ARVIN, Calif., August 15, 2007 — Arvin kindergarten students beamed with excitement Wednesday morning as AT&T’s volunteer organization, AT&T Pioneers, delivered 140 backpacks filled with a variety of school supplies to the entire kindergarten class at Sierra Vista Elementary School.
Committed to ensuring all children have the tools they need to succeed in school, the AT&T Pioneers, along with representatives from the offices of State Senator Dean Florez, Congressman Jim Costa and Assemblywoman Nicole Parra, presented each youngster with pencils, paper, notebooks, crayons, rulers, glue, scissors and folders – materials that will help them excel in the classroom.
“The community spirit demonstrated by the AT&T Pioneers should serve as an example to us all,” said Senator Dean Florez. “They’re giving kids more than backpacks; they’re giving them a chance at a brighter future and the knowledge that people they haven’t even met care enough to want to help them succeed.”
The AT&T Pioneers is a dynamic group of active and retired employees who, along with their Pioneer Partners and friends, volunteer their time to enhance the communities where they work and live. Each year AT&T Pioneers collect donations of backpacks and school supplies to present to those students who are in need.
“AT&T is proud to support initiatives that improve student achievement,” said AT&T External Affairs Area Director Jan Bans. “Both students and teachers face great challenges in the classroom, and AT&T is pleased to provide these youngsters with the tools they need to succeed.”
This is the third year that the AT&T Pioneers have partnered with a Kern County school to provide students school supplies.
The AT&T Pioneers are the nation's largest company-sponsored volunteer organization with more than 350,000 AT&T employees and retirees, who volunteer their time to enhance the communities where they work and live. The Pioneers mainly focus on education, social needs and the environment. In 2005, AT&T Pioneers donated more than 11.3 million hours of their time to community outreach activities — nearly $204 million worth of volunteer time.
