Hello Everyone,

So this is my review on the new Cuban restaurant located on California and Chester Ave. Why is my review important? Well, I can say it isn’t. BUT, there is a reason to my madness, really! Cuban and Puerto Rican food are alike. And well.. I am Puerto Rican! We may have different names for the food that is served, but it is basically almost the same ingredients/preparation. Now the difference between Cuban/Puerto Rican food and Mexican Food is that Mexicn Food is all about making it "spicey", where as Cuban/Puerto Rico food is all about using "spices". The food is all about Flavor.

Ok, down to the serious grits. My first visit at the Cuban Restaurant was not “outstanding”. My mother and I decided to go around 7-8 pm, which for the Cuban Restaurant is around closing time. As most restaurants that are based on buffets (large quantity of food sitting in trays), they make the food in the morning and lunch, and to not waste food, around closing time its just.. “whatever is left over”.  The food was still warm, and delicious, but it could have been better. The first night, both managers (brothers) stop by our table and said hello. The Cuban/Puerto Rican/Dominican Culture is based on friendly people (am I friendly?). The two brothers sat next to us and had a talk about the food, why they made the restaurant, and the likes! So the company was really nice. And in the background while we ate, they played Salsa, and Merengue music. You know I was in heaven.

The downfall is the restaurant was not “built” but it was really taken over from the previous Mexican taco “fast food joint”. So the “taco bell” tables and chairs still exist, and the ghostly image of a drive thru still exists. Now with that “mirage”, you expect the prices of the food to be “fast food”. Well it isn’t, for two people it’s around $25.00. That includes a large meal (rice, side dish, and main dish), and a drink (Malta India for me!). I’m estimating due to the fact that my mother wanted to try every dish, and well it cost more than the average $25 dollars plate for us that night.
Ok now this is how the Buffet Line works. No it’s not “all you can eat”. They have about 15 different buffet trays to look at, you point out which rice you want, which beans, which side dish and the main dish. I had the arroz con pollo (rice and chicken). The food was delicious! My mother had.. a lot of other things. Bacalao (fish) was one of them.  But my mother was not disappointed! As a matter of fact she went again on Friday!

Now, I had my second visit today for lunch. Wow.. There were so many people! The rumor truly gets around. J So today I had the white rice, black beans, sweet plantains (yes, it’s a banana) and meat from a pig’s leg (Penir is the Puerto Rican word). Mmmmm. I finished the whole plate!  By the way, there are other things you can choose instead of just the Buffet Line, they offer breakfast plates, and sandwiches and I think other stuff too. Food that the restaurant staff can actually cook right there and then for you. I haven’t tried them yet, but if you do, can you please send me your review on which you liked, and I will try it for my next visit.
So as my review, I think if you want to eat a well rounded “restaurant” lunch (maybe breakfast!), then the Cuban Restaurant is the place, but if you want a romantic “dinner” place.. You are still better off going to BJ’s.  And the food? I was not disappointed, I am by all means happy that a restaurant was made that resembles Puerto Rican food. You just don’t know how crazy we are about “sweet plantains!”.

Raine
