Morgan Mize and Baylie Duncan celebrated their entrance into the “teen years” with a huge party. They have been best friends since kindergarten and their birthdays are only a month apart, so a combination party seemed in order. A big birthday bash with all their school friends from Warren Jr. High, included dinner and dancing for 50 – it really was a dream for both girls.
A huge party normally means lots of gifts – right? The girls had thought about that and actually felt kind of guilty about asking their friends for gifts; when they really felt blessed with everything they “need” and most of what they “want.” “Let’s ask for donations and then give them to a charity,” they suggested. Picking a charity was not hard at all – The American Cancer Society was the obvious choice. Both girls have lost their grandfathers to cancer, Don Fournier in 2002 (Morgan) and Larry Morris in 2007 (Baylie).
With happy hearts they sent out the invitations with a small note tucked inside, “In lieu of gifts, a donation to The American Cancer Society would be greatly appreciated - in honor of our grandfathers.” On Friday, April 18 the birthday party went off without a hitch, the kids had a great time and many of them came in the door with envelopes.
To their amazement and surprise, those little envelopes held more than $1,300 in donations to the ACS. Friends and family stepped up to the plate and made those donations in honor of Morgan and Baylie’s grandfather’s and the loved ones in their own lives that have or will suffer from cancer in their lifetime. What an accomplishment!!
Morgan and Baylie will make their donation at Relay for Life this weekend – two thirteen year old girls that traded birthday presents for donations to a charity. Maybe teenagers aren’t all bad.
