A Movie Worth Seeing

One of the best movies I’ve seen in a long, long time is “We Bought A Zoo.” There is something for everyone. Very high quality acting, great story and good message about life. Go. See. Enjoy. Take the kids and the grandkids and the parents and the friends. It’s perfect. We need more movies like “We Bought a Zoo.”

St. Olaf Christmas Festival, Sunday, December 4

The world renowned St. Olaf Choir and its other performing choral and instrumental ensembles will present the 100^th annual St. Olaf Christmas Festival in Bakersfield at the Edwards Theater in the Marketplace on December 4, 12:30 p.m. Cost is $20.00. The Edwards joins some 360 movie theaters across the country in making this concert available via simulcast. Widely known for its world-class programs in mathematics and music, St. Olaf is also recognized for its innovative approaches to undergraduate science education. The college is located in Northfield, Minnesota.

The Christmas Festival consists of the famed St. Olaf Choir, the St. Olaf Chapel Choir, Manitou Singers (women’s choir) and the Viking Chorus (men’s choir). St. Olaf Orchestra accompaniment is provided. The entire performance consists of student musicians.

For many alumni, parents, and friends, this is a chance to see and hear the festival closer to home. The simulcast will start with a half hour preview, including a welcome from the conductors and President David R. Anderson '74.

Poetry, music event to celebrate the life's work of poet Dr. Nancy Edwards

When discussing modern poets associated with California, the names Gary Soto, William Everson, Frank Bidart and the current U.S. Poet Laureate Philip Levine come easily to mind. But a very bright light in the world of California poetry also deserves acclaim: that is, retired Bakersfield College English teacher Nancy Edwards, whose lyrical free verse body of work covers a wide range of human experience.

Those unfamiliar with Dr. Edwards’ poetry are in for a moving hour or two of brilliant music and poetry when they attend “The Earth Remembers” concert at 4 p.m. on Nov. 6 in the sanctuary of First Congregational Church, 5 Real Rd. The event will be a tribute not only to Edwards’ poetic genuis, but also to her 40-year friendship with composer and retired BC teacher Dr. Howard Quilling, who composed the music celebrating Edwards’ work. The program will also feature tenor John Gerhold, pianist Patrick Bender and soprano Ashten Smith.

”I have been encouraged by people such as Howard Quilling, Cal State Bakersfield professors Dr. Solomon Iyasere and Dr. Kim Flachmann, Rosa Garza of Bakersfield College, Camille Gavin and others such as Dana Martin of the Writers of Kern, Dr. Portia Choi and Ann Williams,” Edwards said in a recent interview. “My husband, James Mitchell, often gives me reason to write, as does my sister.”

Other inspirations include people, events, the visual arts, music of all kinds and events in nature.

Edwards admires classical writers but is especially drawn to the Post-modern era. “I enjoy nature poets like our great valley writer Philip Levine, then Gary Snyder and numerous exceptional poets like Jorie Graham, Galway Kinnel, Lee-Young Li, and Mary Oliver,” she said. She also enjoys a wide spectrum of poets and other writers from many backgrounds and cultures.

“I would advise aspiring poets to reach beyond their knowledge as frequently as possible by reading past and current published writers,” she said. “Find a favorite poet and read all of his or her works. Immerse yourself in poetry, then write as much as possible until your own poetic voice emerges as the real you.” She also recommends writing classes and workshops run by professionals.

“Seek feedback; be willing to make changes. Attend poetry readings and participate. Spend time revising your work and making it better and more profound than your first draft.”

Dr. Edwards has published poetry, fiction and creative non-fiction in many small literary journals, such as “Deros,” “Orpheus,” and the “California State Poetry Quarterly.” She has also done poetry readings at various colleges and galleries, including Pomona College, Cal Tech and the Astra Gallery of Santa Barbara. Most recently she has taught workshops for the Levan Center at BC and served as a volunteer along with other writers and professionals to celebrate National Poetry Month in April. Dr. Edwards received an Master’s degree in English from San Jose State and a Ph.D. in education from Claremont.

Dr. Quilling’s undergraduate work was at the University of South California, and he received a Ph.D. in music from UC-Santa Barbara. At BC he taught Music Theory and Composition for several years until accepting a position in the Learning Center, retiring in 1996. He has received many awards and commissions with performances of his original compositions in New York, Oklahoma, San Francisco and Los Angeles. He is recorded on the Vienna Modern Masters and the North/South Consonance lables.

“The Earth Remembers” is a collaboration in the form of a song cycle. According to Edwards, “Birth, rebirth and following a spiritual quest are highly significant themes in my work. Howard immediately visualized the music and selected the voice for the work.” “The Earth Remembers” has been their most performed work with recent concerts in Oklahoma and Augustana College in Illinois.

The concert is free of charge and open to the public as the second concert of the season in this year’s Fred and Beverly Dukes Memorial Concert Series at the church. The five concerts in the series are the result of an endowment left as a gift to the community from the estate of Fred and Beverly Dukes, longtime members of the church and Kern County educators and philanthropists.

Met Opera's "Live in HD" series offers "Anna Bolena" encore on Nov. 2

Metropolitan Opera’s acclaimed “Live in HD” series opened triumphantly early in October with the first of 11 productions broadcast live by satellite to over 600 cities throughout the world. The first opera of this season was Donizetti’s “Anna Bolena,” starring Russian soprano Anna Netrebko as the vibrant but ill-fated second wife of England’s notorious Henry VIII.

Bakersfield fans who missed the Oct. 15 “Live in HD” event can view “Anna Bolena” at the Edwards Theatre in the Marketplace at 6:30 p.m., Nov. 2 for an encore of Netrebko’s stellar performance. In the Donizetti version of history, Anne is the victim of her adulterous husband’s infidelity with her friend, Jane Seymour. The king falsely accuses Anne of having an affair with Lord Percy, her childhood sweetheart, so that he can marry Jane. Towards the end of the opera, Anne is driven mad by her faithless husband.

“This opera is truly one of the most outstanding productions I’ve ever seen,” said Bee Barmann, who has been an opera buff since seeing her first opera at the age of 8. Barmann, a voice and instrumental music major at Stanford, played oboe in the Bakersfield Symphony for 23 years. She and husband, Bernard, have attended most of the “Live in HD” presentations for the last several years as well as live productions in Europe, New York City and San Francisco.

“These are personal and intimate productions,” Barmann said. Her favorite opera stars include Renee Fleming, Bryn Terfel, and Deborah Voigt.

Retired German teacher Donna Long has enjoyed the variety of "Live in HD" operas, including comedies as well as tragedies. “I really like the way people interview the performers, costume designers and set makers during intermissions. I love going backstage between acts to see what’s going on,” Long said. "High school students, especially those who have studied music or theatre, would be happily surprised about how much they would enjoy these operas.”

Upcoming “Live in HD” performances at the Edwards also include Mozart’s “Don Giovanni” on Oct. 29 at 9:55 a.m. with Mariusz Kwiecien in the lead role and Tony-award winning director Michael Granage directing. On Nov. 5, Robert Lepage is presenting part three of the Ringer cycle, In Wagner’s “Siegfried.” Gary Lehman sings the title role and Deborah Voigt’s Brunnhild is his prize. The opera begins at 9 a.m. (12 p.m. ET).

On Nov. 19 at 9:55 a.m. , the Edwards will feature Philip Glass’s “Satyagraha,” with Richard Croft playing Gandhi. The “Washington Post” has called the production “a profound and beautiful work of theater.”

Renee Fleming appears next in Handel’s “Rodelinda” on Dec. 3 starting at 9:30 a.m. The next production will be Gounod’s “Faust” on Dec. 10 at 9:55 a.m. with Jonas Kaufmann in the title role and Rene Pape as the devil. Tony award-winnning director Des McAnuff updates the classic story of the Faust legend to the first half of the 20th century.

Other “Live in HD” productions in the season are “The Enchanted Island” (Jan. 21, 9:55 a.m.), Wagner’s “Gotterdammerung” (Feb. 11, 9 a.m.), Verdi’s “Ernani” (Feb. 25, 9:30 a.m.), Massenet’s “Manon” (April 7, 9 a.m.), and Verdi’s “La Traviata” (April 14, 9:55 a.m.).

From Frank Sinatra to Lady Antebellum....

