Catholic Charities / Community Action Partnership and KGET 17 are sponsoring a School Uniform Drive. Bring white or navy Polo shirts and tan or navy pants, skirts or shorts to the "Drive Thru" at the Weil Institue Parking lot on July 23rd. Cash donations will also accepted. Catholic Charities will provide your tax donation receipt. More than 30 city school require school uniforms, yet many are in areas with high poverty rates. Help make a child "fit in" by "fitting out" a child in a new school uniform. Donations will also be accepted anytime now through August 1st at Catholic Charities, 525 18th Street.

Kern County Democrats First Wednesdays

The Kern County Democratic Party hosts a get-together the first Wednesday of each month at Dagny’s Coffee. Community Reading Project Seeks Volunteers

How would you like to make an impact on the lives of second-grade students who are experiencing reading difficulties? You can by volunteering to tutor four students for one hour-a- week in the fall 2008 semester of the Community Reading Project.

Sponsored by the Kern County Superintendent of Schools and The Bakersfield Californian, Community Reading Project trains and places volunteer tutors to work in teams of five. This method helps students receive assistance every day of the school week.

Community Reading Project does produce results. Student reading, measured at the end of each semester of tutoring, averaged almost two years of growth per tutored pupil for the 2007-08 school year.

Volunteer training for the fall semester is required and involves only two hours. Those interested can choose between any of three training sessions on Aug. 23 from 9-11 a.m., Aug. 26 from 6-8 p.m. or Aug. 27 from 3-5 p.m., at University Square, 2000 K Street in Bakersfield. School orientation will take place on Sept. 15 from 4-6 p.m.

No pre-registration is necessary.

'Do the Math' Returns

Do the Math on TV returns for its sixth season beginning Sept. 2, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, from 4-5 p.m. on Bright House Networks Ch. 15 and in Eastern Kern on Charter Cable Ch. 46 and 19, as well as MediaCom Ch. 3. Certificated math teachers will be taking calls and working problems over the phone with students from 3:30-5:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Students desiring a little extra help with their math homework can dial the Do the Math help lines, (661) 636-4357 and toll free (866) 636-6284, 3:30-5:30 p.m, to have problems solved over the phone. Covenant Community Services: CARENET Furniture Drop Off Day

Through Covenant CARENET, Covenant Community Services provides goods and services to foster children returning home to their families and foster youth who are emancipating from foster care. The mission of CARENET is providing services and resources to foster children returning to their families and youth leaving the foster care system equipping them for successful transitions. CARENET is a partnership with the Kern County Department of Human Services and the Juvenile Court system. This program is supported by the donations of our community and through a grant received from United Way of Kern County.

CARENET is collecting gently used and new furniture, which will be distributed to Kern County’s foster children and emancipating foster youth. On Saturday, September 13^th, CARENET staff will be collecting beds, bedding, couches, tables, refrigerators, washing machines, dryers and other household necessities. Please bring donations to 1801 Belle Terrace between 8AM – 1PM. Each donor will be provided with a receipt for all donations. The Reading Express Book Drive At Russo's Books

In an effort to promote literacy among young children in our community, Golden Empire Transit (GET) will launch The Reading Express, an on-board library program in September 2008.

The Reading Express is geared towards children ages birth to 3rd grade and will encourage early literacy. During the initial kick-off, forty-one of GET's buses will be stocked with a selection of children's books for kids to read while commuting with their parents. As new buses are added to the fleet, they too will be stocked with books.

Russo's Books at The Marketplace will host the 1st Book Drive for The Reading Express on Saturday September 13th from 1pm-3pm. Donate a book and receive a coupon for a free scoop of ice cream, courtesy of Baskin- Robbins.

Bakersfield Buddy Walk 2008

The public is welcome to participate in the sixth annual Bakersfield Buddy Walk to promote understanding and acceptance of people with Down syndrome. This year’s walk is scheduled for:

All Bakersfield area Rotary Clubs work jointly to sponsor this event, in conjunction with Kern Regional Center, Mercy Hospital and other local organizations. Participants will walk four laps around the track at the Golden Valley High School football field, for a total of one mile. The event will also showcase small businesses that are operated by people with Down syndrome and other developmental disabilities. Food, entertainment, games and prizes will also be available.

Anyone who wants to support acceptance and inclusion of people with Down syndrome is welcome to participate in the Buddy Walk. The Buddy Walk program is supported at the national level by the National Down Syndrome Society. Started in 1995, hundreds of thousands of people walk from coast to coast and around the world each year. Buddy walks have raised more than $6.5 million to promote education, research and advocacy for Down syndrome.

Down syndrome is a genetic condition that occurs in approximately one in every 733 live births. It affects people of all ages, races and economic levels and is the most frequently occurring chromosomal abnormality. The incidence of births of children with Down syndrome increases with the age of the mother. It occurs when there are three, rather than two, number 21 chromosomes present in every cell of the body. Instead of the usual 46 chromosomes, a person with Down syndrome has 47.

All people with Down syndrome experience cognitive delays, but the effect is usually mild to moderate. Quality educational programs, a stimulating home environment, good health care and positive support from family and friends enable people with Down syndrome to develop their full potential and lead fulfilling lives. Kern County Animal Control's Off-Site Adoption Event

Adoptable dogs available from the Kern County Animal Shelter in Bakersfield. Dogs are available for adoption for $75 and includes the spay or neuter surgery, a rabies vaccination and a one year Kern County dog license. Each dog will also receive a Petco coupon book, a starter bag of Science Diet food, a leash and a pet related DVD.

