Bakersfield Symphony Orchestra previews The Nutcracker Ballet at Russo’s Books!

Mice, toy soldiers and ballerinas. A piano, a flute and a clarinet. Dancers dancing, music playing… This is a book store? No, not just any bookstore… This is Russo’s Books in The Marketplace.

Russo’s Books hosted The Bakersfield Symphony Orchestra for their preview of Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker Ballet with children in full costume, parents in full video mode and shoppers watching with smiles on their faces.

Kids Discover Music is a much anticipated event where classically trained musicians make their way to the bookstore stage to play beautiful music, read a story and let the kids learn up close and personally about the music, the instrument they play and the history behind the instrument.

On November 21^st, some members of the orchestra came out to perform a preview of their yearly holiday presentation of The Nutcracker, complete with children dressed as mice, toy soldiers, ballerinas and Russian dancers! Children waited on the sidelines to twirl, leap and pirouette for the masses. The Mouse King battled with the Nutcracker, Russians danced and snowflakes waltzed… Oh, and that's not all! Two families won two family four-packs to The Nutcracker performance at Rabobank Arena! The whole thing was very lovely. It meant, to me, that Christmas is just around the corner.

Russo’s Books along with Valley Public Television and The Bakersfield Symphony Orchestra will present Kids Discover Music on the third Saturday of every month at 11:00 AM (except December), and will return with Tom Meyer on strings January 16, 2010.

The Bakersfield Symphony Orchestra will perform Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker Ballet on December 11^th, 12^th and 13^th at Rabobank Arena. Tickets are available at the box-office and through Ticketmaster.

Donation-Based Theater Actually Needs Donations!

Being involved with a local community theater gives you a personal sense of gratification. Not only are you volunteering your personal time and energy to a good cause, you’re involving yourself with an organization that thrives on creativity. You meet people, like yourself, who are interested in “the arts” and who have also decided to donate their time to keep this thing going. I’m continuously in awe of the people I work with on this. People, like you and me, who donate a good portion of their lives for the chance to run, perform in, produce and/or direct a play in this venue. It is such a joy to see it come about, from inception to production to performance... and to offer it to the public at a suggested donation of $15 for adults and $10 for children under 12, and $10 for seniors 55+, is truly a bargain.

Therein lies the problem. Not in the suggested amount, but in the amount of the donation itself. Many people are very generous, almost to a fault, about the money they donate on a regular basis. Many come in with $5 and we are thankful to receive that. Many come in with a few coins dropped into the jar, and we are thankful for that, too. We sit at the box-office and watch as people come in, and although the sign says “Suggested Donation XXX”, we see many walk in without paying a dime. In many instances, that’s okay. The theater was created for just that. To allow people who otherwise couldn’t afford to pay to view a show the opportunity. Once, cool… Twice… we understand, that’s cool too. Three times? Four times? Hmmm. What can we do?

What we don’t want to do is start to actually charge for admission to our prime time shows with a set price (like we do for our late-night shows). We want to keep our theatre as low cost to the public as we can afford to.

I think we (The Empty Space) are a venue that a lot of people are choosing to attend because it’s become known that donations can be what you can afford. We are proud to be a part of that choice and don’t want to discourage those who plan their weekends accordingly.

However, we do need donations. We can’t exist without donations. We won’t be that choice without donations. Get it?

The shows that people are coming to see come to us at a cost. The building we present these shows in comes to us at a cost. The utilities we use so we can present these shows come at a cost as well. We love that we’re a bargain, but we also need the public to know that we exist solely because of the people who actually donate money to see a show. Without their donations we would not exist!

Large donations are great! Actually, any donation is great! We can issue receipts to anyone who wants to claim their donation on their taxes, as we are a 501c non-profit organization. Memberships are available, too. Corporate sponsorships for any of the shows we present are more than welcome, and all are acknowledged in our programs for the show that is sponsored.

Bottom Line: We can’t be here for you if you don’t donate. We need you. We hope you need us… (at least a little). We’d truly appreciate anything you can do for us… and we thank you.

TONIGHT is the day for the spectacular ARTini fundraising event. We’re sure you’ve all purchased your tickets by now, but just in case, tickets will only be available through www.kernarts.org with a handful being available at the door. The event will kick off tonight at 7 p.m. with an estimated end time of 10 p.m. Tickets are $65 per person or $50 per person if you are a member of the Arts Council of Kern.

Tonight, ARTini is proud to welcome Eddie Perales. He started his career path in nursing school where he bartended evenings for extra money, but the excitement of being behind the bar, {in San Juan Bautista California} was too much to resist. Before long he was into flair and the talent grew to a world ranking of 13th by the Flair Bartender’ Association. In 1997, Eddie decided to capitalize on his experience by opening the doors to a new bartending academy in Bakersfield, earning the recognition of Most Outstanding Small Business by the state that year. Eddie’s creations are too amazing for words, his creativity is unlimited and if you aren’t at ARTini, you’ll be missing out on a show of a lifetime.

With the help and support of the Bakersfield Symphony Orchestra and Valley Public Television, Russo’s Books brings musicians to The Marketplace to perform for you and your children every third Saturday, at 11:00 AM.

Thomas G. Robinson, of Russo’s Books says, “I have a long-standing relationship with this organization and the program for kids, where children get to listen to the musicians up close and personally. These professional, classically trained musicians talk to the children about the music they perform and the instrument they play and have the option to read a story to the kids as well”. Robinson noted that this program is very popular with parents of children from toddlers to teens, and gives them a hands-on experience that they may have never had before. Best of all… IT’S FREE!

Although Kids Discover Music was once at Barnes & Noble, Russo’s Books was thrilled to be given the opportunity to provide the venue for this monthly event. Nancy Marvin, Manager of the Symphony Office, with The Bakersfield Symphony Orchestra, says, “We wanted to go with a store that has local ties to the community and is able to promote the symphony as well. We couldn’t find that relationship with the corporate stores since many of them are not allowed to place posters and flyers in their stores. This will be a wonderful relationship with a great store that has been very active and supportive in the community.”

On Saturday, November 21^st at 11:00 AM, a few of the musicians from the symphony and several children dressed in full costume will perform a preview of The Nutcracker, their annual production for the holidays. Russo’s will be giving away two family four packs to two matinee performances of this show.

Kids Discover Music will be featured on the third Saturday of Every Month at Russo’s Books (except for December) with their next performance on January 16^th, 2010 featuring Tom Meyer on Strings. ARTS COUNCIL OF KERN SHAKES UP THE ART SCENE

“ARTini” Fundraiser Benefits Elementary School Art Programs

For the second year, the Arts Council of Kern is shaking up the arts community by hosting the highly anticipated ARTini. Set twelve stories above the city lights, inside the Stockdale Towers, ARTini is more than a jackpot of fun for your taste buds, with artistic creations of some of Bakersfield’s most talented bartenders.

The mission of the Arts Council of Kern is arts access, advocacy and education - with the funds raised from ARTini the Arts Council will be able to provide access for local schools to have music programs, to try and make up for some of the budget cuts.

“With all the budget cuts for the arts in our local schools, the Arts Council is helping local schools fund programs in the arts,” says Jeanette Richardson, Executive Director for The Arts Council of Kern. “We appreciate the support for music in our schools. Everyone that sponsors or attends ARTini helps put music back into a Kern County school.”

This year’s Las Vegas inspired theme, “Viva Las Bakos,” will resonate throughout the night in Vegas inspired artwork, fabulous food and drink experiences. This could be the one exception of, “what happens here; stays here.” This time you can take some of the fun home with you.

Because there is “art” in bartending, ARTini will be having a friendly martini-making competition between local bartenders. Special guest judges and attendees are encouraged to vote for their favorite drink by sampling these unique concoctions. There is a cash prize for the winning bartender.

Last year’s event was a phenomenal sell-out. With just under 400 guests in attendance, this year’s attendance and evening is expected to be just as exciting, if not more, so get your tickets today!