Jimmy, musician, keyboard player, vocalist, a guy I’ve known all my life. He’s my brother. A success in his own right, and in my opinion, the best keyboard player and musician in the world. The only other job he has had was working at a department store (once). It all started back when we were 6 and 7 years old… (Jimmy was 6, I was 7). Our family had a Hammond organ in the house and Jim stuck to it like glue. I wasn’t interested in playing the organ because I wanted to play trombone (Lawrence Welk Show…go figure)

Our first big gig was at Compton Jr. High School in 1968 at a Friday after-school dance. I was in 7^th grade and Jim was in 6^thgrade. That meant Jim had to ride his bicycle from Horace Mann Elementary School to Compton Jr. High just to play the piano we had ready and waiting for him. Our band consisted of Jim on piano, Teddy on drums, and me on guitar. To find out, no one could hear the piano because someone un-plugged the microphone going to the piano (kids). I covered for Jim by playing a lot of chords on the spot…I learned how to ad-lib that night. I remember Kathy saying, “Man that was the longest song…just as long as “Hey Jude” at over 7 minutes.” It was very embarrassing time to say the least.

When Jim entered high school as a freshman he joined the East Bakersfield High School Choir and immediately became a “singing superstar.” The choir teacher saw his singing talent and put him in the EB Chamber Singers group immediately. (The Chamber Singers were the elite singing group.) Jim sang 1^st tenor and could reach those high notes in a technique called “head voice.” Not falsetta or false voice, and anyone knowing what I’m talking about knows what I mean.

From his sophomore year to his senior year he sang all the vocal solos in the EB choir and Chamber Singers. Different people wanted him to play the piano for them too…in Church, at School, and in dance bands. I was envious of my younger brother.

Jim made his 1^st 45rpm vinyl record when he was 16 years old. (A 45 rpm vinyl record was having a song on one side and another song on the other side.) The song he wrote was called “Some People.” Off the record (no pun intended), Doug Daroo was the 1^st person to hear this song when he DJ’d at KAFY 55 AM Radio off of Kern Canyon Rd. We brought it in to him to see if he would play it on the radio, but it didn’t happen. I can’t remember the reason why.

As a Senior Choir President, Jim started singing and playing piano on the weekends at local nightclubs around the town of Bakersfield. Places like: “My Place (the cellar), The Brown Shingle (a converted house off of Brundage Lane I think, now torn down), and The Lost Knight (where Coco’s Rest. Is now) He could easily be identified with his thick shoulder length, sandy blonde hair that he wore parted down the middle, sitting and singing behind a huge Hammond B3 organ. He definitely looked and sounded the part of a Rock n’ Roller.

After Jim graduated from East High School in 1975, and at the age of 18, Bittersweet Band was formed and landing him a 6 night per week job at a club called the "Matchmaker.” The Matchmaker was located in the K-mart Shopping Center off of Wilson Rd back then. This gig lasted for 4.5 years and paid him about $200 per week at only 4.5 hours per night. Not bad for a teenager and in those days.

In 1979 “California,” was formed with guitar player Terry Huston and a drummer Gary Bernard. And again, that band played at the Matchmaker, and sometimes heading to Pismo Beach to a place called The Whaler’s Inn and performing there too.

In 1980, the band "Gaines, Peay (pronounced Pay) and Johnson" was formed and played steadily up until May 19, 1984 (my birthday). The Band was making $100 each member per night, 5 and 6 nights a week or $500 - $600 per week…again not bad for a local band in Bakersfield and for those times. Playing 5 and 6 nights a week made the band super-tight sounding, unlike bands today that don’t have the chance of playing that much, thus the term “Garage Band.” Jimmy Johnson on bass, Mitch Peay on drums, Jim Gaines on keys, and myself on guitar. We all took turns on vocals.

Gaines, Peay and Johnson played at the Black Angus (then located on Union Avenue and now the home of the “Saigon Mini market.”) GPJ also played at the Tam’O’Shanter where Margaret Lemucchi (owner) loved the band so much she scheduled a photo shoot in San Francisco and introduced the band to a Booking Agent. This agent sent GPJ out on the road 2 and 3 months at a time to places like Reno, Copperopolis, Marysville, Fresno, Porterville, and Fremont just to name few.

Margaret’s plan was to have the patrons of the Tam yearn for GPJ to return after being on the road for those few months. When we came home, people literally waited in a long standing line around the Tam’O’Shanter to get inside… back then. It was the”Hot Spot of the City.” I can proudly say, Gaines Peay and Johnson were the Beatles of Bakersfield back then. It was good times.

Fast Forward to the present, Jim is currently performing continually at Charlotte’s KC Steakhouse on “F” Street downtown. He has been playing 5 nights a week for 6 years at KC’s. He performs solo Tuesday through Thursday nights, Fridays and Saturdays night’s guitarist Mike Hall and drummer Bobby O’ join him in the band. Jim has accumulated over 1000 songs in his music library. From Frank Sinatra to Lady Antebellum, easy-listening to dance. Here’s to you Jim…I wish to you many more years the successful musician you are… who’s played soundly since he graduated from East Bakersfield High School in 1975. I don’t know anyone who has been as successful as you musically and locally…Oh by the way…Thanks Jim for letting me sit in last night.

Jazz concert features Sanctuary on Sept. 25 to open Dukes Concert Series season

The Sanctuary jazz group with Dr. D's Debris will open the new season of the Fred and Beverly Dukes Memorial Concert Series at First Congregational Church, 5 Real Rd. on Sept. 25 at 4 p.m. Admission is free of charge, and the public is invited.

Sanctuary and Dr. D’s Debris have performed together for more than 25 years and have been featured performers throughout California as well as being central figures in Bakersfield’s musical scene. The compositions of CSUB professor Dr. Doug Davis will be featured at their concert. The group has won top honors at the Pacific Coast Jazz Festival in Berkeley and has performed at the Fig Gig and Fresno Jazz Festival.

Dr. D’s Debris adds the third horn of Paul Perez to the frontline and performed most recently at the 25th Bakersfield Jazz Festival. The music blends mainstream jazz with a bit of “gumbo” and has an underlying connection to the poetry of John Berryman. As Brandt Reiter of "LA Weekly" states, “Davis has a real ear for the poet's shaggy rhythms and an artful, dramatic touch; his inventive settings are quite wonderful and exceedingly well-suited to Berryman's text. Bluesy, playful and malevolent, with strong overtones of Bartók and Berg, the music is jarring, creepy and slyly seductive. And the disc, I find compulsively listenable.”

“We are blessed to have some of the finest jazz players living here in Bakersfield, and it’s an honor and joy to join them in performance,” Davis said. The musicians are Davis on piano, Ken Bausano on trumpet, Mike Raney on alto saxophone, Paul Perez on tenor sax and Glen Fong on bass.

Davis entered the world of jazz piano at age 17 with saxophonist Bennie Wallace while at the University of Tennessee where he graduated summa cum laude. While completing his Ph.D. from Harvard University, his compositions began being recorded by jazz artists Larry Coryell, Chick Corea, Eddie Gomez, Dannie Richmond, and Bennie Wallace. Winner of numerous fellowships and composition prizes, Doug is presently the director of jazz and compositional studies at CSUB.

Bausano began turning heads at the age of 15 playing with Bakersfield's “Electric Oil Sump.” He studied with Bobby Shew and has performed with Ella Fitzgerald, Pete Christlieb, Lanny Morgan, and Mary Osborne. Ken completed his Masters degree in psychology at CSUB and is the leader of Chesterfield King and the Sultans of Swing, one of Bakersfield's premier jazz groups. Bausano's most recent Bakersfield Jazz Festival performances include being a trumpet soloist with the Tim Davies Big Band and Dr. D’s Debris. His compositions will also be featured at the Dukes concert.

Raney, a Bakersfield native and graduate of Cal State Northridge, studied with L.A. vibist Charlie Shoemake and has performed Victor Feldman, Lew Tabackin, Matt Cattingub, and Freddie Hubbard. Returning to Bakersfield, he joined Sanctuary and has brought his musicality and burnin’ bop to many groups in town.

Perez studied with Roy Meder and attended the L.A. Jazz Workshop, studying under Matt Cattingub, Pete Christlieb, Bill Green, and Lanny Morgan. On graduating from CSUB, he toured and recorded with the legendary Tower of Power as their featured saxophone soloist. Perez has performed on tours with Smokey Robinson and Donna Summer, and his sax is featured in movies and Showtime's “Resurrection Boulevard.” Always in demand, he has opened for performances of Larry Carlton, Lee Ritenour, and Grover Washington with Dr. D's Debris.

