Slick is an 8 month old Dachshund/Chihuahua mix. Slick currently weighs 9.6 pounds and is just about full grown. Slick came into the shelter after roaming the streets for many days. He is a very sweet, excited and loving little boy that is looking for a second chance. Slick likes to play with other dogs and feels more comfortable when they are around. Maggie is a three month old Labrador /Pit Bull mix. She currently weighs 16 pounds and is expected to mature into a 50+ pound girl. Maggie and her sister were cruelly tied up to a shopping cart at a local market. In very cold temperatures the girls cuddled together until they were rescued by animal control. Very thankful and excited for a full meal and a warm blanket, Maggie and her sister made themselves at home and immediately showed their silly personality. Maggie is very playful and loves to play with her sister and other dogs. She loves toys, and enjoys chewing on raw hides. Maggie does not know how to walk on a leash yet but comes right away when she is called. She loves everyone and crawls right in your lap, covering you with kisses. Cheeky is an 8 month old Chihuahua mix. She was surrendered by her owners after they were no longer able to care for her. Cheeky currently weighs 3 pounds and is on the thin side. She should mature into a 5-8 pound girl. Little Cheeky is a little nervous and scared around new people when she first meets them. She warms up very quickly and likes to be held, cuddled and comforted. Cheeky is not familiar with a leash and needs some practice. She likes to be around other dogs and feels safer when they are around. Cheeky is very submissive and also shy around other dogs and will do best with dogs her size or that are submissive as well. A Plea for Help

Please forgive me if this is a duplicate posting. About 2 months ago I found a cat trying desperately to get into the resident's apartments, he followed everyone, just a lost soul.
This is not a stray or wild cat it is an abandoned cat. I live in an apt complex that does not allow pets but I have been feeding it and made it a makeshift bed for outside to keep it from freezing, I have tried all the animal organizations here but they haven't enough funds to take him and I won't go to spca as they will kill him.
He is a handsome, short-haired male mostly black with pretty white markings. He has large clear green eyes and appears very healthy esp since I have been feeding him.
I guesstamate he is around 6 months old. He loves to lay on your lap and be pet.
I'm afraid I will be evicted if I'm caught taking care of him. I have tried friends but no is able to take him. Can someone please give this handsome and loving cat a home?
I call him Babe but he seems to answer to anything!

This little flame point kitty is ready for some loving arms!

Tink is a 10 month old flame point kitten. This poor little girl was pulled out of a tree after crying for help. She was so grateful for being saved she immediately began to purr in the arms of her rescuers. Her left eye is a little smaller than her right and possibly had an injury but she sees out of it just fine. She is the most affectionate and loving little kitty you will meet. Tink loves to smooze and purr all day long, and she will take the attention from anyone she can get to. She likes to play, after she is done relaxing of course, and doesn’t mind other cats. Kitty Needs A Home!

This beautiful girl is named Kitty and she is in need of a loving forever home today! Kitty is approximately four years old and weighs almost 8 pounds. Come meet Patches, the lucky boy who was left for dead.

Patches is a one year old Cairn Terrier mix. He is full grown and weighs 19 pounds. Poor Patches was rescued after being tied up, and left in the middle of an orchard. This poor guy was covered in tangled twigs, weeds, foxtails, dirt clods, etc. He is also suffering from a mild ear infection that is getting better day by day. After all Patches has been through he still managed to let us give him a quick clip (hence the patches), and was so thankful and excited to be free of all the debris.
Patches is an extremely loving and affectionate boy. He is not too interested in toys, unless other dogs are playing with them, and he would much rather be snuggling up in your lap. Patches loves to give kisses and gets very excited when he gets all the attention. He is afraid of cats and does very well around other dogs. Update on Campus Park's Pond or Sump

The residential area of Campus Park, near White Ln. and Gosford is one of the lucky communities that has been blessed with a sump that was turned into a pond back in the 80's soon after the community was established. So far no one has been able to tell me just where the turtles, ducks, and geese have come from, but a recent visit from a biologist has determined that these animals are not native to our lands. The fifteen turtles probably started out as someones pet who was either released into the sump-pond, or wondered away from their yard and made it's way to the pond. Now, after 20+ yrs. the little turtle has a very nice home and family. They are most likely within the species identified as painted turtles. The ducks and geese are migratory birds, and if they weren't being fed by humans, would actually fly away each year.