From Darkness into Light - A Special Concert by Bakersfield College Chorale and Chamber Singers

A journey From Darkness into Light awaits the audience at a special concert event featuring the Bakersfield College Chorale and Chamber Singers with special guests, the Foothill High School Chamber Singers.

“This concert is intended to be an uplifting event from darkness into light,” said Dr. Ronald Kean, director of Bakersfield College choral activities.

From Darkness into Light will be presented on Friday, October 23 at 7:30 p.m. at the First Congregational Church on corner of Stockdale Highway and Real Road.

This special performance features the College’s expanded 90-member choir and 31-member chamber singers under the direction of Dr. Kean, and with accompanied by pianist Elizabeth Cervantes.

Gaslight Melodrama to host fundraiser for Bakersfield Swill Club

The Gaslight Melodrama will be hosting a fund raising show for the Bakersfield Swim Club on Thursday, Oct 8th for the Premier of The Skylight Zone followed by Auntie Teenie Weenies Oildale Halloween Hoedown. All ticket sales will go toward the Bakersfield Swim Club, Bakersfield's oldest swim club since 1972. From infants to Olympians, the Bakersfield Swim Club is a non profit swim team, affiliated with USA Swimming and Central Californian Swimming. Kieth Moore is the head coach and has coached a number of Olympic swimmers including Gabe Woodward, winner of the silver and bronze medal at the 2007 Pan American Games in Brazil.

Proceeds from this event will go toward pool rentals, uniforms and the hosting of the 2010 Jr. Olympics in Bakersfield in February 2010. The Jr. Olympics draw qualifying athletes, in all age groups from all over Central California.

Darwin’s Legacy in the Modern World Explored at Levan Center Discussions

Charles Darwin may be best known for his theories on natural selection.

Born in 1809, Darwin was an English naturalist who realized and researched on the idea that all species of life have evolved from common ancestors. While his idea of natural selection may have become accepted by the scientific community during his lifetime, it took until the 1930s for the concept to truly take root.

Darwin’s legacy in the modern world will be the focus of two panel discussions sponsored by The Norman Levan Center for the Humanities at Bakersfield College.

On Tuesday, October 13, Bakersfield College faculty members will discuss Darwinism, Faith and Morality at 7 p.m. in the College’s Fireside Room. The discussion will center on how all three concepts intertwine, and the panel includes:
• John Carpenter, Bakersfield College Sociology faculty
• Daymon Johnson, Bakersfield College History faculty
• Nick Strobel, Bakersfield College Astronomy faculty

On Wednesday, November 4, Bakersfield College faculty members will discuss Darwinism and Social Thought at 7 p.m. in the College’s Fireside Room. The discussion will center on how all three concepts intertwine, and the panel includes:
• Edward Borgens, Bakersfield College Political Science faculty
• Michael Horvath, Bakersfield College Economics faculty
• Karen Kettner, Bakersfield College Behavioral Science faculty

The Levan Center for the Humanities is made possible by a Foundation contribution from Dr. Norman Levan, a practicing physician in Bakersfield for over 50 years and a strong advocate of examining societal issues.

Ride in to A Knight with the Arts

Painting, theater, music, good food and friends are all important elements of the Bakersfield College Foundation’s second annual A Knight with the Arts, happening Thursday, October 8, at the College’s Indoor Theater, Courtyard and Fine Arts 30 studio, beginning at 5:30 p.m.

Sponsored by the Bakersfield College Foundation and the Edith Finlinson Endowment, the free evening provides opportunities for the community to enjoy a variety of arts-related activities presented by the talented students at Bakersfield College.

A Knight with the Arts features various performances throughout the evening by the Bakersfield College Drum Line, Jazz Band, Concert Band, Orchestra, Chamber Singers and Choir. A student art exhibit will display the visual talents that Bakersfield College students have to offer, and a special performance of “The Play Within a Play” from A Midsummer Night’s Dream, presented by theater students, will cap off the evening.

Admission is free for all performances and gallery showing, though donations will be gratefully accepted and will benefit the Bakersfield College Drum Line. Hors d’oeuvres prepared by Bakersfield College’s culinary arts students will be served during the event, and tickets for wine will be available for one for $5 or three for $10.

“Our students are immensely talented, and to gather them all together in one place, on this one night, is truly a treat for the community,” explained Bakersfield College Foundation executive director Mike Stepanovich. “By welcoming our friends, the people of Bakersfield, to Bakersfield College for this event, we highlight that talent and the creativity which makes this College great.”

Getting Craft With Digital Scrapbooks!

New Age Scrapbopoking-

When most think of scrapbooking, what usually comes to mind is a large table crowded with various tools, scraps of paper and old photos. I have to admit, I was once a victum of such crimes. I almost couldn't scrapbook because my house was turned upside down with unorganized printed photos and all the expensive paper, stickers, and tools that one needs to truly express creativity. I was limited to scrapbooking on long weekends, days off, or when my husband was out of town. I found myself scrapbooking at a friend's house once every three or four months. I was feeling like I was neglecting my hobby, and I didn't like it.

It wasn't until I discovered the digital scrapbooking world that I started scrapbooking at least once a week, if not more! Digital sacrapbooking allows me to organize all my photos. I'm not forced to spend $100's on stickers and paper that never get used up. I have endless use of lettering, themes and more! With traditional albums, I would finish a layout and sometimes find another must have picture in the spread and be disappointed I wouldn't be able to add it in. I resorted to creating another layout of the same theme just to include the exiled picture. Not with digital! Now I have no worries about mistakes or regretted layouts. The fixes are so easy. I also do not have to take up space around my house for storing supplies, and it's always clean!

There are several digital scrapbooks companies to choose from. From places like Wal-Mart.com and Costco.com to specialized companies like kodak.com and creative memories.com, you are sure to find an easy program with many options and price ranges to fit you. I prefer the Creative Memories scrapbpooking software called Storybook Creator Plus 3. You pay a little out of pocket, but compared to what I was spending, I am saving money. The program is versatile and allows both veterans and beginners to create albums to be proud of. Also, their printed albums are gaurenteed quality.

So put away your scissors and glue. It's time for the New Age of Scrapbooking!!

Pulaski Polish Dancers of the Central valley

Pulaski Polish Dancers will perform at the Big Fresno Fair with jaw-dropping, upbeat mountain folk dances

The Pulaski Polish Dancers of Fresno will perform their acrobatic, upbeat and new Polish folk dances at The Big Fresno Fair Sunday October 11, 2009 at 3:30 p.m. in the Pavilion stage area on the fair grounds. The performance is free with paid admission into the fair.

The acrobatic dance mostly performed by men is called Zywiec (Ziviets) and will feature the dancers kicking, hopping, singing and doing exciting stunts. The Polish ensemble will also perform other regal and traditional dances. These dances represent traditions based on Polish folk lore. The costumes are authentic and handmade from Poland.

About the Pulaski Polish Dancers: The Pulaski Polish Dancers of Fresno was started over 30 years ago by Polish native and WWII survivor Bob Kazmier. Their mission is to share their Polish culture, dance and song with pride and exuberance. The group of about

30 members has performed at many local celebrations and festivals throughout the central valley and bay area. Originating in Fresno, the group consists of residents ranging from Coarsegold to Bakersfield bringing their exciting repertoire to the public.

"Tosca" opens Met Opera Live in HD fourth season

New York City's Metropolitan Opera Company opens its fourth Live in HD season with a live performance via satellite of Puccini's "Tosca" at the Edwards Cinema in the Marketplace on Oct. 10 at 10 a.m. Met Music Director James Levine conducts this new production starring Finnish soprano Karita Mattila as a passionate opera singer in love with a painter.

Verdi's "Aida," set in ancient Egypt, at 10 a.m. on Oct. 24 is the second opera of the Live in HD season. Violeta Urmana stars in the title role of the enslaved Ethiopian princess with Dolora Zajick as her rival. Among the score's highlights is the celebrated Triumphal March.