Fong is a graduate of Cal State Fresno and has performed with local big bands and toured with the Ice Capades Orchestra. He has played with Ed Shaughnessy, Chuck Findley, Tommy Newsome, Bennie Wallace, Dizzy Gillespie, Louie Bellson, and recent Jazz Jam guest Ingrid Jensen. His talents have supported most of the jazz musicians on the Bakersfield scene.

Drummer Cervantes presently is the principal percussionist of the Bakersfield Symphony Orchestra and an adjunct professor at CSU Bakersfield teaching percussion and percussion pedagogy. He was a founding member of the jazz group Sanctuary that twice won top honors at the Pacific Coast Jazz Festival. Ernie completed his Bachelor's degrees in both music and history and a Master's degree in Education from CSUB. He has played in a variety of ensembles in his native Bakersfield as well as with the Flagstaff Festival Orchestra.

'The Wizard of Dark Street' event at Russo's on August 7 at noon

   The Wizard of Dark Street (Egmont USA, 2011) is one of those engrossing novels that will keep youth (ages 8-12 and even older) immersed for hours in the fantasy world about a mysterious town whose gates open into New York City only a minute every midnight.
    Author Shawn Thomas Odyssey, who grew up in Bakersfield and graduated from local schools, will be signing this first published novel at Russo’s in the Marketplace on August 7 at noon. The free event will include magic, a reading, and interactive activities, including a detective game and prizes.
    Pre-teens will adore this story with its clever heroine, Oona Crate, an orphan who happens to be an apprentice to her uncle, a mediocre magician who disappears early in the book. Distrustful of magic, she takes on the role of detective in solving several mysteries accompanied by her closest friend and guide, Deacon, a talking raven.
    “I’ve been waiting to write a classic mystery novel for a long time,” Odyssey said in a recent interview. “At the same time I’d begun world-building a place called Dark Street, a mystical Victorian street that connected the Land of Faerie to old New York City. It was literally a place located between the worlds of magic and science.”
    Odyssey’s interest in Sherlock Holmes played a part in the novel’s creation. “An idea came to me about a young girl with the same propensity towards logic and reason that Holmes had, but who also happens to have extraordinary magical powers. Thus, Oona is highly conflicted from the start.”
    Other inspirations include Susanna Clarke’s book, Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrel, “in which magic is seen is something almost mundane, though not entirely commonplace,” he said.
    Of course, Odyssey also acknowledges a debt to J.K. Rowling. “She not only sparked children’s imaginations and awakened a passion for reading at an early age, but she also showed us that kids can follow complex plot lines without a problem. In fact, they eat them up like candy.”
    Odyssey began writing in his freshman and sophomore years at North High School where he penned his first novel to impress his English teacher, Eric Healy, While he was writing, he discovered that his love of telling stories from childhood never left him. His senior English teacher, Patty Brundage, was also especially supportive of his writing.
    While at North High, he also discovered theatre with teacher Larry Orr, and in 1994 he left for Santa Barbara where he found work for six years with Robert Grande-Weiss, the artistic director at the Ensemble Theatre. “I was Robert’s assistant for most of that time where I did everything from acting to set building to diving for props in the basement. We lived and breathed theatre in those days and loved it.”
    Eventually Odyssey’s musical talents took him into film scoring, which he calls “another type of story-telling.” With other composers, he helped to create music for films such as George A Romero’s Land of the Dead and Blood and Chocolate as well as television shows Without a Trace and HBO’s Deadwood. In 2008, he composed the music for the Dreamworks/Activision video game Kung Fu Panda.
    In 2009, Odyssey and his wife, choreographer Shari Brookler, moved to the Sierra foothills in northern California where he has dedicated himself to writing. “Shari is a major influence in every way,” he said. “She supports me and my work, and I am forever grateful.” Odyssey dedicated the book to Shari as well as to Barbara Brewer, his mother who lives in Bakersfield, and to Anne Leonard, his grandmother, who passed away in Bakersfield last fall.

Optimal Hospice Volunteer Karaoke Singers Sharing their Gift of Song

If you sing like Pavarotti in the shower or Lady Gaga in your car or if singing in front of an audience is number 19 on your bucket list there is something you should know. An audience is waiting for you and it doesn't include any critics like Simon Cowell. This audience is comprised of elderly residents who are excited to have someone sing to them. "They are some of the most important people on earth," says Optimal Hospice Volunteer guitarist and singer, Ron Weymouth. "They're in an environment where they can start feeling very inconsequential, but they're so the opposite. They've done everything I've done and then some." They may also be the most appreciative audience possible

You don't need the voice of Carrie Underwood to take part. The performers are everyday people who have joined with the Optimal Hospice Volunteer program to provide the gift of song for residents in skilling nursing and assisted living facilities. "It was scary at first," says Wanda Whiteside, Optimal Hospice Volunteer and founder of their karaoke singers program. "My voice would quiver, my bottom lip would quiver, … I would sweat." But the nerves didn't last long. Now you'll find Wanda singing and joking with the residents as she serenades them. She entertains them because it makes her happy to make someone else's day. Wanda is a veteran of the Optimal Hospice Volunteer program who has done everything from patient family support and companionship visits to 11th Hour support so that Optimal patients do not have to die alone. Mentoring and scheduling for the Karaoke group is just the latest in Wanda's amazing contributions to the Optimal Hospice Volunteer Program. "Sometimes I dedicate a song to one of them, like, Somewhere Over the Rainbow," shares Wanda. "There would be standing ovations. Some people get up and start dancing - I hand them a microphone so they can sing along.”

"We're there to uplift people," says Weymouth, who was once considered a terminally ill patient himself. In 2002, he was told he had approximately six months left to live. His story was even featured in a documentary about people who had a short time to live. Now, after a long battle back to wellness, he shares his time and compassion enhancing the lives of others through his music. He plays the guitar and sings I'm going to Kansas City like the professional musician he was in his mid-twenties and thirties. The crowd loves him. "When I see their eyes light up," he says, “It really makes my day… makes my life."

The Volunteer Department at Optimal Hospice Care is recruiting more members for the Optimal Hospice Volunteer Karaoke Singers Group so they are able offer these fun events to more facilities in the Kern County Area. No experience required. "We can use people who are fun-loving, not afraid to laugh at themselves, and have an open heart for the elderly or hospice patients,' says Whiteside. Even children are welcome. "The patients really respond to them."

Mrs. Schilling has always formed a very close bond with her students, teaching them not only art, but helping them and mentoring them in many of their life aspirations. She understands that college is a fundamental step in any growing teenager’s life, and she is determined to get them there.

As a student of Mrs. Schilling’s, I will be leaving her class in the fall to make my own journey to college. It is very difficult to leave Mrs. Schilling’s art studio, not only a place I have grown up in but a wonderful and kind teacher that has never given up on me. Her dedication and mentoring has helped me reach my goal of furthering my education, and one day becoming a teacher myself.

This exhibit will be open to the public from 2 pm to 5pm and welcomes all who are interested in Kathy Schilling’s Art Studio as well as purchasing a beautiful piece of art in contribution to her wonderful cause.

Kernville residents are in for a treat. On April 15 starting at 6:30 p.m., Crosby will be at Ewings on the Kern, offering a behind-the-scenes look at her latest project, The Gypsy Cowman … a Vanishing Breed.

The Emmy-nominee film producer will be talking about the cowboy documentary and the man who inspired it. Tickets to the event will include a $7.95 appetizer of choice, a copy of the film and a presentation by Crosby.

No apologies.

That’s the first thought that comes to mind when meeting Cowman Owen Badgett. He’s tough as nails, a straight shooter with little time for “political correctness” yet he’s transparent – penning what he feels – into poetry.

Cowboy poetry is a form of story telling which grew out of a tradition of extemporaneous composition created by workers on cattle drives and ranches. As in most recapitulations, details of a day’s work on the range usually include some tall tales.

Most Cowboy poets draw from their own life experiences to summarize their thoughts into poetic forms. Badgett is no exception.

Like his father before him, Badgett became a cowman herding cattle on land he didn’t own. That type of life can be harsh: Never resting your head on your own property, living on the grace or wrath of Mother Nature and physically laboring from dawn to dusk.

Yet, it’s a life Badgett has embraced and it’s one that filmmaker Linda Lou Crosby, a former Inyokern resident admired enough to spend over a decade capturing on camera.

