Since the war in Iraq began more than four years ago, American public opinion has changed from overwhelming support to dissatisfaction.
But polls and numbers cannot describe the feelings of a mother whose child is shot at daily, or a friend who is grateful for those fighting the war — even though it cost one of those friends his life.
We asked the community — including many families of soldiers currently serving in Iraq — to submit their thoughts on our Web site.
The responses were varied yet singularly powerful.

What the polls say
A nationwide poll by CBS News conducted in June showed that 77 percent of Americans thought the war was going “badly,” and 40 percent believed all troops should be removed from Iraq.
California voters feel the same. A Field Poll released in mid-August shows 39 percent of voters supporting full withdrawal. And in both polls, 26 percent want to see the number of troops in Iraq decreased.
