Something new for those with a lunch-time appetite and a desire to help severely disabled citizens in Kern County. It is called Soup-toberfest, a 12-2 p.m. event on Oct. 30, where you can feast on a warm bowl of Sequoia Sandwich Company chili or clam chowder served in collectible, ceramic bowls, hand-painted by Bakersfield Association for Retarded Citizens' (BARC) clients. The cost is $12 and the proceeds benefit BARC and MOVE (Mobility Opportunities Via Education) International, both of which are making it possible for school children and adults with severe disabilities to gain independent movement. Soup-toberfest will be held in the Kern County Superintendent of Schools' Courtyard, directly behind the superintendent's office building at 17th and L streets in Bakersfield.
Each lunch also includes bread, drink and desert. Get there by noon to witness the official opening ceremony featuring a release of butterflies and a performance by the BARC singers. Event sponsors are Sequoia Sandwich Company, Color Me Mine, Insect Lore, Foster Youth Services Youth Mentors and the Kern County Superintendent of Schools.