Crosby first met Badgett on a wild horse roundup for the China Lake Naval Air Base near Ridgecrest. She was an award-winning video producer for the Navy and Badgett was working for the Bureau of Land Management.

The two struck a friendship and remained in contact after Badgett quit his job with BLM and moved back to his beloved Eastern Montana. In 1999, Crosby and her husband Hart Broesel, a professional photographer, were invited to visit Badgett – he wanted them to see the Triple N Ranch where he worked at the time. That meeting resulted in what would become a decade-long project for Crosby who decided to film a documentary on the life of “Owen Badgett.”

Crosby has an appreciation for the West and its integral part of America’s cultural heritage. The values and ethics of those working off the land, relying often on each other for survival, and the contributions that were made through hard work and sacrifice which often were not rewarded or recognized, compelled Crosby to tell this story. The undertaking also changed her as a person. The ideals she so admired and wanted to film became so much a part of her that she and her husband now live in Eastern Montana. The “Gypsy Cowman … a Vanishing Breed” debuted in Lone Pine at the Lone Pine Film Festival in 2009. The documentary is also playing and selected locations around the country and a promo of the film has already received over 1,500 hits on YouTube.

The Minner Station Post Office in Oildale was officially renamed “Buck Owens Post Office” Tuesday — the same day as the late country singer’s birthday. Several hundred people gathered in the morning to celebrate the man who made Bakersfield famous.
Under a white tent at 118 Minner Ave., Rep. Kevin McCarthy, R-Bakersfield, Owens’ sons Buddy, Mike and John, along with his nephew Mel Owens, unveiled a plaque in Owens’ honor.
“Dad would’ve been really, very proud,” said Buddy Owens before the plaque was revealed. “My dad loved Bakersfield and he loved the fact that his name was attached to it.”
Those in attendance sang “Happy Birthday” to Owens before the sheet was lifted to show the plaque.
Bakersfield Postmaster James Brouillard and McCarthy also gave speeches about Owens and his impact on the city.
“The post office is an important part of people’s lives and Buck was an important part of Bakersfield,” Brouillard said.
McCarthy commented that passing the bill to get the post office renamed for Buck Owens was a time of great partisanship in Congress.
“If we could continue with that spirit on other legislation, we would be a lot better off,” he said to laughter from the audience.
Buck Owens Post Office is about a block from Buck Owens Production Co. and the studio where Owens spent almost 20 years recording later in his career. The post office is also where he sent his sons to respond to fan mail.
“We licked a lot of stamps at the office,” Buddy said.
After revealing the plaque, the ceremony moved inside where the Owens family cut his birthday cake.
"If Buck saw the post office named after him," his nephew Mel Owens said, “He would’ve said ‘Wow, I did something right along the way to get such an honor.’”
The Owens family donated Buck Owens memorabilia to hang in the lobby. The office was also rehabbed by the United States Postal Service before the ceremony.
Those attending the ceremony remembered Owens as a giving man and an excellent entertainer.
“I would see him at Hodel’s,” said Oildale resident Alice Brown, whose children went to school with Owens’ sons. “He just seemed like a regular guy.”
Hank Decato knew Owens as a great song writer and entertainer.
“He did so much for Bakersfield and never got credit. He didn’t want the credit,” he said. “He helped so many people down on their luck and nobody knew because he kept it quiet.”

Local musician Gary Mazzola has just released a new CD

Gary Mazzola has just released “Planet”, a new CD of 16 original songs. There are songs of love, social commentary and spiritual awareness. One of the songs, “Train keeps rolling by”, is about the resiliency of Tehachapi. It references the earthquake of 1952, people who has passed on but left a mark in our lives, and the Depot and Beekay which burned down and rose up again.

The long awaited CD has some great Tehachapi musicians appearing on it. Johnny Kamplain, Jerry Mulkins, and Bumpy Worthington as well as former residence Ken Leiboff and Cameron Melville. The songs are all original by Mazzola, Joy Gray, Betty Casey Jackson and Matthew Zadroga.

Whenever I hear of the name ‘Apollo’, I think of either the famous landmark in Harlem or the heavyweight foe that Rocky must fight in III. One is a legendary theatre where one night’s ‘Amateur Night’ gave us the Jackson 5. The other was one of the best of the Rocky franchise movies, and gave us Mr. T!

But, who knew if you got the ‘L’ out of his first name (yeah… sorry, I had to), you’d come up with the legendary record-holding Olympic gold medalist, Apolo Ohno. Even more – who knew one day he’d be coming to Bakersfield on a stop from his very busy tour promoting his new book, ZERO REGRETS: Be Greater Than Yesterday.

What a coincidence – One of the events I watched at this year’s Olympics in Vancouver, was Apolo’s incredible 3 out of 4 wins. I watched, quite simply, because Apolo was competing. Prior to that, that particular event never interested me. It wasn’t until I started hearing the stories of this young man and his father, that I started paying attention. By the time he was racing against the others, I was standing and cheering - shouting at the television, “Go Ohno! Go Ohno!”

Classical guitarist featured in Nov. 21 program

Classical guitarist Roger Allen Cope has clearly dedicated his life to music. Since moving from Hendersonville, N.C. two years ago, Cope has found his niche at CSUB teaching the Guitar Ensemble Class and giving private lessons. With Jim Scully, jazz guitarist and director of Guitar Studies at CSUB, Cope has also helped launch the new Guitar Arts Concert Series.

Cope will appear as a soloist in concert with the Fred and Beverly Dukes Memorial Concert Series at 4 p.m. on Nov. 21 at First Congregational Church, 5 Real Rd. This is a free event co-sponsored by Valley Public Radio (KVPR/KPRX).

He will also be appearing as “Roger Cope and Friends” at the Metro Galleries, 19th and Eye St. on Jan. 15 as part of the Guitar Arts Series.

His "Classical Guitar Revue" program on Nov. 21 will feature diverse composers from the 16th through the 20th centuries. Pieces include Frantasie #99” by Weiss, “Two Preludes” by Bach, “Tres estudios” by Fernando Sor, and several preludes by Manuel Ponce.

Cope is especially attracted to the music of Ponce, which he describes as concise and compact. “The challenge is to show his amazing variety.”

“I dislike music that gives me fits, but never Bach,” he said. “Bach wrote everything so perfectly and beautifully.”

Cope, who grew up in Springfield, Ill. in a musical family, played several instruments in his youth but settled on the guitar at age 22 only after serving time in the Army. Living in his mother’s garage in Lakeland, Fla., he was attending community college when he when he heard a classical guitar concert by Benjamin Bunch.

“Right then it hit me like a bolt of lightning that I wanted to be a musician,” he said in a recent interview. Bunch became his guitar teacher until Cope moved to Florida State University where he graduated as a music performance major. He also has received additional instruction from Eliot Fisk and Christopher Parkening.

Cope found music “the path of least resistance,” he said, and the guitar especially attractive because of its portability.

Cope takes pride in his 35-year career as a teacher. “Teaching has taught me important lessons in how people learn things,” he said. “I’ve had quite a few exceptional guitar students. Some will even practice until their hands bleed and ask for more time.” A few of his students have also gone into teaching guitar.

As a soloist Cope has performed in many prestigious venues in North Carolina, including the Thomas Wolfe Auditorium, the Biltmore Estate., and Scat’s Jazz Club in Hendersonville. He has performed for the Asheville Symphony, the Charlotte Repertory Orchestra and the Hendersonville Symphony. His discogrpahy includes music for flute and guitar with both Lise Mann and Judi Lampert. A multi-disc solo series titled “Near the Beginning” is in progress and scheduled for release next year.

Before moving to Bakersfield, Cope was a member of the Brevard Affiliate Artist Faculty in North Carolina as director of guitar studies from 1999-2008. He also taught at Gardner-Webb University, and in 2005 was a guest artist faculty member for the New York Guitar Seminar at Mannes School of Music in New York. He has also been a National Endowment of the Arts fellow in Classical Music and Opera at Columbia University's School of Journalism.

Cope is also the editor of “Classical Voice of North Carolina (CVNC),” an online music publication featuring concert reviews, features and blogs. He also wrote “The Bachelor Guitarist,” a young musician’s guide to guitar study.

The Zombies are Coming! GEEKS -VS- ZOMBIES

The dead have risen in Bakersfield and our only salvation comes in the form of four unsuspecting, albeit well informed, geeks.