The Reading Express Book Drive at the Bakersfield City Fire Station

In an effort to promote literacy among young children in our community, Golden Empire Transit (GET) has launched The Reading Express, an on-board library program.

The Bakersfield City Fire Station will be hosting a Book Drive for The Reading Express on Saturday, October 11th from 11am-1pm. Donate a book and receive a Fruit Bar courtesy of La Rosa Fruit Bars & Ice Cream, Inc. There will also be FREE tours of the Fire Station and a KRAB Live Remote.

Now you can share the books that your kids and grandkids have outgrown by donating them to The Reading Express. All of those great old stories will be new again to a whole new generation of readers. See you at the Bakersfield City Fire Station on the 11th!

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and Team Racing for Ta-Ta’s will hold our 1^st annual Relay For Life Yard Sale Fundraiser on Saturday October 11 at Christ’s Church of the Valley, 13701 Stockdale Hwy on the corner of Stockdale and Jewetta. 7:00 am – 4:00 pm. A large selection of toys, clothes, furniture, electronics, and other items will be available at great prices. Snacks and drinks will also be available for purchase.

The Fox Theater will be opening its doors to the public for an opportunity to view the third and final debate between Presidential candidates Senator John McCain and Senator Barack Obama. Come in and view the debate on our large 21'x46' screen and get a chance to communicate with other members of the community about this year's election. Banners, picket boards, signs and similar materials will not be permitted into the building.

BAKERSFIELD RESCUE MISSION FOOD DRIVE

Please join us in our attempt to help feed the less fortunate this Thanksgiving. We are holding our 2nd Food Drive for the Bakersfield Rescue Mission. The food drive lasts through Nov. 26.

Last year was our first Food Drive and somone actually stole the donations that we received. Luckily the public came together and donated more food to make up for what was lost. We collected: 64 cans of peas, 28 cans of yams, 48 cans of corn, 48 cans of green beans, 15 boxes of stuffing, 2 bags of long grain rice, boxes of hot chocolate, 17 boxes of Mac and Cheese, 26 cans of cranberries and 39 misc cans of food. We also received 8 turkeys and 2 hams. The food donations that we receive will help ensure that we will be able to help provide dinner to the many needy and homeless that go to the Rescue Mission during Holiday seasons. They serve 3 meals a day and the number seems to increase during the winter months. Food Drive such as ours will help the Bakersield Rescue Mission feed the homeless and needy from Bakersfield and Kern County. For those who donate food you will receive a raffle ticket for a TV that I am giving away as a special incentive.

KernCorps Plans to ‘Make A Difference’

KernCorps AmeriCorps, administered through the Kern County Superintendent of Schools Office, is teaming up in with the Cesar Chavez Service Learning Club of Mountain View Middle School to host a Make A Difference Day, Lamont Community Cleanup on Oct. 25 from 8:30 a.m.-12 p.m.

Volunteers will meet at the Lamont Library, 8304 Segrue Road at 8:30 and with supplies from Kern County Waste Management, divide up into clean-up teams of adults and youth to pick up litter throughout the Lamont community.

A designated group of volunteers will research the amount of litter collecting on Main Street in an on-going effort to install community trash cans.

Swearing in ceremonies for 18 new Kern Corps members working in Bakersfield, Delano, Lamont, Shafter and Wasco will take place prior to the clean up effort. KernCorps members commit themselves to a year of tutoring and mentoring; working on school safety, child abuse and child care issues and projects to improve neighborhood environments for children.

Make A Difference Day challenges individuals nationally to spend the fourth Saturday in October “making a difference” in their communities or in the lives of others. Nearly 2.2 million volunteers participate nationally benefiting 25 million people.

With Open Arms City-wide Rally

A city-wide rally is scheduled for Saturday, October 25 at 1:00 p.m. at Cecil Ave Park in Delano. The theme of the rally is "With Open Arms."

This rally is an endeavor by local churches, businesses, poiticians & the community at large to reach out to the youth of Delano.

Free food and soft drinks will be provided for attendees. Several raffles will take place during the event to raffles off prizes as ipods, dvd players, gift certificates and much more.

A "live" concert featuring local alternative & rap artist will be featured. A strong and positive message will go forth during this event through music and testimonials. Anyone wishing to help donate to this worthy cause may contact Rudy Rodriguez at 721-0111. All financial contributions will receive a tax deductible receipt. We also welcome donation of gift certificates or items from places of business. Those donating a minimum of $100 are invited to set up a booth for their business at this event providing materials distributed are positive in nature.

Girls at Risk seminar

Criminologist/socialigist Gabriela G. Baeza will present an important two day seminar called “Girls: Risk Factors, Trends and Strategies,” in Bakersfield on Oct. 27-28, from 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m., each day, in room 1B, Kern County Superintendent of Schools Office (KCSOS), 1300 17th Street in Bakersfield. Cost to attend is $120, which includes materials, breakfast and lunch. Applications must be received no later than Oct. 23. Baeza, director of Saving Our Starfish (S.O.S.), has been providing parents, teachers, and community agencies with research-based and effective strategies for working with at-risk youth for 10 years. Her seminar will focus on a segment of the juvenile population whose crime statistics have risen dramatically in the last few years — “Girls.”

According to 2005 national statistics from the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OFFDP ), violent crime among girls, ages 10-17, increased 16. 5 percent over the last decade, aggravated assault rates doubled during the last 20 years and drug abuse violations were up 56 percent.

Topics of discussion include teen relationship violence, gang involvement, aggression/bullying, substance abuse, body image and women in the media. Participants will gain an understanding of the research, receive materials and resources for working with girls and learn how to implement activity strategies.
