On June 27, the LA Wheelmen sponsored their 51st Annual Grand Tour cycling event. This event is popular among the cycling community offering double, triple, and quad routes, which is organized with check points that include food, water, and snacks. These check points are staffed with volunteers for 24-hours who welcome you with a smile and cheer you on as you make your way along the route, ultimately crossing the finish line. I, along with five friends, decided to take on the lowland or highland double century challenge. With personal goals in mind, we set out at 4:00am, leaving the Malibu Civic Center, to accomplish this goal. The route took us to Port Hueneme, Moorpark, Ojai, Rincon, and back to Malibu where we finished 200 miles at approximately 10:00pm. Congratulations we did it!!

Unfortunately this accomplishment comes with mixed emotions. As we packed the car to make our way back to Bakersfield, our hearts were filled with sadness and sorrow to hear that the father/son team, Rod and Christian Armas, were struck by a car on PCH, taking Rod’s life and severely injuring Christian. Our prayers go out to the Armas family during this very difficult time. May it comfort you to know that you’re in our thoughts now, and in the days to come.
