Summer is winding down. Cash is running low. But there are so many things you can do with these last few weeks of vacation!
You can have a home-cation right here in Bakersfield. Get a hotel for a night, and pretend you are on vacation. Relax at the pool, order room service, go to a restaurant you’ve never visited. Visit a museum, like CALM, KernCountyMuseum, or the Bakersfield Museum of Art. Watch a Blaze baseball game, or go to the Speedway. Go to a local spa (there are so many good ones now) and get the works! If you want some recommendations, I’m happy to share. When you get home, you will feel refreshed, without the travel expenses!
Or, there are great places to go within a couple of hours that are relatively cheap. Head to one of the local Indian gambling casinos and pretend you're a high roller! Rent a boat and go to a local, or nearby lake for the day. Drive to Mountain Home State Forest, near Porterville. Camping there is free, so take a break from the heat and enjoy the peaceful, giant sequoias. Sequoia National Park is just another hour or so away. It isn’t free, but it also has access to stores and showers, so it’s worth the money, and still relatively cheap. There are many locations near the Kern River to camp, which are fun, cheap (or free), and nearby. And, you can always take a little drive out to Pismo Beach. All of your neighbors can’t be wrong! It’s a fun, relatively inexpensive place to camp and play.
If you’re up to a longer drive, don’t forget about LA, Santa Barbara, Solvang, San Diego, Santa Monica, Vegas, Sacramento, and Lake Tahoe. They are all 1-7 hours away, so they are do-able over a long weekend.
Or grab a few friends and head over to wine country. You can travel around in a bus, taste wine, and crash at your hotel. You might be a little more subdued the next morning as you drive home, but happy with your purchases!
On the third Sunday of every month there are motorcycle races at Willow Springs, near Lancaster. It’s usually about $10, and there are sometimes other car races at the same time. It’s pretty exciting to see all of the talent we have in the area! Then you can stay in Tehachapi to relax before you head home, or head south for some more fun!
And, if you're willing to spend a little more money, but don't want to travel very far, try Rankin Ranch near Caliente. It's a cool little dude ranch with lots and lots of activities for the kids and adults.
Whatever you do, don't let this summer end with a fizzle! Have some fun!!
