Each week, kindergarteners in BCSD are learning six conceptually developed Amazing Words for speaking and listening. The children listen to stories, sing songs, dramatize and illustrate these words to develop vocabulary and concepts.
The story for the week, Violet's Music, was about friends coming together to make a band. The six Amazing Words were: drum, rattle, horn, saxophone, guitar and band. Amazing music by volunteer band members brought the words to life for 140 kindergarten students at Owens Primary School. Each band member named his instrument and demonstrated different sounds, melodies and ways of playing the instrument. Steve Eisen presented a terrific trumpet lesson that had the children giggling, clapping and singing! Zeke Victor followed on sensational saxophone, Jason Gomez on great guitar, and Canaan McDuffie captured rhythms with on the drum with sticks, hands, and brushes. Canaan even brought an egg shaker for the rattle.
The presentation culminated with the band friends making music just as Violet did in the story. Children motioned to familiar songs: Eency, Weency Spider, Twinkle Little Star, Where Is Thumbkin, ABC song. Thanks to the enthusiasm and amazing music of the band members, Amazing Words came to life for 140 kindergarten children!
