Project: Ghost

Project: Ghost (running late nights October 12th through the 27th at The Empty Space) is the collaborative and experimental follow-up to last year’s Project: Murder.  Though unlike Project: Murder, which consisted of several short plays revolving around a central theme, Project: Ghost will be one cohesive story whose parts are penned independently by several different authors.

While the “Theatre” endeavors to foster a functioning community of directors, actors, and technicians, and calls on various specialties to work symbiotically in the production of any play, it is the writer who is forced to work alone.  A writer’s job is often a solitary and unstructured task, taking months or even years to finish and polish even the smallest of pieces.

Project: Ghost is an attempt to bring the writer into the theatre.  To make him work within a closely delineated structure and beholden to those around him… as an actor is to a script or a director is to the shape of his playing space.  Since each writer will be responsible for a small section of the story- he will be forced to accept the inventions of his peers as they are forced to accept his.  What’s true on one page is true on all.

Many writers mistakenly believe that freedom equals creativity when in fact the opposite is usually true.  Rules allow the writer, force the writer, actually, into his best work.  Rules point out flaws and offer guidance but moreover they disallow lazyness and forbid inattention.

Throughout Project: Ghost, writers will be involved in all manners of the production.  They will receive feedback from producers, directors, and actors.  They will be called upon to make changes and provide valuable feedback to everyone involved.  But most of all they will have the opportunity to mold their creation past the “print” button.

Interested authors should contact Jarred Clowes ASAP.  Currently there are positions for five authors, though in order to accommodate all those who wish to participate more can be created if necessary.  The finished play should be between 50 and 70 minutes with no intermission.

Auditions for interested actors will be held Saturday, September 9th from 12pm to 3pm.