Mastermind James Kopp has co-written this fantastically hilarious and thrilling show with his pal David Rock. The two have spent the last year perfecting this comedic horror; swapping ideas, developing characters and researching every which way zombies can be depicted, avoided and killed. And now, they are zombie geniuses.

When a zombie apocalypse hits Earth, four geeky buddies are left to fend for themselves using every bit of zombie lore known to man. Only these geeks aren’t so geeky. Okay, they are, but they’re cool geeks that know their stuff, especially when it comes to the undead.

You got your comic book collector, movie buff, music genius, and video gamer. These guys have seen zombies defeated in every single movie, game, book, et cetera. So when zombies actually attack in real life, these guys know exactly what works and what doesn’t. Let me tell you, their awesome fight scenes will have you reconsidering geekdom and possibly considering conversion.

The timing could not be more perfect.

“We wanted to do a Halloween show,” says Rock. “Last year’s show at Halloween was a great show, just not the right theme.”

When Rock suggested a zombie show, Kopp took it a step further and suggested the two write an original stage script.

“I have always wanted to do a show about zombies, and we wanted this to be as real as possible with zombies as close as five feet away from the audience,” says Kopp.

Once the two got the ball rolling, they recruited another old friend, John Morrison, to direct. Morrison felt compelled to do a show about zombies, and worked out his schedule so he could fly out from Chicago for a three-week directing stint.

“This is going to be an unusual, visceral experience for audiences,” Morrison says. “This is a very different flavor of storytelling which will attract people that don’t go to the theatre that often.”

These three geeks – um, I mean, friends - are dedicated to making this one of the most unique theatrical experiences out there. Complete with gallons of fake blood, eerie light and sound cues and even weekly zombie training for the actors, it’s as if you’re right there in the thick of it with them.

But don’t be fooled, this will not resemble other zombie films.

There’s of course the classic struggle of survival, who gets eaten, who doesn’t. But with all of the twists and turns of Geeks Vs. Zombies, you’ll agree that a whole new movie needs to be made of this sure-to-be theater cult classic.

Bakersfield College Jazz Ensemble Announces Fall Concert

Bakersfield College's talented student jazz musicians will present a rousing program of classic and modern jazz music for big band on Friday, November 5 at 8 a.m. in the Bakersfield College Indoor Theater.

The Bakersfield College Jazz Ensemble Fall Concert will feature a diverse selection of classic and modern jazz music, from Duke Ellington’s Harlem Renaissance-era opus Black and Tan Fantasy, to a brand new piece arranged especially for this year’s Bakersfield College jazz ensemble by visiting artist Steuart Liebig. Liebig is an acclaimed bass guitarist and composer from Los Angeles.

Also included in the program are compositions by jazz legends Wayne Shorter, John Coltrane, Charles Mingus, Thad Jones and more.

Notable student soloists in the ensemble this year include the outstanding young trumpeter Jorge Santos, who will soon be leaving Bakersfield College to continue his music studies in Puerto Rico, as well as saxophonists Stacy Garvin and James Russell, guitarists Johnny Mendez and Jordan Aguirre, and drummer Nick Castro.

The Bakersfield College Jazz Ensemble is directed by Kris Tiner.

The Healing Power of Music

It can be considered food for the soul. It can brighten the darkest day. It can help with forming thoughts about feelings. It is music, and the power of song will be explored at a special concert event featuring the Bakersfield College Choirs, with special guests the Centennial High School Chamber Singers.

“Students are fond of saying, ‘you know what I mean,’ or ‘you know what I’m sayin’,’ when they can’t quite get their point across. My response to these students is ‘if you don’t know what you are saying, then how can I know?’,” said Dr. Ronald Kean, director of Bakersfield College choral activities. “This is true, I think, EXCEPT in music which has a direct link to those secret places in the soul that are not expressed through ‘normal’ language. If you want to be uplifted, then this is the concert for you.”

The Healing Power of Music will be presented on Friday, October 22 at 7:30 p.m. in the Bakersfield College Indoor Theater at 1800 Panorama Drive in northeast Bakersfield.

Funds raised at all choir events this year will help Bakersfield College students accept their invitation to travel to Hawaii in May 2011 to perform at University of Hawaii, St. Andrew’s Cathedral, Kawaiahoa Church (the oldest in Hawaii built in 1840) with an all-Hawaiian choir, plus choir exchanges at Punahou and Iolani Schools.

Bakersfield Honors Author Pam Muñoz Ryan With Her Own Day!

This weekend, Russo’s Books at The Marketplace will celebrate two “hometown hero” authors. Congressman Kevin McCarthy will sign his new book, “Young Guns: A New Generation of Conservative Leaders” at 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 19. The day before, the bookstore will honor an award-winning children’s author. Read on for her story.

It is not often that we get to take part in a proclamation. In this case, a “day” will be set aside to honor a local celebrity who is one of the biggest children’s and young adult authors in the nation. This national best-selling, multi-award winning and internationally recognized author will be honored by both Bakersfield Mayor Harvey Hall and Assemblywoman Jean Fuller on Saturday, Sept. 18.

Oh, and she happens to be a Bakersfield native, too – born and raised!

Author Pam Muñoz Ryan (“Esperanza Rising,” “Becoming Naomi León”) is a member of Bakersfield City School District’s Hall of Fame (having attended McKinley and Longfellow Elementary and Washington Junior High). After graduating from Bakersfield High School, she received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from San Diego State University. She currently resides in the San Diego area.

"Esperanza Rising" by Pam Muñoz Ryan has won several awards, including the Pura Belpré Award which honors Latino authors whose work best portrays, affirms, and celebrates the Latino cultural experience in a children's book.

Her 30+ books for young people range from children’s picture books to young adult novels. A two-time winner of the Willa Cather Award for Writing, her novels have garnered some of the nation’s most prestigious accolades for children’s writings. Most recently, she received the 2010 Boston Globe–Horn Book Award for her book “The Dreamer.”

Pam Muñoz Ryan has been invited to the White House on three occasions for the National Book Festival and other literary events. She is the National Education Association Author recipient of the Civil and Human Rights Award. Next month, she will travel as the American author representative to South Korea, where she and others from 26 countries will collaborate on an international book on peace for the International Board on Books for Young People.

Saturday, Sept. 18, will be proclaimed Pam Muñoz Ryan Day in Bakersfield. The celebration will take place at 2 p.m. at The Marketplace fountain, 9000 Ming Ave., with a reception to follow at Russo’s Books at The Marketplace.

In attendance will be the author’s family, “Esperanza Rising” cover artist Joe Cepeda, the College Heights Elementary Mariachi Band (who will perform), actors from The Empty Space Theatre (who will perform a play based on her children’s book “When Mirian Sang”), her cousin (and local journalist) Lisa Kimble who will speak on growing up with Pam, and Sandra Yoon, BCSD Coordinator of Library Media Services who will speak on the importance of the author’s literary efforts. Finally, Pam Muñoz Ryan herself will speak.

The event will conclude with refreshments served at Russo’s Books, where Pam will meet and greet her friends and fans, and sign copies of her books.

The event is part of a long line-up of programs being held from September to November in conjunction with National Hispanic Heritage Month and the latest One Book, One Bakersfield, One Kern community read of “Burro Genius” by California author Victor Villaseñor. While these culinary delights may seem as though they would only be found at the country’s finest four-star restaurants, they are actually right here in Bakersfield at the county’s largest community college.

Bakersfield College’s Renegade Room restaurant will open for the fall season on Wednesday, September 1, and is serving these feasts for the body and soul on Tuesday and Thursday nights, as well as Wednesday lunches.

Prepared by students in Bakersfield College’s Culinary Arts Department under the skilled tutelage of chefs Pat Coyle and Suzanne Davis, guests of the Renegade Room can enjoy fine dining cuisine at home-cooked prices.

The Renegade Room restaurant offers gourmet dinners on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 5:30 – 7 p.m. each evening, and lunches on Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday evenings feature themed buffets, while meals on Tuesdays and Wednesdays are a selection of two to three dishes. The Renegade Room will be open from September 1 through December 2 before closing for the holidays.

“Renegade Room patrons become part of the educational process,” Coyle said. “At the beginning of the year, the students appear scared and unsure. By the end of the semester, they are confident in their meal preparation and service techniques. The Renegade Room is a hands-on experience that the classroom can’t teach.”

The Bakersfield College Culinary Arts program offers associate degrees in Food Service Management and Child Nutrition Management, with certificates in Culinary Arts, Child Nutrition Management and Dietetic Services.

