KERNVILLE, CA — Thanks to many volunteers, over 100 bags of unsightly trash have been removed from the riverbanks of the Upper Kern River, on the Sequoia National Forest.
Guy Jeans, owner and operator of the Kern River Fly Shop, organized a volunteer river clean-up project in partnership with the Sequoia National Forest this past Saturday, November 10th. The volunteer project was tremendously successful. People of all ages, teens to adults, from several communities across southern California worked together to make the Upper Kern River a more pleasant place for visitors and locals to recreate.
The volunteers represented the Kern River Fly Shop (Kernville), Southern Sierra Fly Fishers (Kernville), Deep Creek Fly Fishers (San Bernardino), Santa Lucia Fly Fishers (San Luis Obispo), Southwest Council Federation of Fly Fishers (Orange County), and Kern River Fly Fishers (Bakersfield). Sierra South Mountain Sports, El Jacalito Mexican Restaurant, and Halflight Productions also participated.
Approximately 47 participants picked up and hauled out litter along a 20 mile stretch of shoreline, from Kernville to the Johnsondale Bridge. Areas targeted were those outside of the developed campgrounds, representing many of the locations fishermen and other day users utilize throughout the year.
South Sierra Fishermen provided bags and gloves while El Jacalito provided drinks and lunch afterwards.
Many of the volunteers mentioned how happy they were to be able to enhance the area and give something back to a place they enjoy in their leisure. They also felt it was an awesome opportunity for the fly fishing clubs to come together, make new friends, and make a difference.
