                First Book-Bakersfield is accepting applications for a fall book

distribution to eligible pre-kindergarten through 2nd grade classes in

Kern County. Thirty classes will be selected to receive a series of six

books (one per month) beginning in late October. Applications are

available at these Bakersfield locations: KGET TV17 — 2120 L Street,

Junior League of Bakersfield — 19th and E streets, Beale Memorial

Library — 701 Truxtun Ave., GW School Supply — 4220 California

Ave., and The Learning Stop — 6655 Ming Ave. Applications must be

completed and returned by Sept. 19 to the following address: First

Book-Bakersfield, P.O. Box 2503, Bakersfield, CA 93303.

                Organizations wishing to apply for First Book distributions must meet the following eligibility requirements:
                • Incorporate literacy/reading as part of their program activities
                • Serve children and families from low-income households (typically 80% of                     participants come from low-income households)
                • Provide multiple book distributions to each child in the program with a                             minimum distribution cycle of one new book every six to eight weeks
                • Support the child’s ongoing education outside of the school classroom setting.

                First Book-Bakersfield is a local Advisory Board of First Book, a

national nonprofit organization dedicated to providing children from l

low-income families the opportunity to read and own their first new

books. First Book-Bakersfield was formed in 2001 and since that time

has distributed more than 12,000 books to 2,700 pre-kindergarten

through second grade students in Kern County.
