Filipino American Service Team (FAST) Golf Tournament

The Filipino American Service Team (FAST) is sponsoring its first ever Golf Tournament. Membership of FAST consists of many ethnic groups and is not limited to only the Filipino population. We encourage everyone to attend as well as become members of this very worthwhile organization. All profits that FAST receives is given to high school/college students in the form of scholarships.

Bakersfield Track Club Summer Series (formerly known as the Darryl Easter Memorial Handicap Series)

The Bakersfield Track Club Summer Series (formerly known as the Darryl Easter Memorial Handicap Series) is a series of 6 5K runs beginning in early June and running through most of the Summer. The events are held every other Tuesday at 7pm on Alfred Harrell Hwy just across from CALM. See Map

Caution to the wise, 5K running events should only be undertaken by individuals who have been exercising regularly. The BTC and its members are always welcoming to people who want to begin an exercise program, but seek doctor's advice first. That being said, when you do come out to enjoy the fun, make sure you are well hydrated, and if you notice you are not feeling well, slow down and let someone know.

Entry Fees T-shirts Each runner must run 3 races once a handicap is established in order to earn a race shirt. Awards Each runner must compete in three races once a handicap is established to qualify for awards. There will be awards given for overall top ten (best cumulative points in 3 races), and for the top 3 scratch times for male and female. Your Handicap Sandbaggers A sandbagger is a person who purposely runs slower in early races in order to show improvement in later runs. We have rules for you. If you show a 17% improvement your time will be adjusted according to some complicated mathematical formula and your placing will be altered. Contact

On your very first time out, you will be a "scratch runner," or a runner without a handicap. Scratch runners will be given a slip of paper indicating a 15 minute handicap (7:15 pm starting time).

The time run for the 5K this first time will be compared to a 30 minute benchmark. If you run longer than 30 minutes, you will earn a negative handicap (a 34:17 5K will result in a -4:17 handicap and you will begin your next race of the series at 4:17 before 7pm). If you run faster than 30 minutes, you will earn a positive handicap (a 22:51 5K will result in a 7:09 handicap and you will begin your next race at 7minutes and 9 seconds after 7pm).

The idea is that if everyone runs the exact same time next run, we all finish together at 7:30. That never happens. First one in wins. Best points goes to most improved runner.

Open Player Tryouts (Bakersfield Jam, NBA Development League)

2008-09 BAKERSFIELD JAM OPEN PLAYER TRYOUTS

The Bakersfield Jam of the NBA Development League will be holding open player tryouts for the 2008-2009 season on October 11^th and 12^th at Tevis Jr. High School. Tevis Jr. High School is located at 3901 Pin Oak Park Blvd., Bakersfield, CA, 93311.

Tryouts will begin on Saturday, October 11^th. The first day will run in two waves with the first one beginning at 10am and the second beginning at 6pm. Players making the first cuts will be asked to return on Sunday, October 12^th at 10am.

Pre-registration is required. The non-refundable fee is $125, with the deadline being Friday, October 3^rd, at 5pm. All players are required to submit the following: 1) Tryout Player Information Sheet; 2) Player Release/Eligibility Form; 3) Authorization, Acknowledgment & Release Form; and 4) Disclosure Form. The registration packet contains these four pages in PDF form and can be downloaded from the Jam website; www.bakersfieldjam.com. * Forms and payment must be received by the team No Later than Friday, October 3, 2008 to secure a spot. Walk-up registration is discouraged and there is no guarantee of acceptance.

Players will participate in drills in front of the Jam coaching staff, as well as an elite group of local basketball ambassadors. A cut will be made following the first day of tryouts with the top players being asked to return on Sunday. From this tryout, players could be invited to the Jam’s training camp after meeting the necessary D-League requirements.

“No where else in professional sports can athletes participate in tryouts for such a high level of play,” says Jam Managing Partner, David Higdon. “The NBA Development League is one step away from the NBA, meaning players in the D-League will be exposed to NBA player development staff including general managers on a regular basis. NBA dreams can truly be achieved through these tryouts.”

After sunset, enjoy a leisurely stroll up a foothill of Tecuya Ridge. Reach a commanding view of the surrounding mountains. Under a starry sky, scan the forest for owls, bats, woodrats, and nighthawks. Inhale the sweet fragrances of Great Basin Sagebrush and Rabbitbrush. Appreciate the rustic beauty of the San Emigdio Mountain Range within the Los Padres National Forest.

Follow a professional naturalist on a free guided interpretive tour along Lockwood Creek. Meet at the Coffee Cantina to pick up your DISCOUNTED picnic lunch (menu sent via email upon RSVP) and carpool to the trailhead. Traverse the scrubby hills past buckwheat, sagebrush, and pinon pines. Listen to the distinctive sounds of spotted towhees, red wing blackbirds, and mountain quail. Possibility of finding Coast Horned Lizard (a.k.a. horny toad). Splash down Lockwood Creek as trout swerve past your feet. Prepare to be soaking wet (water level is 1-2 feet deep). Bring a towel, change of clothes, and extra shoes.

Where: Meet at least 30 minutes before start time at the Coffee Cantina parking lot, 3011 Mount Pinos Way. Tour destination is Lockwood Creek Rd (NF-8N12) off of Lockwood Valley Rd. Take Lockwood Valley Rd from Lake of the Woods 5.5 miles to Lockwood Creek Rd (NF-8N12), turn left on dirt road and follow for roughly .8 of a mile to dirt parking lot.

