Dust off your boots, grab your partner, and head out to The Kern County Fairgrounds this weekend for three days of square dancing at the annual Bakersfield Fiesta. The 42nd edition of the event starts Friday and runs through Sunday, with an estimated 1,600 participants, many from out of town, headed to Bakersfield.
Programs will run simultaneously in five buildings at the fairgrounds starting Friday at 5 p.m. Saturday’s events run from 9:00 a.m. to 11 p.m. with the grand march taking place at 7:45 that evening. The Fiesta starts Sunday at 9 a.m. and concludes at 1 p.m.
The event draws in couples and groups from across California and the United States. Last years event attracted square dancers from as far away as Alaska, Utah, and Japan! Many participants are estimated to stay at least two nights in local hotels and dine out at various local restaurants during their stay.
Tickets are still available to those interested in participating in the event. Individual day pass prices vary and can be purchased at the door. RV parking is also available for $20 per night.
The first Bakersfield Fiesta was held in 1965 at what was then known as the Convention Center. In 1972 the Fiesta outgrew the downtown venue and moved to the fairgrounds where dancers occupy every building during its three day run.
