild West Country…” is a 90 minute docudrama about the county’s South Sierra region, featuring Joseph Walker’s discovery of the pass that bears his name in 1834 through the Kern River Gold Rush and the establishment of gold camp, Whiskey Flat — now known as Kernville.

The films were produced by veteran filmmaker Chuck Barbee, whose credits include work on the Peabody Award network series “Hot Dog” and Emmy Award winner “Night Court.”

Kern County Democrats First Wednesdays

The Kern County Democratic Party hosts a get-together the first Wednesday of each month at Dagny’s Coffee. This is no formal meeting or topic, just a chance for local Democrats and progressively-minded people to talk about the important issues of the day. Kern County Museum's Fun Day: Splish Splash Safari

Learn about water, play in water, slide through water, and generally celebrate this life sustaining fluid we often take for granted. Don't forget to wear your bathing suit! Castle & Cooke Teams with Lake Tulloch Lions Club to Present Vintage Car Show

(COPPEROPOLIS, Calif.) – Castle & Cooke -- purveyor of high-end resort, residential communities and commercial centers -- today announces Copperopolis Town Square will host Hot Copper Days, a vintage car show sponsored by the Lake Tulloch Lions Club of Calaveras County on August 16 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Pre-registration entry fees are $15, and $20 at the gate, day-of-admission. Awards are bestowed for first and second place in 13 car classes, with judging taking place from 1 to 3 p.m. Also awarded will be “Best in Show” and the “Copperopolis Town Square Manager’s Award,” as selected by Billie B. Kane. The first 100 entries will receive free souvenir dash plaques, courtesy of Copperopolis Town Square.

Olympic Book Launch

McCracken, Local Author, Launches Olympic Book

Kristi McCracken, a valley educator, weekly columnist and published author, is set to launch her latest children’s book about the ancient Olympics. Join her at 6:00 Friday evening, August 22, at Rosso’s Bookstore in Bakersfield for an entertaining multimedia presentation. She’ll sign copies of her book after the talk.

As Olympic fever spreads across the country and the world, many are tuning into to nightly broadcasts of this popular sporting event. With a national focus on the prowess of our most talented athletes, modern day Olympic viewers remind McCracken of the ancient Greeks spectators.

The modern games are doing things on a larger scale. If you add the number of performers and athletes of the Beijing Games, that would surpass the total spectators who viewed the ancient Olympics at their peak. Beijing estimates about seven million spectators for 17 days of competition. The 40,000 Greeks traveled to watch five days of sporting festivals.

While the modern games are known by the city that hosts them such as the Beijing Olympics, the ancient Greeks named their Olympics for the winner of the stade race which is similar to our 100 meter dash. Stade means the length of the stadium. The first games were known as the Korebos Games after the man who won the stade. Even though the modern games are known for the city name, this year’s Olympics might be remembered by the athlete who swam the fastest - the Phelp’s Games.

McCracken is enthralled with the physical accomplishments of the Olympic contenders and stays up late to watch the games. Since she is a “forty something” gal who swims laps regularly, she cheered Dara Torres on for each of her silver medals.

Kristi’s son, Drew, is a nationally ranked swimmer, so she watched each of Michael Phelps events as well. Drew placed fourth in the butterfly at national competition this spring in a high tech swimsuit that had been given to him by Jason Lezak.

Lezak’s name hadn’t meant much to McCracken until she saw his incredible anchor leg of the 4 x 100 relay where he “out-touched” the Frenchman for the gold medal. McCracken’s son called her at midnight after that race and said, “Did you see that Mom? He’s the guy that gave me my swimsuit. My coach introduced me to Jason Lezak when he was visiting campus before nationals. Jason and I wear the same size suit and he had extra ones from his sponsors. He let me have my pick.”

McCracken speaks with pride about her son and says that birthing a book is about like having another child. Her Olympic book is written at the fourth grade level with sixth grade content. This easy to read book helps interest intermediate students in learning facts about Greek history. The entire book is also available on a read along CD which is helpful for squirmy travelers in the car and struggling readers who need extra support for comprehension.

When asked about the content of her book, she talked about all the interesting facts she learned while researching the ancient Olympics. For example, today Nike refers to a brand of athletic wear, but in Greece long ago, Nike was known as the goddess of victory. Athletes made offerings to statues of her before they competed.

The ancient Olympic ceremonies also involved the sacrifice of white oxen to Zeus. This not only fed the spectators, but boys especially like reading about the gross blood pouring out onto the ground and the flies that it attracted.

As an educator not only does she teach gifted fifth graders, but she is a workshop presenter to other educators at conferences across the state. You’re in for a treat as she’s a seasoned speaker who’s spoken at various state conferences for GATE (Gifted and Talented Education), CUE (Computer Using Educators), and for the CRA (California Reading Association) to audiences of hundreds.

Since her home town of Porterville no longer has a bookstore, she’s launching her latest book in Bakersfield. Come meet the author at 6:00 on Friday night at Russo’s Bookstore four miles west of Highway 99 on Ming Avenue in the Marketplace shopping center. She said she scheduled the event early enough that you can get home to watch the modern Olympics after her book talk.