Other upcoming performances include Puccini's "Turandot" (directed by Franco Zeffirelli) on Nov. 7, Offenbach's "Les Contes d'Hoffmann" (with Anna Netrebko) on Dec. 19), and Strauss' "Der Rosenkavalier" (with Renee Fleming) on Jan. 9. The popular Live in HD series will be played at more than 600 theatres around the world.

Executive Director of the nonprofit, Audrey Chavez says the organization would like to purchase the house at an estimated $90,000. So far $35,000 has been raised.

In a grass roots effort to aid the nonprofit in a vulnerable state, a handful of friends decided to take a stand and lend a helping hand. Throughout the months of September through December, a handful of fundraisers will take place to raise money for the hospice home and resource center.

On the evening of September 15, 2009 “Saving Grace,” the first fundraiser to benefit Ricky’s Retreat will be held at the chic Metro Galleries in downtown Bakersfield. The event promises to be a night of tasting fine wines, an exquisite silent auction of local art and phenomenal acoustic music by the talented Eric Himan.

David Trujillo was inspired by the organization’s mission and dedication to its community. In order to help the organization reach its goal, Trujillo has organized a small group of friends to help him in his mission to aid the nonprofit organization by creating a handful of small fundraising events between September and December 1. The goal is to try and raise $50,000.

“I saw Audrey Chavez’s call for assistance early this year. I hadn't been involved in the community and thought this was an opportunity for me to get active,” Trujillo says. “After speaking with Audrey and learning how she was inspired after the passing of her brother, it was evident she had a compassion for this community. When someone gives from the heart, like Audrey does, you know her clients are receiving both care and love. It is great to witness her dedication.”

Performing at the event is indie-rocker, Eric Himan. Having made a name for himself in support of civil rights and local AIDS foundations across the country, Eric was eager to help Bakersfield’s AIDS Project.

“I have friends who are HIV+ and who have at times been diagnosed with AIDS and fortunately for them (and for these times), they were able to bring their T-cell counts up,” Himan says. “I hear my older friends speak of those who have passed away to AIDS and I want to be able to do something to help raise awareness and money, for not just my friends but for those close to me, too.”

In 2003, Bakersfield's AIDS Project (BAP) volunteers realized from a different perspective the shortage of housing and hospice homes for local people living with AIDS when a 34 year old woman begged a BAP volunteer to take her home, as she did not want to die in a hospital.

Bakersfield’s AIDS Project searched until they found a beautiful four-bedroom home that was built in 1912 in East Bakersfield. The woman's peace of mind was apparent in her smile as she looked upon the team of volunteers who quickly readied the place for her welcome. Her children were able to visit and shared her last days alongside her in peace and surrounded by love and compassion.

Omnipresent Puppet Theater announces Fall Season at the Melodrama

The Omnipresent Puppet Theater has announced that they will be performing two shows this Fall at the Gaslight Melodrama, 12748 Jomai Drive, Bakersfield, Ca.

The puppets will be performing Jack and the Beanstalk, Saturday, Sept. 5th, 12th and 19th at 11AM and 2PM and Hansel and Gretal, November 7th, 14th and 21st at 11AM and 2PM.

The Omnipresent Puppet Theater is a labor of love by husband and wife team Don and Kamala Kruska.

Don as the head puppeteer brings over fifteen years of professional experience to his work. From writing the scripts, to building the puppets, to performing in the shows, Don does it all.

Kamala holds her MFA in theater Education from Arizona State University and brings her experience as a theater educator to the puppet shows.

From their first Bakersfield performance in 2006, they have gained the reputation for being a popular chioce for children's entertainment.

Musica Viva on the road to Bakersfield

    Musica Viva, an exciting young chamber ensemble that has been performing in California and Mexico since 2003, will be offering their first Bakersfield concert on Sept. 20 at 4 p.m. in the sanctuary of First Congregational Church, 5 Real Rd. Their program will range from the Baroque through the 20th Century, including Donizetti, Leoncavallo, Saint-Saens, and Pilley.
    The group features cellist Dieter Wulfhorst, violinist Susan Doering and harpist Laura Porter. Musica Viva was founded by Wulfhorst and Doering, who is his wife, in 2002. All are on the faculty of Fresno Pacific University and perform professionally in other venues.
    Wulfhorst came to the U.S. from Germany in 1985 to study with David Soyer and the Guarneri Quartet. His favorite musicians include cellists Anner Bylsma, Steven Isserlis and Pieter Wispelwey and gambist Jordi Savall.
    “I love to listen to historical recordings, especially singers,” he said in a recent interview. “We listen to nonclassical music and love to play in all styles.” Musica Viva recently performed with Smokey Robinson, the Motown group Spectrum and IlDivo. Their recording with the vocal ensemble Conspirare was recently nominated for two Grammy awards.
    Doering has extensive performance background throughout the Americas as well as in Europe, the Middle East and the Far East. Her public radio broadcasts have included NPR’s “Performance Today.” In the summers she has taught and performed in Sweden and at music festivals and camps throughout the U.S. She also is a music therapist.
    Doering grew up in a family of six children, four of whom are now professional musicians. “My parents always encouraged us to play a variety of instruments and to explore the world of sound,” she said. She started out playing piano at age 7, then switched to the Suzuki violin program through the public schools.
    “I liked the piano, but I loved the violin from the moment I first heard it and then held it in my arms. She enjoys all kinds of music, including world music from South Africa and South America.
    Porter migrated 20 years ago to Fresno from Tucson after winning the principal harp audition for the Fresno Philharmonic. She also plays for the Bakersfield Symphony in the same position and performs for weddings and social or corporate events. “My parents are musical,” she said. “So music was something that was everywhere in my early life. The sound the harp is so immediate. When you pluck a string, there is nothing between you and the string. It is magical.”
    Porter has frequently appeared in concert with her friend, flutist Nancy Ayala, from Bakersfield. They perform as Duo Cantilena.
    The Musica Viva event is the first concert of the new season of the Fred and Beverly Dukes Memorial Concert Series at First Congregational Church. “We hold these concerts in our sanctuary because of its excellent acoustics,” said concert chairperson Helen Rummelsberg. “This is our fourth season of offering exceptional music free of charge to the community.”
    Other concerts in the series will feature Banshee in the Kitchen on Nov. 1, the Southside Chicago Seven on Nov. 22, Violinist Gordon Mehling and pianist Rachel Chao on March 7, and the Young Artists of Kern on May 2. All concerts are on Sundays at 4 p.m.

Bakersfield Keynotes Invite New Members and Offer Programs

The Bakersfield Keynotes are inviting all interested adult women to join us in song. We perform two local concerts per year and at the California Women's Chorus Convention. We also perform for local groups and organizations from time to time.

Our practices are on Tuesdays, beginning at 6:30 p.m. and are temporarily at Northminster Presbyterian Church on Union Avenue across from the old Maitia's building. If you like singing all kinds of music, please join us.

We are a non-profit organization, originally founded in 1932. We have continued through to 2009, after having helped found the California Women's Chorus in 1970. We give music scholarships each year to local students entering college in the hopes that they will in turn serve our communities in the future.

King Lear and A Midsummer Night’s Dream Highlight 2009 Kern Shakespeare Festival

Productions of King Lear and A Midsummer Night’s Dream will begin with an opening night on Tuesday, September 15 and will run for two weeks, with an alternating performance each evening in Bakersfield College’s Indoor Theater.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream is a romantic comedy by William Shakespeare set in a moonlit forest where the forays of four young Athenians and a group of amateur actors are intertwined with the Duke of Athens, Theseus, the Queen of the Amazons, Hippolyta, and with the fairies who inhabit the forest. A Midsummer Night’s Dream will be performed on September 15, 17, 19, 23 and 27.

King Lear is a tragedy by William Shakespeare where Lear seeks to divide the Kingdom of Britian among his three daughters Goneril, Regan and Cordelia. The tale weaves in and out of a father’s love for his daughters – only one of which loves him back purely – and the tragedy which forms out of that bond. King Lear will be performed on September 16, 18, 20, 22, 24 and 26.