Difficulty: Moderate to Strenuous (walking through creek with slippery rocks, narrow trail with some erosion). Roughly 3-4 miles round-trip.

The camp is targeted at Little League baseball players . The focus of the camp is teaching the basic fundamentals to be a successful baseball player and teammate. New Year's Baseball Mini-Camp

Kick off the New Year with professional baseball players Colby Smith, Jamie Arneson, Gabe Kapler and Maury Wills at the Pair & Marotta / Player's Edge Mini Camp.

Over the course of 3 days you'll work on hitting mechanics, defensive techniques, speed, agility and quickness, core strength and power trianing. And you'll have the encouragement of guys who have made it to the top of the game!

Ages from 10-18 will be split into seperate groups to get the most out of this awesome camp!

LQ's and BPAL presents a Boxing Exhibition Event

LQ’s Performing Arts Center is partnering with the Bakersfield Police Activities League to host a Boxing Exhibition Event on January 24, at 7 p.m. @ LQ’s Performing Arts Center (1300 19^th Street). Admission is $10 per person. Tickets will go on sale starting Friday, January 2, 2009.

This first-time collaboration between the PAL and LQ’s will showcase the boxing abilities of the youth in Kern County. All monies raised will go towards “Saving LQ’s” for the year 2009. Both the LQ’s Performing Arts Center and the Bakersfield Police Activities League are programs designed to help improve the lifestyles of the Kern County youth. However, at this time, LQ’s Performing Arts Center is the program in danger of having to close its doors to the community. So, the PAL Center has offered to do all possible in the effort of saving LQ’s for 2009.

Winter Jousting Series

“WINTER JOUSTING SERIES” BRINGS UNIQUE BLEND OF ACTION, FUN AND GAMES TO TEJON RANCH

Lebec, CA January 24^th, 2009- The American Jousting Alliance is taking over the Tejon Ranch Equestrian Center with the first of three “Winter Jousting Series” events on January 24^th beginning at 2:00pm (gates open at 11am). Additional events will be held on February 21^st and March 21^st.

This one-of-a-kind event will feature some of the best knights, warriors and war-horses involved in jousting today. In addition to the jousting tournament, the event will also feature demonstrations in dirt-boarding and swordsmanship. Patrons are welcomed and encouraged to participate in competitions such as archery, spear throwing, sack racing and shield hitting.

In an effort to familiarize people with this unique sport as well as to help children in-need, several hundred tickets will be given away to children’s charities. For the paying attendee the ticket costs are as follows:

-Children 5 and under: Free

-Ages 6-14: $6.00

General Admission: $10.00

Directions: Take the 99 Freeway towards Lebec and take exit #207. Signage will be posted at the exit leading towards the event.

Frazier Mountain Family Loop Walk

Frazier Mountain Family Loop Walk, Lockwood Valley, Ventura County (in partnership with the Los Padres Forest Association)

Meet at the Chuchupate Ranger Station, Mount Pinos Ranger District of the Los Padres National Forest. Enjoy a pleasant stroll through sagebrush scrub and pinon pine forest. Look for wildlife evidence. Possibility of snow. Appropriate for young children.

Who: All ages (Minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.)

Where: Meet at Chuchupate Ranger Station, 34580 Lockwood Valley Rd., Frazier Park, CA 93225.

Difficulty: Easy (1-2 miles round-trip, dirt trail/road with gradual elevation gain, smooth terrain, possible snow)

Special Instructions/Supplies: Please arrive at least 15 minutes before start time. Bring 1 quart of water per person. Wear weather protection (jacket, etc.), durable hiking socks and shoes (extra pair for wet tours), long pants, and backpack for snacks. Bring first aid kit (Band-Aids, antiseptic, allergy medicine, tweezers, etc.) and cell phone. Bring flashlight/headlamp and layered clothing for evening tours.

RPL 2009 Bakersfield!

The RPL will be picking up where the XPSL left off by returning to the green grass of the Kern County Fairgrounds in Bakersfield, California February 28 – March 1 for the first stop of the 2009 season. Come watch all the fun, or join in and play for FREE!

The Regional Paintball League (RPL) is a new amateur tournament paintball league focused on growing the sport on the west coast at the grass roots level. The series is composed of three regional leagues; the West Coast RPL, the Northwest RPL and the Southwest RPL. With professional players refereeing, entry fees as low as $300 (FREE to Bakersfield Locals!), divisions from beginner to open, prizes for all teams, and high quality grass venues; the RPL is the perfect solution for west coast paintballers looking for a home. The formats are 3-player and 5-player with all games being best 2 out of 3, which guarantee each team at least 6 games in the prelims. Every event is also a trade show!

Read Across Bakersfield

In order to celebrate Dr Seuss’ Birthday, teachers from the Bakersfield City School District will be hosting the 2^nd Annual Read Across Bakersfield event at the Fox Theater on Sunday March 1, 2009 at 3:00 PM. The event is free and will include a showing of Horton Hears A Who, games, booths, magicians, photos with the Cat, face painting, stories and of course, lots of fun that is funny. The Growler Sporting Clays Tournament

The Beardsley School Community Foundation holds three major fundraisers each year to support students of the District. The annual Beardsley carnival, held in October each year, is a successful community building event that continues to draw people back to school each year. November calls out to the golfers. Our Growler golf tournament continues to sell out each year thanks to the generosity of the Bakersfield community.

On March 21st, the fourth annual Growler Sporting Clays Tournament will be held at 5-Dogs Range, near Woody, CA. If you are an outdoor enthusiast looking for a fun event, this is your ticket.
