Goalie and midfielder, Taylor Buttcane loves to play soccer. More importantly, he appreciates all the volunteer work that goes into making a season happen for hundreds of kids each year. That is why, when the AYSO region -- played on the BenzVisco soccer fields in Tehachapi -- needed help building their referee hut, Taylor Buttcane stepped in this summer and did the job to complete his Leadership Service Project to obtain Eagle Scout, the highest rank a young man can achieve in Scouting.
The referee hut was already in the process of being constructed by the AYSO region. But when the snack bar burned down several years ago, work stopped on the referee hut, and all attention was focused on fixing the snack bar, as it is the major source of funding for soccer. And so the idea for Taylor’s project came about.
Beginning in May of this year, the walls were completed with insulation, dry-walling, and a fresh coat of paint. Cement was poured around the perimeter of the building to create a nice outdoor patio. Water and electricity were connected to the building to install lights and a fan. Finally in July, the outside was painted in white with green trim. Buttcane’s dad –also an Eagle Scout -- said, “Taylor is the only person in the family who would attempt a construction project. I’m very proud of him.”
Nowadays, referees in Tehachapi have a home; and the new hut has created a buzz, such that interest for refereeing has increased. AYSO officials hold classes in the new structure and can relax when they are not officiating a game.
The project took two months, nearly $1000, and over 250 man-hours for the senior at Tehachapi High School to organize friends from his neighborhood and his church to complete the existing shell. Buttcane held yard sales to raise money for the project. He also was able to garner donations for the paint and drywall.
In addition to soccer, Taylor Buttcane runs cross country and is actively involved at school. He plays Saxophone in the school band, and occasionally solo’s during concert season. Buttcane also enjoys his engineering class and is currently running for president of the Space Settlement Design team --sponsored by Northrup-Gruman – where students design a real space station in a world wide competition. College plans are two years away as Taylor will be going on a mission for the Mormon Church. When he does attend, Buttcane hopes to major in mechanical engineering and be a 3-dimensional designer.
