The Better Business Bureau in Central California would like to help you protect yourself against the possibility of identity theft. Get rid of all those old bank statements, credit card bills and miscellaneous paper junk for free on Saturday, May 3 at West High School from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Bring up to six boxes of documents to the West High School parking lot (1200 New Stine Road) and Shred-It, a professional mobile shredding company, will provide on-site destruction while you watch. There is a voluntary $3/box donation for additional boxes that will be given to the Kern County Boys & Girls Club.
The event is FREE and open to the public. Call 322-2074, ext. 331 for more information.
Did you know that protecting your identity is largely in YOUR OWN hands? 56% of identity theft victims traced the theft to something that was stolen from their own possession.
Last year alone, 8.1 million Americans became victims of ID theft, resulting in the loss of $45 billion, according to a 2008 report from Javelin Strategy and Research. The report notes that the majority (56 percent) of ID theft occurs when the thief had direct contact with the victim’s personal information, through a stolen or lost wallet, rifling through a personal mailbox or trashcan, or even lifting documents from inside a home or business.
Help us help others destroy their personal documents before someone destroys their id.