The menu is elegant and the experience is one that will be remembered, according to Coyle. Dinners are $10.95 per person, plus tax. Lunches start at $7.50 per person, plus tax. The Renegade Room Restaurant at Bakersfield College is located in the Family and Consumer Education (FACE) Building at Panorama Drive and Mount Vernon Avenue. Free parking is available near the restaurant. The Renegade Room is available for large parties on regular business days and takeout meals are always available. Bobby Durham Day

As Bobby Durham day was coming to a close at The Crystal Palace, you could here The Bakersfield Sound ringing through the rafters. It was an exciting evening as Bobby was presented with plaques and certificates acknowledging it 'Bobby Durham Day' by Mayor Harvey Hall, County Supervisor Jon McQuiston, and representatives from Kevin McCarthy, State Sentors Roy Ashburn and Dean Flores and Assemblyman Danny Gilmore.

Bobby sang alot of his favorites country songs and told stories about his days before traveling with Merle Haggard. He has had the opportunity of a lifetime and is content and happy with where he is now. Bobby was surrounded by family and friends and when it was time to go, he sat by the front door and signed autographs for his endearing fans.

Afternoon concert features Beethoven, Brahms on Sept. 19

“An Afternoon of Chamber Music” on Sept.19 at 4 p.m. features Beethoven’s “Clarinet Trio in B-flat Major, Opus 11” as the first concert of this season’s Fred and Beverly Dukes Memorial Concert Series at First Congregational Church/UCC, 5 Real Rd. This is the fifth season of the Dukes Sunday afternoon concerts, which are free and open to the public in the church sanctuary.

The Beethoven clarinet trio is a rarely performed early work, according to pianist Elizabeth Cervantes. Playing in the trio will be Cervantes, clarinetist Mary Moore and cellist Karen Blockley.

The popular Brahms’ “Horn Trio in E-flat Major, Opus 40” is the second piece for piano, horn and violin. “This is one of the most loved pieces in the chamber music repertoire,” Cervantes said. “It is almost like a symphony for chamber music with a variety of moods from depression to the pinnacle of excitement.” The trio includes Elisha Wilson on horn and Matt Mazzei on violin.

Cervantes, who grew up in London and has played piano most of her life, teaches piano locally and teaches part-time at Bakersfield College. Currently she is completing her Master’s degree in piano performance at Fresno State University.

On Nov. 21 the series will feature classical guitarist Roger Allen Cope, who recently joined the CSUB music faculty as instructor of guitar and the Guitar Ensemble in partnership with composer and jazz guitarist Jim Scully.

From 1999 to 2008, Cope was a member of the Brevard Affiliate Artist Faculty in North Carolina. He has an extensive background in performance and recording.

Cellist Deiter Wulfhorst and violinist Susan Doering are returning on Jan. 30 to the Dukes series after their Bakersfield debut last September. Both teach music a Fresno State University and teach and perform regularly at many venues in the U.S. and elsewhere.

A group from the Bakersfield Winds will be in concert Feb. 13, followed by the Chao-Mehling Due Plus Cello with retired CSUB music professor Dr .Gordon Mehling on violin, University of Houston pianist Dr. Rachel Chao on piano and Martinez, Calif. teacher Judy Rummelsburg McCall on cello on March 6.

Long time local educators Fred and Beverly Dukes left an endowment to the church to provide an annual concert series as a gift to the community. The series is co-sponsored by Valley Public Radio KVPR/KPRX (FM 89.1).

Karaoke singers across the county are gearing up for the 4rd Annual Road to the Fair Karaoke Contest, where ultimately $40,000 in cash and prizes will be distributed.

This film is so good I know we'll film the other three episodes. We are going to make a feature film.

What has helped in making this film was to have passion and tell the story.

You have to use sight, hearing, and imagery... we use all we could do to make you visualize the action.

It was fun making this film.

Oh yes, we filmed it on location in sub 13 degree temperatures, and it was a challenge.

Garden Pathways to Honor Local Women at "High Tea"

Garden Pathways will honor four outstanding "Women with a Heart for Bakersfield" at the eighth annual High Tea on Wednesday, June 9, 11:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m. (11:00 a.m. social) at Seven Oaks Country Club.

Honorees Kim Albers, Cathy Butler, Susan Hersberger, and Dayna Nichols have a proven record of exceptional community service and leadership that has made a positive and lasting impact in Bakersfield.

Mayor Harvey Hall and other dignitaries will present awards and resolutions to these women who inspire, mentor, and empower others to serve their community.

Proceeds from the event will provide mentoring and education services for youth and families who are seeking to overcome the challenges of poverty and at-risk conditions and are moving towards educational advancement and self-sufficiency. Participants served include youth and families impacted by gang violence, families transitioning from welfare-to-work and child protective services programs, emancipating and emancipated foster youth, pregnant and parenting youth, and other at-risk youth.

Attendees will hear how the power of mentoring has transformed lives from the inside out through hope and relationship.

The four honorees have shaped the life of the Bakersfield community and have served as mentors to many.

Kim Albers, co-founder and director of Flood Bakersfield Ministries, leads diverse initiatives to battle homelessness through long-term relationships that meet the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of the deeply impoverished. Alber’s passion for the hurting has mobilized hundreds of volunteers for weekly Saturday night outreaches that serve 300-400 guests, a 12-block graffiti wash program, and an emergency assistance program to prevent homelessness. Albers is vice chair of the Kern County Homeless Collaborative and co-chair of community outreach for the 10-Year Plan to End Chronic Homelessness.

For over 35 years, Cathy Butler has been an advocate and driving force in the development of downtown Bakersfield, serving as secretary, office manager, and now, president of the Downtown Business Association. Butler’s relentless efforts have improved the quality of life in the heart of Bakersfield  with the emerging arts district, the Downtown Street Faires, the Mill Creek project, and the restoration of the Fox Theater and the Padre Hotel. Butler, dubbed “Queen of the Fox,” led the successful “Save the Fox” campaign. As president of the Arts Council of Kern, Butler continues to advance the arts.

Susan Hersberger, public affairs director of Aera Energy, enriches Kern County through sustained engagement and leadership in a broad spectrum of civic affairs. With a history of copious community involvement, Hersberger currently serves on the leadership team of Greater Bakersfield Vision 2020, as a director of the Bakersfield Museum of Art and the Bakersfield Symphony Orchestra, and on the executive advisory council of CSUB School of Business and Public Administration. She is an active member of the Rotary Club of Bakersfield.

As owner and CEO of Castle Print & Publication, Dayna Nichols has established a company culture of giving back to family and community. For nineteen years, Nichols has served on the executive board of Options Unlimited Bakersfield Women’s Business Conference and the Bakersfield City School District Education Foundation. She chairs Kern County Family Week, serves as director at large of the Bakersfield Chamber of Commerce, is active on the Women’s & Girls Fund Vision Committee, and assists many nonprofits.

Freedom-themed Photography Night May 28th

Imagine an event experience that is more like a conversation than observation, more interactive than informational. An event which invites you to be actively involved and get more from the experience.

The purpose of Mile 124 coffee house nights is to be "a catalyst for expression & reflection pointing to God." It has been called a mix between a concert and an art gallery. There is live music, coffee, treats, free childcare & wifi, and plenty of creative projects for you to relax.

The next event, coming up on May 28th from 7-10 p.m., is a freedom-themed photography night. It is headlined musically by Bryan Easter along with Deedra Patrick and Right Hand Side. Each hour will feature freedom-themed photography submitted from photographers ranging from amateurs to professionals.

Each photographer will approach freedom from their perspective which will give varying definitions. There might be examples of being free from burdens and responsibilities; freedom meaning nothing holding you back; freedom being a descriptor for what their faith allows; or perhaps freedom is something to be fought for.

It’s just another night of annoying not so sober customers for a hapless bartender who must continuously deal with all kinds of down-and-out boozers. Tonight, however, it’s even more annoying when a drunk and out-of-work former DJ goes into the bar reminiscing about his glory days. Could it get any worse?

Eventually, the former DJ ends up face to face with a mysterious jukebox that plays music that is just a little too close to his heart… and… is… it… talking to him? Is the jukebox alive?