All performances of the 2009 Kern Shakespeare Festival will begin at 8 p.m. in the Bakersfield College Indoor Theater. BC Alumni Barbecue Coming September 10

The Bakersfield College Alumni Association welcomes the public to join in the festivities at the 55^th annual BBQ, September 10 at Stramler Park on North Chester. All proceeds from the event will assist deserving students with scholarships and benefit athletics on campus. The $20 admittance to the event features a steak or chicken dinner and live entertainment by the Tony Ernst Band.

According to John Boydstun, an original founding member of the Bakersfield College Alumni Association, the group was founded in 1946. World War II had just ended and veterans were returning home. Many of them were graduates of Bakersfield College, eager to renew treasured friendships enjoyed as classmates. Ergo, the Alumni Association was formed. Boydstun further asserts, “The idea was born from a few folks celebrating the end of the war at a dance held in the old Bakersfield Inn Ballroom. There were 20 original members, and dues were a mere $3 a year.” (Dues are only $25 a year today!) In addition to Boydstun, class of 1939, other original board members included Virginia Burress Mosconi, Joe Mosconi, David Fanucchi, Rue Pollock, Win Cooper, Hazel Morton Reese, Art Sargeant, and Doyle Miller. Boydstun was the first President and Miller, a local judge, wrote the first constitution.

Bakersfield College has produced many successful alumni including John Boydstun, Charlie Dodge, Herb Loken, Dan O’Neill, David Fanucchi, Bill Williamson, Glenn Bultman, Dr. Romain Clerou, Louie Lemucchi, Grace Bird, Virginia Mosconi, Marie Amestoy, Ed Simonson, Edna Taber, Dean Gay, Mary K. Shell, Dr. Robert Sheldon, Angus Marchbanks, Don Hart, Jim Young, and Dr. David Zachery. Other notables include Gary Friedman, Superior Court Judge, Morgan Clayton, Owner Tel-Tec, Colby Lewis, Pitcher for the Texas Rangers, Harvey Hall, Mayor, Ken Byrum Attorney, Dean Florez, California Senator, Frank Gifford of football fame, and Hank Pfister of tennis fame.

This year’s barbecue is a far cry from the first of such events. According to Herb Loken, former Bakersfield College Athletic Director, “the initial barbecues, first organized by Dean Gay, were men-only events held at Jastro Park. In attendance were BC athletic supporters, the Renegade football team and its first coach, Jack Frost. All they required was a keg and steaks!” Loken subsequently suggested the inclusion of women and the expansion of the event as a fundraiser.

The Alumni Board invites you to join Bakersfield College alumni, faculty, athletic teams, and the community on September 10 at Stramler Park. Social hour begins at 5:30 p.m. and dinner will be served from 6 – 8 p.m. The event, sponsored by KERN, KGET, and the Diane S. Lake Family, is the major fundraiser of the year for the Alumni Association. All proceeds benefit Bakersfield College students academically and athletically. New Californian format

I put short vacation hold on this newspaper while we spend a week at our second home in Lake Isabella. Two days later here at Isabella, I buy a paper from a dispensor. Sure, I had read of the new format, but what the heck is this poorly conceived rag! Just put a picture of a space alien, and it could pass as some cheap tabloid. How are my husband and I to share the paper over coffee in the morning? I am sure this is a part of many households routine. To add to the dislike of this rag, I have small hands, and this is too much for me to handle. What is with the upside down classifieds? I am sure there is a pschological explanation for this. I pay a year in advance for this paper, and be sure when time comes for renewal, I will not renew. The Fresno Bee is a consideration, or the People magazine.

Twenty Reasons to Visit Imbibe Wine

Over the past twenty years I have traveled to Napa Valley in excess of one hundred times. My goal of each visit is to find and make some new friends. Many of you who read this story will learn about wineries you've never heard of before. We at Imbibe Wine and Spirits work hard to inform you about the latest new releases and producers that come to market. We're asking where the grapes coming from and who is making the wine. Without great grapes you can not make great wine and you need a talented wine maker as well to make great wine. The following is a list of who I feel is doing a great job at the art of wine making. When you’re out dining or shopping for wine I would encourage you to try some of the new guard represented on this list.

Neal Family Vineyards. Owner Make Neal has been farming Napa Valley for sometime now and what he puts in his bottles is OUTSTANDING. Look for his Napa Cabernet along with his Vineyard Designates and if you are lucky enough to find his Petit Syrah or Sauvignon Blanc, grab it.

Paradigm Winery. Owners Ren and Marilyn are as good as it gets. Their vineyards are the same. Located in the Oakville appellation, Paradigm Cabernet and Merlot is on the top tier of quality. With great grapes and help from Heidi Peterson-Barrett, how can you go wrong. LOOK for these wines.

Larkmead Vineyards. Owners Cam and Kate Baker have some of the finest dirt in Napa Valley and with great people like Colin MacPhail and Andy Smith it is sure to be at the top of everyone’s list.

Rudd Oakville Estate. No one is more committed to making the finest wine possible than Leslie Rudd, period.

Madrigal Vineyards. Owners Chris and Jess Madrigal (The real deal). Chris is the Mayor of Napa Valley in my opinion. Look for their Petite Syrah - the best in the valley, along with their Zin and Cab.

Revana Family Vineyards. Very limited and very good. Always one of the wines of the vintage. Another fine effort of Heidi Peterson-Barrett.

Stanton Vineyards. A great farmer of grapes and we all know it takes great grapes to make great wine. Look for his Cabernet and Petit Syrah.

Tamber Bey Vineyards. Owner Barry Waitte and the Tamber Bey wines are one of my recent finds. An outstanding Cabernet from Oakville. They also produce a great effort from Yountville.

Wolf Family Vineyards. I have been a fan of these wines and of winemaker Karen Culler for sometime now. Karen does an outstanding job with this estate. A beautiful property that produces some of the Valley’s finest wine.

Versant Vineyards. Owner Richard Martin has some of the finest grapes in the valley. Each time I put a Versant Cabernet in a blind tasting it is the winner. Very limited! One taste and you will know why it is a winner.

Karl Lawrence Cellars. Owner Michael Karl Trujillo is a prince. I have know Michael for some time now and his label is one of the most consistent and mouth watering Cabernets in the world.

Ladera Vineyards. Owners Patrick and Anne Stotesbery have come to the market with a great product and a great team. Another fine wine made by Karen Culler. Look for this outstanding Cabernet that comes from Howell Mountain. You will be glad you did.

Dumol. Partner Kerry Murphy has put a team together that is second to none. Dumol produces the finest Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in California. Now that is saying something.

Cloudview Vineyards. Always a favorite of mine. I have known Linda and Leighton for sometime know and each year they make a outstanding blend of Cabernet and Merlot from Prichard Hill. The wine is limited but well worth the effort to track down. Some of the finest people in the world.

Krupp Brothers Estates. Brothers Jan and Bart Krupp farm what has turned out to be the biggest undertaking in all of Napa Valley. Most men would never take on such a challenge. The Brothers Krupp have been justly rewarded with a waiting list a mile long for their grapes and the keep the best for themselves.

Dierberg Estate Vineyard. Owners Jim and Mary Dierberg have come to California in a big way. With over 230 acres planted and 26,000 square feet of caves, winemaker Nick De Luca has all the tools to make great wine and if he has any questions he can ask his consulting winemaker David Ramey, who is one of the finest in the world. I love this wine and you will too. Also look for the Three Saints Label.

Audelssa Estate Winery. Audelssa in my opinion is the finest Cabernet and Syrah coming out of Sonoma. Winemaker Erich Bradley is making some of the finest wine in California. He has worked under Richard Arrowood and David Ramey, two American icons in winemaking. One of my greatest finds.

