I Thought I was too old to learn how to use a PC or master the Internet but I never lost my desire to know what makes things tick. Some years ago, I had the opportunity to go through the Senior Employment Training Program, here in Bakersfield. Some generous business owners donated computers to the center and then --they turned me loose.
There's a million stories in the Valley, this is just one of them.
I'm over 60.
I'm old enough to know better.
This is my story.
I have finally met the enemy face-to-face.
The invincible, hair-pulling, teeth-grinding, addicting, COMPUTER and my whole perspective has changed. There was a time, if I saw a mouse, I ran so fast I left no footprints behind. But now I can't wait to get my hands on one!
My domestic dreams have been shattered. My kitchen is no longer a safe haven. No more do I fantasize while mashing the potatoes wondering what we're going to have for dinner. Oh no, now I wonder ... do I boot the beets or download the Ding Dongs?
And so my friends, if you see a senior citizen wandering aimlessly about, slobbering and drooling, eyes glazed and crossed, playing with a yo-yo and repeating over and over, "na na noo noo" -- take pity.
She's a computer junkie.
She's no longer online.
She has met the enemy and he's won.