This theatrical production is the first of its kind in Bakersfield! Why, you ask? Hasn’t there been other popular music revues here before? Yes, but, not like this. You see, the jukebox theme is real! You, the audience member, will decide the course of the show! Kern County Child Abusr Prevention Fundraiser at the Gaslight Melodrama

The Gaslight Melodrama will be holding a fundraiser to benefit the Kern County Child Abuse Prevention Council for their premiere of The Mobfather. A Musical on Thursday, May 27th Tickets are $25.00 and all sales from tickets will be donated to KCCP.

Child abuse is one of the most serious problems facing families today. KCCP worksclosely with both parents and children who are recovering from the aftermath of child abuse, neglect and domestic violence. KCCP also works to prevent child abuse and neglect from occurring in the first place or from happening again. Through a combination of parenting education, family counseling, case management and guided visitation or parent coaching KCCP sees families get better and do better every day. Playwrights Sought for Submissions

With the deadline just a month away, Tehachapi Community Theatre has begun to receive submissions for 2010 Playwrights Festival, which features 10-minute plays gathered from Kern and Los Angeles Counties.Winners will receive productions at the BeeKay Theatre, Tehachapi, this fall.

Submissions must be received by June 15, 2010. Judges from Kern and LA counties will score the entries, untimately selecting at least 6 for production. Last year's event received 46 submissions, of which eight were produced.

During the Festival the plays will receive 3 public performances, audiences will vote for their favorite scripts, and results and awards will be revealed after the final performance.

Tehachapi Community Theatre 2nd Annual Playwrights Festival

Tehachapi Community Theatre is pleased to announce the 2^nd Annual 10 Minute Playwrights Festival. We hope this year will be bigger and better than last year.

If you are interested in submitting a play, please read the attached rules, fill out a submission form, and good luck!

THE RULES

1. Any resident of Los Angeles or Kern Counties is eligible to submit a script.

2. You may submit one (1) 10-minute play. Submissions must be unproduced. For the purposes of this event, a play will be deemed to have been produced if it has had one or more performances at which admission was charged, and the actors were off-book; this applies whether or not the author received royalties, and regardless of the quality of the production values. The sole exception is if the show was presented as a one-performance fund-raiser in which all creative personnel donated their services.

3. Your submission must be accompanied by a completed submission form.

4. Plays should not exceed 10 minutes in running time; please verify this by reading your play aloud before submitting. Any play which, in the opinion of the judges, will substantially exceed 10 minutes will be disqualified. Since scripts will be judged anonymously, the title page should bear the name of the play only; the author’s name must not appear anywhere on the script. Author information will be collected on the required submission form.

5. Submissions should be e-mailed to playwrights@TCTonstage.com. Submission must be received no later than June 15, 2010. TCT is not responsible for late, undelivered, or misdirected submissions. Play submission must be in PDF, Word Document or Open Office format. All other formats will be rejected. Diary of Anne Frank Opens at the Empty Space Theatre

No person has made a bigger difference in the documentation of life under the Nazi regime as Anne Frank. Her diary gave us insight that has become a part of school curriculum as required reading.

Her diary was released to the world through her father and was turned into a play that has been performed all over the world. This Friday, it comes to The Empty Space Theatre in Bakersfield. I asked Bob Kempf, the director of this production, a series of questions:

Why did you decide to direct this play? What does it mean to you?

“The Diary of Anne Frank is a play that needs to be seen by every generation. It is unequaled as an inspirational true story of hope and light in a time of great darkness and evil. I often describe The Diary of Anne Frank as 'just one story out of six million' and that perspective, while sometimes overwhelming, is very important to the way we have approached this project -- with respect, sincerity, and enthusiasm.

“We are performing the recent Broadway version, which is a new adaptation by acclaimed writer Wendy Kesselman of the 1959 original by Goodrich and Hackett. Kesselman includes new material from the unedited version of the diary. This fresh take on the play will give the audience a deeper story and fuller, more complex characters.

“The Diary of Anne Frank, even after all these years, is full of drama, humor, suspense, and even romance. To me, the play helps us to remember the horrors of our past but also speaks to the resiliency of the human spirit even in the worst of circumstances.”

The diary has become such an important part of today's school curriculum. Why do you think that is?

“The book stands out because is a significant historical document and is also an incredibly entertaining read. Anne was a talented writer and she knew how to tell a story well. Her diary has appeal to all ages.”

Did you do anything special to help the actors prepare for this play?

“As much as I would’ve loved to fly the entire cast to Amsterdam to visit the Anne Frank House, we were more than content to watch a remarkable documentary, Anne Frank Remembered, which won the Academy Award several years ago. It is an incredibly moving film, full of reminiscences from Anne’s childhood friends, and from Miep Gies, one of the family’s helpers while they were in hiding. I would strongly recommend it to anyone wanting the full story of Anne Frank.”

The Empty Space is a 3/4 black box arena (the only one of its kind in Bakersfield), is there a reason you wanted to bring it to this venue?

“Putting the audience on three sides of the Frank’s attic hiding place will put them right on top of the action, and get them more involved in the story. It can only help add to the feeling of living in cramped quarters!”

The actors in this production are not new to Bakersfield theatre, though some have never performed at The Empty Space before. Still, the draw to delve into the character of Anne Frank and others involved were too much to resist. I asked a couple of the actors some questions, too.

I asked both actors what this part meant to them, how did they prepare for the role and what, if anything, did they get out of portraying their characters?

“I feel a tad intimidated to be portraying such a famous person, not just because she was such a strong character, but because she is so well-loved around the world. But it’s still an inspiration that makes me want to do my absolute best in this role.

“Playing this part is a great and honorable opportunity. It means a lot to help keep her memory alive. Audiences should see this play because it gives an amazing glimpse of what it was like for so many people during World War II. The Diary of Anne Frank would be a great learning and entertaining experience for audiences. I prepared for this role by reading up on her and seeing how other people described her.

“From being part of this production I have learned about commitment and understanding.”

“It feels good to be playing such an amazing man and doing a small part in keeping his memory alive. Theatre is a great way of telling the human story, so I want to do my best to do right by the play and the story it tells. Audiences should see this production because it’s a great play about amazing people.

“Anne’s diary and the story it tells speaks for all people past, present, and in the future who suffer from the inhumanity of hate, prejudice, and evil. Being part of this production reinforces my love of the theatre, and my love and respect for the play’s characters who suffered such unimaginable pain with such dignity and humanity.”

I asked Bob for some final comments/thoughts:

“Just this past January, the last surviving person involved in this story, Miep Geis, passed away at age 100. Our production is dedicated to her memory. Our final performance on Sunday April 11 at 2pm is a fund-raiser for the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.”

The Diary of Anne Frank runs from March 26th through Aprill 11th. Admission is free with a donation request of $15 for adults and $10 for students and senior citizens. Smash Lab’s Maverick Engineer to Speak at Bakersfield College

Bakersfield College will host maverick engineer and star of the Discovery Channel’s hit TV show Smash Lab, Deanne Bell, on Tuesday, March 23 from noon to 1 p.m. as part of a special series of speakers sponsored by the College’s Science Technology Engineering Mathematics (STEM) program. Bell will make her presentation in the Bakersfield College Fireside Room, located in the John Collins Campus Center, at noon. STEM is working to bring a series of speakers with extensive experience in the technical fields of study that students are pursuing. The event is open to the public and admission is free.

Bell is known for taking everyday technology and applying it in revolutionary new ways on Smash Lab.

Deanne Bell aims to find out!

Bell earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from Washington University in St. Louis in 2002. As an opto-mechanical design engineer in the aerospace industry, she designed a FLIR (Forward Looking Infrared) system and a LADAR optical navigation system with Raytheon. She worked on product development with SpaceClaim, a 3D mechanical CAD startup. She hosted PBS’ Design Squad before becoming a scientist on Discovery’s Smash Lab…a program focused on “destruction instruction” to perform experiments on existing technology for a better world.

More than just a scientific innovator, Bell is also a world adventure traveler who has hiked to the base of Mt. Everest, and was a NCAA Div III soccer finalist.

STEM at Bakersfield College focuses on the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Efforts surround encouraging underrepresented student populations to pursue higher education in one of the fields.

Ray Friesen is a nice guy.

There are worse things that could be said about a person. (I should know, I’ve had them all hailed at me!) But, to be called a nice guy. Man… that hurts! You know the old saying, “nice guys finish last”. Or when the girl you’ve been pursuing says, “I like you, you’re nice… but”. Yup, there’s always the big “but”.

Well, in this case, this nice guy finishes first!