Cristom. If Pinot Noir is your favorite wine - as it should be - then Cristom is your wine. Winemaker Steve Doermer is Mr. Pinot Noir in America. I have tasted great wine from around the world and the wines of Cristom are as fine as any in the world. Taste for yourself, you will be glad you did.

Anselmo Vigne. My latest find in Napa Valley. Anselmo Vigne is located in the Stag’s Leap AVA and is making some outstanding wines. With the addition of Karen Culler to the team owners Steve and Cecilia have got into the big leagues in a big way. The wine is very limited but worth the effort to search out.

Altamura. Frank and Karen have been in the Napa Valley most all of their lives. Frank made a name for himself as wine maker at Caymus Vineyards for close to ten years. After leaving Caymus, Frank started Altamura Vineyards and has been making the finest Sangiovese in America, along with am outstanding Cabernet that is starting to get some press. I have been talking about Altamura for over ten years and it’s about time you start asking about them.

Do you remember how C.B (Charlie Brown) and his dog Snoopy were inseparable in the old days? Now that this beloved dog has passed, C.B., in true caricature, journeys deeply into soul searching about the meaning of life and doggie heaven and along the way discovers he and his warm and sympathetic friend Beethoven (Schroeder) are closer than they both care to admit. And then there’s C.B.’s sister (Sally) who went goth, and Matt (Pig-Pen) is a pathological neat-freak, and Tricia York (Peppermint Patty) and Marcy are a pair of partying "mean girls", Van (Linus), always the philosopher in childhood, is now a pothead with a worldview to match. And the world's greatest fuss-budget Van's Sister (Lucy) has been institutionalized for setting the Little Red-Haired Girl's hair on fire. The wickedly funny premise that Royal explores in this off Broadway hit is zany, yet often poignant and is a treat for lovers of these very ‘adult’ kids from the past.

This warm hearted production has a fast pace and the laughs keep on coming. If you love fringe theatre and high quality performances, Royal’s irreverent play has cuddly comedy versus edgy elements and the two blend with ease.

My Big Fat Oildale Fundraiser

The Gaslight Melodrama Theatre is bringing back the wedding of the century... the Oildale century that is and just in time to celebrate Oildale's 100th Birthday.

In honor of theOildale Centenniel, the Gaslight Melodrama is hosting an opening night, red carpet gala of My Big Fat Oildale Wedding on Thursday, July 9th at 7pm. All ticket sales will be donated to the Oildale Centennial Commitee to help with beautification projects in Oildale.

Local writer develops psychic romance as first novel

    A dazed woman awakens in a tawdry hotel room at a truck stop on Interstate 5 somewhere between Los Angeles and San Francisco. A bloody knife slips from her fingers to the blood-soaked carpet.   Is she a killer or perhaps even a victim of a horrific crime?
    Thus begins a suspenseful first novel by Trish Lamoree, who graduated from Bakersfield High School in 1987 as Patti Terrell. (Coincidentally, her married surname really is “Lamoree,” a perfect name for a writer of romance novels.) Once a web master and designer at the Riviera Hotel and Casino on the Strip in Las Vegas, Lamoree entered the publishing world due to an illness that requires that she work at home.
   Lamoree describes Painting the Roses Red as a “psychic romance,” and the novel (available on Amazon.com in both the Kindle and paperback versions for the past three months) has been compared to Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight series and the writings of Laura K. Hamilton and Dean Koontz.
    “In some ways my novel’s a combination of Alice in Wonderland and Phantom of the Opera,” Lamoree said. “I’m good at smashing things together and making them work out. I was always the one who wanted the heroine to go home with the phantom.”
    Local readers may well identify with the novel’s 20-something heroine, Tiara, who spends time in Bakersfield where she attends her 10th high school reunion. Tiara is “not ugly, but not beautiful either. I want the reader to identify with her.” In spite of dark dreams and disturbing visions, Tiara is persistent as she searches for love and her identity.
    Lamoree began the novel three years ago, about the time her daughter, Kittrianna, was born, then put it on hold for two years when she learned about Amazon’s free publication of novels for the Kindle, a handheld computer designed to display books downloaded off the Internet. Amazon partners with a printer that publishes paperback versions of Kindle books on demand.
    “You have to do all your own typing, formatting and cover art,” Lamoree said, “but the cost is reasonable, actually under $100, and you make about $1 per book. The system really enables writers to get their work out there to the public for a nominal fee.” Lamoree’s original cover art depicts a white rose emerging mysteriously from a pool of blood on a black background. In three months since the novel’s publication, Lamoree has almost recovered costs and hopes to do well financially once she receives more name recognition.

She is also involved in an on-line writing group for independent writers, believing in the importance of independent writers becoming as polished as possible. “We need to help each other out,” she said.

     Painting the Roses Red is listed under several categories, including paranormal romance, fairy tale, and mythology. It may even include an element of satire since the ending evinces gentle cynicism about the romance novel genre, “but not everybody may get it,” Lamoree chuckles.
    Most of the reviews on Amazon.com have praised the book’s complex characterization and suspense .“I was constantly surprised by the author's ability to weave out of my line of thinking and go in a completely different direction that made complete sense,“ one Amazon.com reviewer said. “The book is well written with wonderfully rich characters and descriptions so vivid they can make you shudder.”
    Lamoree has already begun her second novel, in which Rianna, a character from the first novel, searches to fulfill her dreams. “Rianna comes alive for me in a story of her own, which will be more a mystery and suspense than a romance. She’s not Tiara, but Tiara will make a cameo appearance.” Eventually Lamoree wants to write science fiction and horror. She particularly admires the work of 83-year-old American fantasy writer Anne McCaffrey, best known for her Dragonriders of Pern series.

BCT Playhouse's Annual One Act Festival Is Sure To Not Disappoint

The Bakersfield Community Theater Playhouse has been striving for no less than top notch shows and performances for the past 82 years. This year, for the 22^nd Annual Original One Act Festival, it will be no different.

The One act festival at BCT has done what other theaters have not: given a voice to local playwrights. For 22 years, this festival has been a proud moment for the theater and to Bakersfield in general. Allowing local playwrights produce their latest play, giving new directors an opportunity to learn and try something new, to enhance their art… that is what this festival is about. The theatergoer can expect to will hear raw dialogue, see new and different situations, and have your thoughts provoked well after the house lights come up and you exit your seat to greet the actors. Everyone involved in the festival is part of this community. Whether it is the writer or the director or even the actors, they are your next door neighbors, being given the opportunity to express their voices and their art, and being allowed to live out their dream whatever it may be. This festival has made that happen for 22 years, and hopefully many more to come.

This year on the slate, we have magnificent shows by some already established local authors, as well as some newcomers. First up is “Life After Faith” Written by Brian Brown and directed by Deanna Rodgers, second is “Can You Hear Me Now?” written by Terrence G. Phillips and directed by Alex Mayes, third is “Bob” written and directed by Michael Mejia, fourth is “Freezer Burn” written by Michael Mejia and directed by Michael Pawloski, and fifth is “Roommates” written and directed by Andrew Price.

CSUB graduate publishes his first book, Gino the Minnow

Scott Wolford graduated from California State University Bakersfield in 1989 with a bachelors degree in Physical Education. He swam for the Roadrunners. He enjoyed the local lakes and headed for the coast to enjoy California’s water areas whenever possible. After graduated, he earned his masters in Physical Education in 1990 at Florida International University in Miami. Upon graduating he worked in California and St. Augustine for over six years at the Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind as the recreation manager for the visually impaired. He was raised in the Indiana Dunes National Park along Lake Michigan for the beaches that are close by. He worked as a lifeguard on Lake Michigan and spent numerous hours on the beach. Scott grew up with a love for nature and continues to share this love with a series of children's books that encourage us all to do our part in helping keep the environment clean.

