After scoring last minute tickets from Representative McCarthy (thanks, Vince!), we almost did not make it on the National Mall to watch the swearing in (although we did stand in line next to Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson for awhile...they were in line just like everyone else!). While the metro was run wonderfully, sadly whoever organized the tickets failed miserably in anticipating crowd size and how long it would take to get people inside the gates. After some clever maneuvering, we managed to find some great space on the National Mall in front of the American Indian Museum. It was such an incredible feeling standing amongst the millions who had traveled thousands of miles to be together in this historical moment.

I cannot wait to see all the changes President Obama will bring forth.

South Korean F-15K Fighter Spotted over Palmdale

I was out photographing airplanes on Thursday afternoon, and it was a little bit busier than usual, with a C-40, C-130, and C-17 in the pattern. Next up was an approaching F-15 Eagle, which you don't see out here very often, even the F-15s from Edwards are a rare sight. However this particular 'Eagle', as they are known, was not your average F-15. This turned out to be a South Korean 'K' model F-15, also known as a 'Slam Eagle'. It was carrying three drop tanks, which makes me believe this was probably a delivery flight from the Boeing factory to the South Korean Air Force. Surprisingly, the airplane was also carrying a 'sniper pod', which allows aircrews to identify targets, and they are also used for battle damage assessment after the fight. This is a fairly new piece of equipment, so I was taken aback to see it on a foreign aircraft. A U-2 spyplane came in shortly after the F-15.