Young Mr. Friesen has been a published author since he was 13 years old. He started his own publishing company (Don’t Eat Any Bugs Publishing) and began marketing his wares to bookstores all over the state of California. I met him when he was 14. He was an old pro by then, and I hosted him and his cast of zany characters for many a book signing. He always delivered. He would show up, pen in hand, and proceed to sign anything you wanted signed. He would even sign things you didn’t want signed!

Now Ray has gone big time! He has inked a deal with Top Shelf Productions, a publishing company that specializes in comic styled publications, for a three book series based on his penguin character! That’s great news for Ray, and for those of us who have been in his corner from the beginning! Of course, he agreed to visit Russo’s Books in The Marketplace and offer a free cartooning workshop before he went big time, so he has to honor it! (Just kidding! He’s always been willing to work with kids who are interested in learning the art of cartooning!)

For the next three months Ray will be offering a cartoon workshop on the first Saturday of the month (that means March 6^th, April 3^rd and May 1^st) from 11:00 AM to 12:00 Noon. We encourage you to bring your kids to this very family oriented engagement! If they even show a hint of interest in drawing or writing, then this is the venue for your kids! Best of all, it’s free!

When I asked Ray about his new deal with Top Shelf, he had this to say about himself. And yes folks, he speaks about himself in the very strange “Third Person” type format! Hmmm… here goes:

Olympic Torches on Display at Bakersfield College

The Olympic Flame or Olympic Torch is a symbol of the Olympic Games. Commemorating the theft of fire from the Greek god Zeus by Prometheus, its origins lie in ancient Greece, where a fire was kept burning throughout the celebration of the ancient Olympics. Carrying the Olympic flame in preparation for the Summer or Winter Games is truly an honor – one which was bestowed on two Bakersfield College staff members.

Dr. Chuck Wall, retired communication faculty, carried the torch in a relay leg in preparation for the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City.

Ray Maranda, retired staff member, carried the torch in a relay leg in preparation for the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.

The torches carried by both Wall and Maranda will be on display in the Bakersfield College Grace Van Dyke Bird Library foyer beginning Wednesday, February 24. The community is invited to come observe the torches.

Women’s History Month Honored at Bakersfield College

In March, 2000, then-United States President Bill Clinton declared March to be national Women’s History Month in recognition of the “extraordinary achievements of women throughout our history, while recognizing the equally significant obstacles they had to overcome along the road to success.”

Since President Clinton’s declaration, Bakersfield College has participated in the countrywide effort to recognize the historical accomplishments of women with a month-long series of programs that are presented by local and regional leaders among women. Women’s History Month and More at Bakersfield College organizes an array of programs which are open and free to the public. This year’s theme is Women and the Arts.

“For so many centuries, women’s history has been unknown, unwritten and not talked about,” said Erin Miller, professor of history at Bakersfield College and member the planning committee. “Women have played a big role in every facet of life, including technology, the arts and leadership. If we get one person in the audience to say, ‘I didn’t know that,’ then we’ve achieved our goal.”

I love a good romantic comedy. I can think of a few stage and film titles that pull at the heart strings successes, and several that simply fail. Movies give you those practiced and polished, fourteen takes, make-no- mistake-about-it performances. Live theatre brings you the raw, “what mood is the actor in”, live audience promise of a different show every night.

The live, onstage production is different – and if you have to see a romantic comedy (and what better time than Valentine’s Day?), then this is the venue for which to experience it.

On stage - every moment is pertinent to the play; the characters and the lines they deliver are there for a reason. Because of that, you tend to listen a little more carefully. You, the audience member, tend to get lost in what is being delivered to you… and if it’s done well, you get to feel the highs and lows that the characters are going through. First Kisses is one of those plays.

First Kisses, a play written in 2005 by Jay D. Hanagan, explores the life-long relationship between John and Mary. They were born on the same day and grew up in the same town. They experienced their “first kiss” at the innocent age of 11, with the story following their lives well into their 70’s.

Directed by Julie Jordan-Scott, who says the play is dear to her because it’s about love across the life span (that) gives her a chance to create a living Valentine greeting for the town she calls home. “Weaving this production together and presenting it to the people of Bakersfield is like a big ‘Thank You!’ + Love Fest + Celebration of Love and Life all in one” Julie continues, “I am a hopeless, and hopeful, romantic. I fell in love with this piece when I saw the combination of romance and realism. The script doesn’t pull any punches; it isn’t saccharin, it is true”.

Justin Roney, who plays 14 year old John, says “When I was growing up, I had a secret place where I would meet my best friend, a girl who lived in the neighborhood. I love that 'First Kisses' includes a secret place where best friends visit over and over like I visited my friend. I can't wait for her to see the show."

Dawn Tyack, who plays 43 year old Mary, adds, “Seeing the show unfold has been so surprising. I didn't realize how rich it would be to see so many actors portraying the same two people over their lives... but it really, really works."

The show stars eighteen different actors portraying the couple at eight different stages in their lives, with two of the actors, Angela Hanawalt and Josh Evans, constantly on stage, guiding you through the play as they, John and Mary, narrate their own lives for you. From the youthful 11 year-olds (portrayed innocently by Andres Sanchez-Robinson and Emma Jordan-Scott), onto the twenty-one year-olds narrowly escaping a wrongful marriage (drunkenly portrayed by Eric Bracamante, and the sober Jessica Delcid), through to the retired seventy year-olds recuperating from a heart attack that almost ends one of their lives (lovingly portrayed by Ed Hughes and Joy Wheat). During their life span we’ve witnessed the innocence of young love, a moment of confusion when John almost marries another, and later through the pains of an almost affair.

The setting at The Empty Space Theatre is intimate and beautiful. From the incredible “shack” that John and Mary meet at throughout the years, beautifully designed and built by Cameron Brian, to the garden and “hamster graveyard” that brings them joy and pain. The scenery is almost as delightful as the actors’ portrayals of the two characters.

The show also stars Simone Wheat, Rickey Vierra, Katherine Scott, Jared Cantrell, Michelle Guerrero Tolley, Andy Tyack, Thomas G. Robinson and Jenny Babcock. Costume were designed by Alison Martin. Sound design by Craig Cook. James Hernandez is the Stage Manager and Natily Ray is the Board of Directors Liason.

First Kisses opened Friday, February 12^th at 8:00 PM at The Empty Space Theatre, with other performances scheduled for Saturday, the 13^th and a matinee on Sunday, the 14^th at 2:00 PM. Future dates include February 19^th, 20^th, 26^th and closing on Saturday, February 27^th, all starting at 8:00 PM.

Levan Institute Opens Classes for Spring Semester

Gone are the days of riding into the sunset of retirement. Today’s retiree is looking for ways to enrich their life, and Bakersfield College is presenting a new educational opportunity for residents 55 and better.

Through the 2006 $5.7 million gift from local dermatologist Dr. Norman Levan, Bakersfield College is announcing the Levan Institute for Lifelong Learning, which opens for its second semester in late January. The purpose of the Institute is to make interesting and useful learning experiences available primarily to those 55 and better who are interested in continuing to gain knowledge throughout their lives.

“The Levan team continues to work hard to bring a series of courses which are interesting, insightful and relevant to our community,” said chair Dr. Robert Allison. “Each session will introduce new courses and courses which are applicable to what is currently happening in our society.”

Course topics include gardening and plant care, soapmaking, silversmithing, drawing, photography, music, personal finance, astronomy, wine appreciation and many more. A full schedule of courses is available in the Spring 2010 Catalog and Schedule, which can be requested by calling 395-4431 or checking online at bakersfieldcollege.edu/levaninstitute.

While the courses offered by the Institute are primarily designed to address the interests of seniors, they are open to all adults. Courses vary in length and subject, and with just two exceptions, are outside the “credit” sphere of the college.

“We have tried to provide a curriculum that will appeals to the wide spectrum of interests of those living in our community,” said committee member Ned Gilfillan. “We hope that we have succeeded in providing a range of topics that will interest many people.”

Jukebox Legends is a new original show conceived by Roger Mathey and Thomas G. Robinson for The Empty Space Theatre, featuring the legends of the jukebox era from 1940's to the early 2000's.

It's also a variety show with funny original skits inserted in-between the songs, with entertainment dating back to the Johnny Carson, Ed Sullivan and Steve Allen days to the Conan/Leno debacle.

Directed by Thomas G. Robinson, the show promises laughs, music and entertainment!