Gino the Minnow, is Scott's first published book and it focuses on clean water areas. The hardcover book is beautifully illustrated and shows how one little fish can make a world of difference. His next two books will discuss ways to cleaner land and air qualities and what we can all do to help. $1 will be donated to non-profit organizations who focus on cleaner environments.
Thousands upon thousands of miles of coastal and water masses enrich this beautiful nation of ours. Water is one of the most important natural resources that we have. Here in California we all should be truly grateful having such beautiful beaches near by to enrich our lives. All of us need to take care of our water. Not only for ourselves, but for wildlife and future generations to enjoy. Millions of tons of trash are thrown into the water areas each and every year. This trash can take years to decompose, if ever.

A few facts on the time it takes for some materials to fully decompose:
Paper: 2-8 months, Plastic Coated Cartons: 5 years, Plastic Bags: 10-20 years,
Cigarette Butts: up to 12 years, Tin Cans: 50-100 years,
Aluminum Cans:80-100 years, Batteries: 100 years,
Plastic Six Pack Holder Rings: 450 years, Glass Bottles: 1 million years
Plastic Soda Bottles: Forever

As you can see, it takes some materials a very, very long time to decompose, some last forever. Some people may think that it is much easier to simply toss the trash wherever they are, instead of disposing of it properly. Improper disposal of trash has many bad side effects: harm to wildlife. Some creatures eat the litter thinking it is food. The litter causes damages to the creatures' digestive systems. Also, litter can get tangled in the fins or legs of various animal life, which can cut off circulation or other damage to the their tissues. Fishing line and plastic six pack holder rings are the main culprit in these types of damage to wildlife. Numerous injuries on human life are experienced each year as well. Broken glass bottles, aluminum cans, and other forms of litter can cause havoc on ones' body. The water can be contaminated from litter tossed into the water areas, which makes the water harmful to consume or to swim in for humans and wildlife.
Do you want to see the same trash at your favorite water spot, year after year? What can you do about this problem of litter in our water areas? When you go to the water areas pack for the outing as light as possible. Carry with you as few amounts of future trash items as possible. Several suggestions include using cloth napkins, clean towels and rags, stainless steel silverware, glass or pottery dishes and cups, rechargeable batteries, and a thermos for beverages. Bring a garbage bag with you for all of your trash items, as there may not be any trash cans in the location that you will be going or it may already be filled. Dispose of all of your trash properly. Used fishing line should be recycled. If you see trash left behind by others, please do your part in cleaning up the water areas, by picking it up. Be careful when picking up trash. You should wear proper gloves.
Go for a nice walk along the water. Bring a garbage bag with you, to allow you to pick up any trash that you may see along the way. You’ll get some great exercise, see some beautiful sights, spend quality time with those special to you, and leave a clean water area, which everyone can enjoy. Join an organized beach cleanup group. Start your own beach cleanup group. Do your own beach cleanup each and every time you visit your favorite water area.

It is the gripping and true story of a young man and his search for the truth. Like many people, the young man was a product of a secular environment and in his search for true spirituality; he encountered many bizarre people who were peddling many strange philosophies. However, he was blessed to have met Elder Paisios of the Holy Mountain. A true Holy man and modern Saint. Although he was instructed in the Christian Faith by a Saint. The young man traveled to India to compare Orthodox Christianity and its faithful to yogis and their devotees. I will finish the discription here because, I do not spoil the enjoyment of future readers. However, I would like to share this part were the young man experiences for himself the allure of darkness, and the blessing of the Light. Enjoy;)

One day, sometime after my experience with “my friend” ( the demon that was possessing him that Elder Paisios exorcised ) in the elders yard, I asked the elder about the yogis. By that time, I had become convinced that the yogis worked in cooperation with demons – but I couldn’t understand how it was possible for anyone to make such a choice. “Elder, I just can’t understand why they would want to be evil men. They are intelligent, educated people with many abilities. They don’t have any reason to be evil.” The elder looked at me and shook his head, but didn’t say anything. Shortly afterwards, as planned, I left the Holy Mountain ( Mt. Athos the monastic republic in Greece) in order to be with my family for Pascha ( Easter ) which we would spend in my childhood home of Florina, to which my parents had returned in their retirement.

& nbsp; One afternoon at the beginning of Holy Week ( the week preceding Orthodox Easter ), having made a stop in Thessaloniki, I was by myself in our home there, when, suddenly, my surroundings vanished. There were no images to be seen, sounds to be heard, or objects to be touched. My five senses had ceased functioning. It was as though the light switch had been flicked and the room plunged into total darkness.

& nbsp; My mind turned its full attention to a spiritual realm that it found utterly riveting and captivating. In one direction, I saw a soft but intense light – brilliant but gentle. In the other direction, I saw a thick, cavernous darkness. Initially, I turned my attention towards the awesome, yet fearful, darkness. It made my flesh crawl, but I was overcome by curiosity, the desire to understand what it was. My mind advanced towards the darkness. It had vast power and, if I dare put it this way, a certain grandeur. It represented a negative perspective on reality, unhesitatingly extending into reality as depth, even as the light stretched infinitely into reality as height. On one side , there was immense love; on the other immense hatred. The light was overflowing with unconditional altruism, while the darkness pulled away in utter self-centeredness.

& nbsp; Though I couldn’t see into the darkness, I could feel the presence of souls in it, leaping about, and shrieking with insane, wicked laughter as they were pulled deeper and deeper into the ocean of darkness, until the sound of their voices disappeared altogether. Frightened by this savage madness, I headed towards the light, seeking it’s protection. Just reaching its outskirts, I felt the relief of having been rescued from a grave danger.

& nbsp; Although I didn’t advance very far at all into the darkness, I was able to feel the depths of its evil ocean. I could understand the very essence of the enticing power of sin to tempt, as well as its laughable powerlessness, utter dependence, and shadowy nonexistence. The darkness, I saw, is fearsome when it has won you over, but it is absurd and feeble when you reject it --- it can not defeat even a small child if he does not fall on his own. In the same way I didn’t advance far into the light --- only so to speak, skating its edge --- but even there I felt confident and comforted by a fullness of life, peace, joy, and knowledge. The light loved me greatly in spite of my unworthiness and granted me its gifts I never dreamed existed. At this point, I realized that the light created the world and every living being. The existential space in which each person dwells is itself a creation fashioned by the light, which also fills and permeates these spaces. On being decided to stay outside of the existential space created by the light, thus creating a sort of space for itself, though only by denying the light, turning from it, and driving it away. The darkness has no existence of its own, but only denies the ever-existing and sovereign light. That is to say, the existence of darkness would have been impossible without the existence of the light; though the light had no need of the darkness for existence, for its existence is self-sufficient. The light respected the free decision of its creation to reject it, and so kept its distance. In this way, a dark existential space made its appearance---the darkness, in this sense became a reality.

& nbsp; The darkness resulted from the inclination of a conscious being, called Satan, who chose such a form of existence though he had no reason to. And this denial made the darkness a reality. Although this act of denial may have resembled God’s act of creation, it was not creation, but an imitation of creation performed in reverse. That is the devil tried to behave like God, but, since he did not have the ability to create on his own, he was capable of only denying God’s creation, energies, light, and grace. He pulled away from the very borders of reality and made non-existence a way of being, thus “creating” death and darkness, but all things are filled with light and life.

& nbsp; Just as the light ‘s love wishes to unite all things, being the source of existence and creation, so the hatred of the darkness wants to divide all things, being the source of nonexistence and destruction. Just as the light extends out into infinite beyond, so the darkness seems to extend into its infinite beyond. Just as there is a grandeur about the simple, yet infinite light of God, with all His attributes and energies, so there is a certain grandeur about the blunt, yet apparently infinite darkness of the devil, with all his deep- rooted and ferocious self-destructiveness, full of stubborn and manic rage.

& nbsp; Having come to such realization, I found myself as with a flip of a switch, surrounded again by familiar sights and sounds of my room. Within a matter of minutes, I had a lesson of immeasurable depth. It was not only a revelation beyond word, of subtle differences of profound meaning and great importance, but also --- and even more --- a test and a trial of the deepest inclinations and intentions of my heart, to see whom I would follow and who I would leave behind. Fortunately, although my heart initially moved towards the darkness, it ultimately found repose in the light --- and fortunately, the light still accepted me.