Sumps are created throughout Bakersfield in order to collect storm waters and prevent flooding, but also for use of the waters. As a lot of us here in Bakersfield experienced during the December severe storms, not all of the measures put into place work perfectly. The sump-pond located in Campus Park South is always sort of full which helps it to function better as a pond. This has been where the blame has been placed for the flooding that occurred surrounding Sing Lump Elementary, and the neighboring area. Certain departments within the city don't exactly agree. Water Resources Dept. is who maintains the sumps, while an unidentified department takes care of the water level within the sump, and another dept. takes care of keeping the storm drains clear. If the sump had not been a pond at the time of the floods, it could have taken in more water....obviously, but when all of the storm drains surrounding the area were crammed full of debris from the storm, what good is a sump? The streets are not angled so the water will run down each street and into the sump. That's why the storm drains are there. As residence of the area witnessing the flooding, it looked to several individuals like a flaw in the design of the roads when the area was built. Several of the streets that had the worse flooding, had no storm drains available to them.

The December flooding has brought about a big controversy about turning the pond at Campus Park South, back into a full functioning sump, and removing the wildlife. Enthusiastic residents of the area have posted signs asking for support. Aiming residents to contact the Director of Water Resources, Jason Meadors to voice our disapproval of the departments actions. I for one, being a long time resident of Campus Park, wild life enthusiast, and having watched the geese and ducks raise their babies here year after year, was ready for a fight. Especially after having read the article that made Mr. Meadors sound like such a Neanderthal.

To my great surprise, not only did Jason Meadors answer his office phone in order to take my call on his lunch break, but he was just as concerned about the situation as I and all the Campus Park residence were. He had taken over the position of Director of Water Resources in January, after all of the havoc in December occured. He has been doing a lot of catch up, but by the time I called him on Thursday, May 5th, he had already had a biologist, several engineers, and surveyors to the pond-sump, figuring out the best way to maintain the sumps purpose and not disturb the wildlife. He had also been in contact with the Ca. Dept. of Fish and Game, who informed him that the birds are protected under the Migratory Bird Act.. Meaning they are to remain untouched until they have finished their nesting period which would be about mid Sept. through Jan.. On a followup call to Fish and Game, I found out that in order for any city or county department to relocate the wildlife in order to turn the pond back into a full time sump, an application would have to be submitted because of the California Enviormental Quality Act, which would put the whole thing in the hands of Fish and Game, who would then have their biologist survey the pond to make sure there were no endangered or protected species living there. If all was clear, they would professionally remove and relocate the animals.

Director Meadors has reassured me that it is not the intention of the Dept. of Water Resources to relocate the animals, nor disturb them. He is even having a crew lined up to go back out to the pond to clean up the debris that was scrapped from the bottom of the pond and layed around the sides, while work was recently being done to the sump. Our City Councilman, Harold Hanson has also been in contact with Director Meadors to make sure all works out for the animals and the concerned citizens who have been contacting both his office and the Water Resources office.

Here's to city politics! It does sometimes go in the direction of the citizens, when we come together and voice our concerns. Thank you to the concerned residence of Campus Park who so diligently posted the signs for help for all to see.

Tommy came to the shelter after he was found on the streets by a Good Samaritan and now he is waiting to find his new forever home! He is a neutered male, black Terrier mix. Tommy is approximately a year old and weighs 18 pounds, so he is probably not going to get much larger. He loves to play, is very friendly and he seems to do well with other similar sized dogs. Morris is a 9-10 year old Dachshund. He is full grown and weighs about 15 pounds. This senior boy is still a very playful and active puppy and has a lot of love to share. He really enjoys going for walks and crawling into your lap. Morris always wants attention and tries to give you kisses and smooze up to you. He is possibly potty trained and has not had an accident inside the office. Morris gets along well with other dogs and does not bother cats. He does bark at people he doesn’t know and would make a great little watch dog. Morris likes to show off little tricks by standing on his back legs until he looses his balance.
