Students Prove Theories at Kern County Science Fair

Using algae to reduce air pollution and investigating the mathematical model of harmonic spring motion were just some of the subjects under scrutiny by hundreds of students who entered projects in the 21st annual Kern County Regional Science Fair held (today) April 2 at the Rabobank Convention Center in Bakersfield.
Senior and Middle School Division students placing first, second and in some cases third in categories may be eligible to compete in the 57th annual California Science Fair to be held May 20 at the California Science Center in Los Angeles.

Approximately 700 students in grades 4-12 from 140 schools competed in many categories ranging from aerodynamics/hydrodynamics to thermochemistry. Entries were judged on scientific thought/engineering goals, creativity, organization, completeness, clarity, effort and motivation. Students had to explain their displays, log books and hypothesis to a panel of judges.
The science fair is administered by the Kern County Superintendent of Schools with primary sponsorship provided by Aera Energy LLC. Additional sponsorship and support is offered by Chevron North America Exploration and Production, Occidental of Elk Hills, and Kern County Science Foundation.

Students Prove Theories at Kern County Science Fair The caption below is incorrect and was attached to my daughter's picture in the story about The Kern County Science Fair. Actually in many of the science fair projects students hypothesize one thing but through their data and trials find out that their hypothesis is incorrect. This is part of the learning process and does not make their science fair project a poor one. Many scientists hypothesize one thing but have a completely different outcome and they can learn about more this way. (The project my daughter worked on was not showing how algae could reduce acid rain but, the affect of acid rain on the algae cellular structure.) In turn we found out that algae could help reduce CO2 from large power plants and be turned into biofuel reducing the need for fossil fuel, which is what creates acid rain. El Tejon School 7th-grader Melissa Gore, won in Middle School Division Pharmacology and Biochemistry category at the Kern County Fair with her project showing how algae can reduce acid rain.