& nbsp; This experience taught me that, just as God surpasses the human mind, so do His works, His creations, and His gifts. On its own, the human mind can only acquire a relative idea about these realities, producing hypothesis, conjectures, opinions, and imaginary presuppositions to justify its views. However aided by the grace of the Holy Spirit, it can begin to fathom these mysteries.

& nbsp; I also received from this experience a deep appreciation of the mystery of human and angelic freedom, a divine gift beyond human understanding. My experience of light and dark helped me to grasp the fact that God endowed angels and men with free will so that they could move independently, freely and without compulsion in the moral sphere. The elder once told me. “God would forgive the devil if he would just say one ‘Lord have mercy.’ There’s a dear old monk near here who used to pray for the devil, because he felt compassion for him. After all the devil was one of god’s creatures --- in fact, he was an archangel before he fell into such a sorry state. While the elder was praying for him, the evil one appeared in the corner and started to make fun of him. The devil is unrepentant.” He concluded. As I would learn latter, this elder was actually Father Paisios. & nbsp;

Two Small Pieces of Glass to Show at Planetarium

Bakersfield College’s William M. Thomas Planetarium has added another show to its Spring 2009 schedule. Two Small Pieces of Glasstraces the history of the telescope from Galileo’s modifications to a child’s spyglass – using two small pieces of glass – to the launch of NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope and the future of astronomy. The show explores the wonder and discovery made by astronomers throughout the last 400 years.

Each one hour show will begin with a short tour of the evening sky using the planetarium's new Goto Chronos star projector, followed by the 25-minute all-dome presentation of Two Small Pieces of Glass featuring the Thomas Planetarium’s Spitz SciDome projector.

The concept of Two Small Pieces of Glass is that while attending a local star party, two teenage students learn how the telescope has helped us understand our place in space and how telescopes continue to expand our understanding of the Universe. Their conversation with a local female astronomer enlightens them on the history of the telescope and the discoveries these wonderful tools have made. The students see how telescopes work and how the largest observatories in the world use these instruments to explore the mysteries of the universe.

While looking through the astronomer's telescope, the students, along with the planetarium audience, explore the Galilean Moons, Saturn's rings, and spiral structure of galaxies. During their conversation with the astronomer, they also learn about the discoveries of Galileo, Huygens, Newton, Hubble and many others. Visuals will include actors green screened into a computer graphic star party environment with a variety of telescopes used by amateur astronomers. As the program progresses the show uses video and full dome imagery to present the story of the telescope and the astronomers who used them to make their dramatic discoveries. All skies and full dome video will transport the planetarium audiences to some of the largest observatories in the world, as well as places of historical significance. The soundtrack was recorded by the London Symphony Orchestra.

Chinese American Association Announces 2009 Board of Directors

The Chinese American Association of Kern County (CAAKC) is pleased to announce its 2009 board of directors. The board of directors is responsible for the organization’s fiscal stability, membership recruitment, event planning and coordination of efforts with other local Chinese organizations.

Bakersfield's entertainment hot spots of the 1950s

Yes, before television and drive in theaters dominated the local night life, old Bakersfield had some really great "hot night spots".

Spawned by the heavily traveled Golden State Highway, motels and restaurants began springing up in the 30's when motorists traveling between Los Angeles to San Fransisco found our city a convenient all night rest stop and watering hole.

The pioneer of them all was "The Bakersfield Inn" was built in 1929 and located at California and Union Avenues. This beautiful Spanish style motor hotel was the beginning of "motel row" or "Union Avenue Strip", as the area of the neon encrusted showplaces were called back then. The reason this strip of highway through Bakersfield was graced with these night spots was that Union Avenue was the only road through town in those days, it funneled all the north and south through traffic right by these businesses.

Although The Bakersfield Inn was the business communities "company party spot", weddings, club meetings, Christmas party's and scores of other local functions, it wasn't generally recognized as a "night club". This motel received many expansions due to the increase in motor traffic over the years. The last addition, in 1949, was built on the east side, across 99 Highway. To access the new wing, for guest's convenience, an arched walkway was constructed over the highway to which the big letters "Bakersfield" were attached.

Many movie stars of that era were frequent guests at the Inn. In 1953 I worked at the Standard Station adjacent to the Inn and recall a few stars, Jimmy Durante, Clark Gable, Fred MacMurray, Gary Moore and some less known celebrities would leave their car, credit card and keys with the station attendant with instructions,"give her the works", knowing the car would be serviced and ready the following day when they were leaving the motel, they always left a big tip for us employees.

The El Adobe Motel, south of the Bakersfield Inn, at Union and Terrace Way, was unique in that the Restituto family had their motel built in 1936 using adobe blocks, made on site, of clay from that property. The El Adobe was one of the first to import "not quite ready for prime time entertainers" from Hollywood to perform in the lounge. This "night club" atmosphere was enhanced, in it's early days, with lively gambling in the back room and some of the finest Italian, Mexican and domestic food in town. This hot spot ushered Bakersfield into the "night club"era. The local crowd had been given a taste of dinning, dancing, cocktails and live entertainment and they filled the place nightly.

In 1946, the next famous night spot to appear on the "Union Avenue Strip" was designed as a night club from the beginning by the Restituto family. Located on Union Avenue at Planz Road, it was named "The Crystal Inn". The bar featured a large glass fish tank in which, at unannounced times, a live "mermaid" would appear to be swimming around the aquarium smiling at the patrons, of course it was done with mirrors but it attracted spectators for years. The spacious ballroom contained a huge, beautiful, terrazo dance floor and featured top notch music and live entertainment. Some of the greats from movies of the past who appeared were The Marx Brothers, The Three Stooges and scores of musical groups breaking in new acts for Las Vegas appearances.

Special occasion's were very often celebrated at the Crystal. Anniversary's, birthdays, office party's, all were nightly affairs in the many brightly wallpapered banquet rooms throughout the Inn. The atmosphere seemed right out of a Hollywood movie as the "photo girls" visited the tables taking pictures and even making a voice recording of your party if desired. Features such as this were a real novelty to the local party crowd of the 50's.

My employer and I were fortunate to witness a performance of the celebrated fan dancer"Sally Rand" at the Chrystal Inn one night in 1956. After watching her perform the beautiful "ballet with ostrich feathers", under pale blue lighting, to the soft strains of Debussy's"Clair De lune", I could understand why she was recognized as the entertainer, viewed live on stage, by more people, than any other in America during the 20th century. My boss invited Sally to our table after her performance and to my amazement she accepted and sipped a Pepsi as she signed autographs and talked to us about her long career. Entertainment such as this is the reason the Chrystal was the class of night spots in town for many years and their seating for 500 was often reserved far in advance. Tragically the Crystal burned to the ground in 1958.

A totally new kind of night club, restaurant was opened on the 99 Strip in 1950. Named "Maison Jaussaud's", Bakersfield had never before experienced such a swanky place as this. It's French cuisine, headliner entertainment and French chateau like interior styling made a couple feel like really dressing up and spending the evening dinning and dancing at "Joso's", as it was called for short.

The all male staff of up to 60 waiters wore tuxedos which sort of coaxed patrons to "dress up" in their Sunday best when going out to Joso's for their anniversary or the Company's Christmas party. A real cultural boost for Bakersfield's usual leisurely dressed crowd. Over the years Joso's hosted many celebrities including California Governors Pat and Jerry Brown, Senators Ted Kennedy and Alan Cranston, Bob Hope and Bing Crosby, Charles Laughton and the Shaw of Iran.

The food was the best Bakersfield had ever experienced. The extensive menu included over 70 items and specialties such as "rack of lamb"prepared by real French chefs was delicious. The wine cellar was stocked with nearly 100 varieties of French and domestic wines. The restaurant and showroom could seat 1000 people and on occasions when famous personalities or orchestras were featured as entertainment, they played to a full house.

