I recently read an article published in the Bakersfield Californian titled "Ten reasons to change CSUB to Bakersfield State" and wanted to correct an argument made by Andy Kehe (I know the article is quite old).
Andy argues that CSU Bakersfield should be called "Bakersfield State" and he cites other CSU campuses that use the "City-first" in the name of the school. For example, he cites Chico State, Fresno State, and Sacramento State.
Andy, the schools you referenced are CSU Chico, CSU Fresno, and CSU Sacramento. They are nick-named Chico State, Fresno State, and Sac State but these are just their nicknames, much as with Bakersfield State. Only five campuses of the 23 CSU campuses start with the name of the city or county (Humboldt, SF, San Jose, SD, and Sonoma).
Here is a link that will help you with your future research: CalState System.
