Interested in learning how to become more in touch with your body and spirit?

Come to the Beginning Workshop on Heart Rhythm Meditation for Physical Heart Health hosted by Jeanie Underwood.

Jeanie says, “Heart Rhythm Meditation develops a strong heart. By meditating with the heart as the focus, dramatic results in health, relationships, and accomplishments can be experienced. In this class, a practical method for heart development will be taught. Participants will learn to coordinate the body’s internal rhythm, producing entrainment of the heart, breath, and brain waves.”

This class will be given at the Unitarian Universalist church on Saturday, September 6, from 9:00 AM – Noon. The cost is $50.00 and all proceeds will be donated to our fellowship.

Grand Torah dedication for New Torah Scroll

On Sunday, September 21, 2008 Chabad of Bakersfield, a local Jewish outreach
organization will be hosting a grand Torah dedication and celebration. Mrs.
Maxine Barber and family from Bakersfield, are presenting a new Torah school to
the Chabad Center in loving memory of their dear parents & grandparents, Rose &
Joseph Lebanoff.

To celebrate this auspicious occasion a grand dedication and celebration is
planned at the Chabad Center for Jewish Living, 6901 McDivitt Dr. #C. The
completion ceremony will be on its way as the scribe fills in the final letters
in the Torah. Then, a joyous procession will parade around the center under a
Chupah (canopy) with torches, live music & refreshments. The Celebration will
continue with a live concert from the Jewish Rock Band, 8th Day.
The entire community is invited to participate in the meaningful and concrete
expression of solidarity.

With Open Arms City-wide Rally

A city-wide rally is scheduled for Saturday, October 25 at 1:00 p.m. at Cecil Ave Park in Delano. The theme of the rally is "With Open Arms."

This rally is an endeavor by local churches, businesses, poiticians & the community at large to reach out to the youth of Delano.

Free food and soft drinks will be provided for attendees. Several raffles will take place during the event to raffles off prizes as ipods, dvd players, gift certificates and much more.

A "live" concert featuring local alternative & rap artist will be featured. A strong and positive message will go forth during this event through music and testimonials. Anyone wishing to help donate to this worthy cause may contact Rudy Rodriguez at 721-0111. All financial contributions will receive a tax deductible receipt. We also welcome donation of gift certificates or items from places of business. Those donating a minimum of $100 are invited to set up a booth for their business at this event providing materials distributed are positive in nature.

Trunk 'n Treat ... a fun, safe, family Halloween

Trunk 'n Treat is a fun, safe environment in which your whole family can enjoy Halloween. The event begins at 6:00 pm, October 31st, at Olive Knolls Church.

Our members bring their cars, vans and pickups into the church parking lot and decorate them with at theme. They provide games and treats for the kids to "trick or treat" each "trunk." Bounce houses and other inflatables are available for older kids. And food is available for all.

Mile 124 is a catalyst for expression & reflection pointing to God.The theme of the event is photography: "Beauty in the eye of the lenseholder." This event will look a lot like a usual Mile 124 (music, art, community), but with special photography-themed activities and featured photographers Paul Pomeroy & Solorzano Photography, too!

There is a great variety of coffee, creamers and treats at our coffee bar. People can sit deep in thought listening to music, meet some new people or express themselves with some art! Our art this time around will have a photography-theme. Oh yeah & this night is great for parents. They can come enjoy the night while their children are being cared for just feet away. FREE CHILDCARE!

P.S.We are offering up a few really cool opportunities for people to get involved. We are collecting photos. The whole first hour will be dedicated to displaying the photography of everyday people (non-pros) via slideshow. Each person can submit up 10 photos that are special, beautiful, noteworthy to them. Pelco Toys for Tots Holiday Fun Run

Pelco Toys for Tots Holiday Fun Run: 5K Race, 2 Mile Walk/Run & 1/4 Mile Kiddie Race to be held on Saturday, December 6, 2008, at California State University, Fresno.

Pelco invites all runners, families, students, businesses, and community organizations to pull out their jingle bells and Santa suits for holiday festivities in the park that everyone can enjoy. There will be live holiday music, local vendors, free food, a costume contest, and a 1/4 mile kiddie race with Santa.

Hosts Annual West Coast Disability Ministry Summit

For World’s Largest Unreached People Group

The disability community will be the focus of a training event held January 23 and 24at The First Church of the Nazarene of Pasadena, CA. The Joni and Friends Through the Roof Disability Ministry Summit will be addressing the largest under-reached people group in the world. Local pastors, ministry leaders, program staff, Sunday school teachers, workers in disability related fields, as well as individuals and families affected by disability are invited to attend. Hosted by Joni and Friends International Disability Center located in Agoura Hills, CA. The ministry seeks to fulfill “The Luke 14 Mandate” which is a call to the church to reach the 650 million people in the world affected by a disability.