One comedian by the name of Johnny Carson had just had his Los Angeles local TV show cancelled from lack of interest and Joso's hired him at $400 per week to entertain the patrons as a stand up comedian and magician. Within a few nights patrons felt he was in the wrong business and frequent negative remarks from the audience followed by Johnny's snide responses to these remarks were material Johnny used for years thereafter on his "Tonight Show". This gem he slipped in one night at Joso's; "this must be the Dust Bowl dumping ground" and another response to a heckler,"go water your potatoes Zeke". Johnny sought revenge on Bakersfield for years drumming it as a hick town and with a nightly audience of more than 15 million viewers, most of the world began to believed it. "You have won an expense paid weekend in Bakersfield" was slipped into his monologue many times. But, in reality, he knew Bakersfield was his first step up as two agents saw his heckling act at Joso's and signed him to other acts that led finally to "The Tonight Show".

Other hot night spots sprang up in the 50's such as "Freddies On The Hill" where A great night club and restaurant were combined with a bowling alley on the hill on north Mount Vernon Avenue. It became "The" place to go in East Bakersfield to enjoy great food such as their fabulous "steak and lobster" as you listened and danced to the most romantic saxophone artist to ever play in Bakersfield, Joe De Giuli and orchestra. And also in East Bakersfield the Tam OShanter on Alta Vista Drive was considered the only night spot for hundreds of La Cresta residents.

And another hot spot, "Edison Highway Strip" was beginning to draw a huge following of people who enjoyed dancing to country western music. "The Lucky Spot" and "Clover Club" were located on Edison Highway where the world famous "Bakersfield Sound" was being born in the 50's. Some of the most talented musicians in the west played and wrote top chart songs at these two clubs and their other weekly club date was playing at "The Blackboard Cafe" on north Chester Avenue. All three of these night spots are now gone.

In the late 1950's, television began to keep the night clubbers and restaurateurs at home and as each year passed the old hot spots began to fade away due to financial difficulties. In 1963 the 99 freeway opened, bypassing Bakersfield. The flow of traffic along the old strip was cut off over night. Big motel chains moved in along the strip and even many of our beloved cafes were forced to resort to "all you can eat for a dollar" style businesses to take up the slack created by the home television revolution that featured TV dinners served on TV trays.

I still fondly recall those good times when my wife would ask; " Shall we go to Joso's or The Crystal tonight dear"?

LQ’s Performing Arts Center’s “Giving BACK to the Community” Weekend

LQ’s Performing Arts Center, a nonprofit group which dedicates itself to empowering and enriching the lives of the youth in Kern County, will place themselves in the position of giving back to the community it serves. On May 15^th- 17^th, LQ’s has scheduled a set of events to incorporate their act of GIVING BACK. All are set to be located at LQ’s Performing Arts Center (1300 19^th Street, Bakersfield, CA 93301).
On Friday, May 15^th, LQ’s Performing Arts Center will host their 1^st Ever Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony @ 10a to ignite their Grand Re-Opening. The invited guest include: Mayor Harvey Hall, Irma Carson, Sue Benham, Ken Weir, David Couch, Harold Hanson, Jacquie Sullivan, Zack Scrivner, Jon McQuiston, Don Maben, Mike Maggard, Ray Watson, Michael J. Rubio, Kevin McCarthy, Jim Costa, and other prominent members of the Kern County area. The community is invited to attend a day of celebration, recognition, raffle prizes, dance/music/poetry presentations, and fun.
Later on that day, LQ’s Performing Arts Center will host a Business Mixer, starting at 6p. Local business owners will be given the opportunity to network and socialize with other business owners, professionals, and corporate and community leaders in an upscale, business-casual, energetic, and fun environment. With a twist of hospitality, LQ’s Performing Arts Center will provide their guest with gourmet appetizers, chocolate, wine, spirits, live music and entertainment, and an opportunity to NETWORK.
On Saturday, May 16^th, LQ’s Performing Arts Center will offer a full day of fun for the Community with FREE Performing Arts Classes (Hip-Hop, Cheer, Ballet, Tap, Vocal, Gymnastics, Vocal, Acting, and Yoga), Face Painting, Magicians, Performances, and Prizes. This will give the community an opportunity to experience LQ’s; “Free of Charge.”
On Sunday, May 17^th, LQ’s Performing Arts Center will host a partial viewing of the Heart Gallery. The Heart Gallery is an exhibit of portraits displaying the foster kids of Kern County. The hope is that the viewers will be able to get information about how to adopt the featured individuals. LQ’s will open its doors for viewing at 6 p.m.

LQ’s Performing Arts Center will be honored for their Community Involvement during an Award’s Assembly

LQ’s Performing Arts Center will be awarded a plague of achievement on Friday, March 27, 2009 at Wayside Elementary (1000 Ming Ave., Bakersfield, CA 93307). The Awards’ Assembly will start at 1:30pm.

Wayside Elementary Principal, Michelle Mclean, wanted to honor LQ’s Performing Arts Center to recognize their contributions to our community.

“I feel so blessed and feel so honored that a school would recognize all the hard work and dedication that LQ’s Performing Arts Center strives to accomplish. It’s times like this, that allows me to feel as though I’m doing what the Lord has called me to do,” exclaims LaQuette Milner, Director of LQ’s Performing Arts Center.

LQ’s Performing Arts Center will perform at the Police Activities League

LQ’s Performing Arts Center will perform at the BPAL (Bakersfield Police Activities League)

LQ’s Performing Arts Center, a nonprofit group which dedicates itself to empowering and enriching the lives of the youth in Kern County, will put on a show for the students who attend the Bakersfield Police Activities League program on Friday, March 20, 2009 at 4 p.m.

It was agreed upon by LQ’s Director, LaQuette Milner, and BPAL’s Head Boxing Coach, Mike Dallas, that their two programs would continue to help each other out throughout the year.

On January 31, the pair teamed up to bring Kern County the first ever Boxing Exhibition & Dance Event. This fundraiser helped raise money to fund the campaign to “Save LQ’s for 2009”. In return, LQ’s Performing Arts Center will volunteer their time at BPAL Center to help encourage and motivate the youth to participate in the Performing Arts.

Mariachi night at the FOX

Last night my wife and I did not go to the Met., but we did enjoy the music from world class Mariachi Vargas, with vocals that were at least equal to, if not better than The Three Tenors. Mariachi Imperial and Mariachi Garibaldi were also there, and they were awesome, they exploded on stage, we will remember this night for ever. I did not know this, but Mariachi music has been incorporated into the Roman Catholic Church's most sacred ritual: the Mass. The Misa Panamericana is a Mariachi folk mass, sung in Spanish. The first Mariachi Mass was the concept of a Canadian priest, Father Juan Marco Leclerc, and has been celebrated in Cuernavaca since 1966. It originally took place in a small chapel, but news of it spread so rapidly, and the crowds grew so large, that the regular Sunday Mariachi Mass had be moved to the Cathedral of Cuernavaca. It is now frequently performed throughout Mexico, and In many areas in the United States where people of Mexican origin live. Comedy Shows start in Four Days!

Jive Honky Productions, the new comedy-based production company in Bakersfield, is hosting two stand up comedy shows next week, starting on Tuesday.

Tuesday the 17th is St. Patrick's Day, and Jive Honky Productions is kicking the night off with stand up comedy performances beginning at 7pm at The Basement Art Gallery. Those hitting the stage will be James Mongold, founder of Jive Honky Productions, in addition to Brian Ross and Russ McGaffin.

The Basement is located at 1532 19th Street, beneath what once was Capistrano's. The show is $10 admission, and FREE DRINKS will be available.

On March 19th, (just enough time to recover from your St. Patty's hangover), James Mongold is doing it again at the freshly renovated and reopened Nile Nightclub, located at 1721 19th Street. The Blacklist and it's members Michael Armendariz and Adam McCabe will be doing stand up comedy along with Mongold. Admission is only $5.

So come out and support local comedy... cheaply!
