The Lions Club of Bakersfield met with representatives from the Taft College Transition to Independent Living (TIL) program Dec. 13 to celebrate the Lions’ recent donation to the program. This fall the Lions donated $7,500 to Taft College to be used for the purchase of a new van for the TIL program.
After purchasing the van earlier this month, TIL students and faculty met with the Lions Club on Thursday to thank the service club for the donation, which accounted for roughly one-fourth of the total cost of the vehicle. Lions Club of Bakersfield president Phillip Ball said helping out charitable organizations is what the Lions Club is for. “Our motto is ‘We Serve,’” said Ball, “and that’s our whole purpose. It’s all about what we can do for the community.”
Ball also said he credits Jeff Ross, Taft College’s Coordinator of Student Support Services, for making the Lions aware of the TIL program’s need for support.
"We're thrilled to be able to help out where we can,” said Ball, “we just need more guys like Jeff to approach us and let us know where we can be of service.”
According to Ball, the Lions of Bakersfield have raised over $100,000 since June to be donated to programs like TIL. In addition to local organizations, the Lions of Bakersfield have also donated to the American Red Cross, the American Lung Association and several other nationwide charities.