Appealing to churches across the U.S., Joni and Friends Founder Joni Eareckson Tada is scheduled wrap-up the Disability Ministry Summit. The purpose of the Summit and the core of the mission of Joni and Friends is to equip the church to evangelize, embrace and disciple people affected by disabilities. Our goal is to give them the opportunity to know Jesus Christ and to discover, as well as exercise their spiritual gifts of service and leadership within our churches. The Summit will also provide a rich environment for churches, ministry leaders, and workers to network with one another.

Church Relations Director of the Joni and Friends International Disability Center and Summit organizer, Ken Chambers, notes, “The Lord Jesus in Luke Chapter 14:12-24 directs the church to ‘compel’ the poor and disabled to come into his church so that the church “will be full”. He further explained, “In observing hundreds of churches around the United States including Southern CA who have embraced this mandate just the opposite of what people usually think comes to pass. Instead of burdening the church, disability ministry brings new life to the church and opens up a whole new segment of the population who are hungry to know Christ. The church soon learns what II Corinthians 12: 9 and I Corinthians 12:22-24 teaches, that is, as the church embraces physical weakness the Lord Jesus manifests his glory and power and the church is strengthened not overtaxed with more ministry. As Luke 14:14 says the church ‘will be blessed’.”

Dr. Steve Pope, Pastor of Centerpoint Church in Simi Valley noted, “At first I thought we didn’t have the resources to reach out in an intentional way to people and families affected by disability. Now I can’t imagine having a church without ministry to individuals and families affected by disability. Our church has significantly grown in Christ-likeness and in numbers as a direct result of disability ministry. Our apprehensions simply passed away as Joni and Friends provided all we needed to grow in outreach to those affected by disability. We learned that disability ministry really only involved just doing what we were able to do and loving people where they were at. Disability ministry has made my church feel so full.”

Joni and Friend found through a survey conducted by the ministry that 80% of the churches polled indicated that they do not have the knowledge, training, or leadership necessary to launch a disability ministry.

Thirty years ago God placed a call upon Joni Eareckson Tada, herself a quadriplegic, to take the message of redemption and reconciliation through Jesus Christ to the world’s 650 million disabled people, resulting in the International Christian ministry of Joni and Friends International Disability Center located in Agoura Hills, CA.

Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Memorial Day) will be observed on Sunday, April 19th at 2:00 PM at Congregation Bnai Jacob, 600 17th Street, with a special service and program. Guest speaker Hank Snapper is the son of Dutch Gentiles who were recently honored at Yad VaShem, Israel's Holocaust Museum, in the Avenue of the Righteous for their rescue of Dutch Jews. The community is invited to attend at no charge. Congregation Bnai Jacob and Temple Beth El are pleased to co-sponsor this event.

Community Center Arrival with an Irish Twist!

A new church was dedicated on February 1, 2009 at 10 A.M. Dr. Winston Urey, a missionary pastor from Northern Ireland, has blessed the NE corner of Olive Drive and Old Farm Road as the head honcho to the vision that is Olive Branch Community Church, OBCC. As the head pastor, counselor, family man and author of Daughters of Eve, Basic Theology, and Visiting Spirits, Pastor Winston is continually blessing the congregation with new scholarly insights, inspired wisdom and hard work. OBCC, today, is the culmination of three years of prayer, dedication and physical labor. We designed the church with an old world at home village feeling in mind. “The way the economy has turned isn't making it easy,” explains Grace Monrian, a Bakersfield native & OBCC Youth Pastor, “the workers are few and the vision is big, but we have faith that the time will come where we will see this property come to its full fruition. Rolling up our sleeves daily is the key!”

OBCC currently has the Fellowship Hall/Youth Recreation Center built with great ambitions to add a preschool, bookstore, coffee shop, Christian education buildings, administration building, chapel, outdoor worship, low-income senor housing, gardens, playground, indoor/outdoor basketball courts, sand volleyball courts, frisbee golf course and more parking. OBCC hopes the community will want to draw closer to Christ through this church and we can be facilitators of that through a warm and loving congregation geared to uplift hearts through God's Word, good music, fellowship and sharing in the blessings of the property.

Wrongful Convictions Rally With Sean Penn 4/28!

Rally for change! We are doing a wrongful convictions awareness gathering with Sean Penn and friends in Bakersfield this Tuesday, April 28th at approximately 4:30pm on the Kern County Courthouse steps. The event is followed by a special “red carpet” screening of the documentary "Witch Hunt" at the Fox Theater at 2001 H Street in downtown Bakersfield at 7pm. Tickets are $20 in advance or $30 at the door and will be available on Vallitixs.com starting Thursday.

Executive Producer Sean Penn presents "Witch Hunt," a gripping indictment of the American justice system told through the lens of one small town. Voters in Bakersfield, California elected a tough-on-crime district attorney into office for more than 25 years. During his tenure he convicted dozens of innocent working class moms and dads. They went to prison, some for decades, before being exonerated. He remains in office today. This story on a micro level mirrors what the US has experienced over the last eight years. When power is allowed to exist without oversight civil rights are in jeopardy.

The profits will be donated to a yet to be determined local Bakersfield cause that addresses change in the prosecutors office. We will have national news/press coverage. We also have others attending that have similar causes.
