On Saturday, November 22, the ASA Chapter-Kern Autism Network will present “What to Expect in an IEP and How to Understand Goals and Objectives,” a workshop led by Dian Schneider.  The workshop will be held at the Kern County Superintendent of Schools office, 1300 - 17th Street, Room 1B, in Bakersfield, from 8:15 a.m. until noon.

Dian Schneider is a Family Resource Specialist with H.E.A.R.T.S. Connection FRC/FEC where she specializes in Special Education Laws and Section 504 Laws.  Her main focus is to help the parents she works with become the most effective advocates for their child.  Dian has a strong belief that developing a good working relationship with the schools is the most effective way to meet your child’s educational needs.

Dian collaborated with the Bakersfield City School District to write the IEP curriculum used by both H.E.A.R.T.S. and Bakersfield City Schools with the shared belief that if parents and professionals are receiving the same information, everyone comes to the table with the same knowledge.

She also served on the committee that developed and revised the District’s “A Parent Guide to Special Education” book that parents in the district are offered to help them understand Special Education process, laws and their rights and responsibilities for their child.

Currently Dian serves on both the Bakersfield City Schools and Kern High School districts Community Advisory Committees.  She also serves on the Transition Faire Committee for the Kern High School District which is put on every other year to help parents and students as their children transition out of the high school setting.

Dian was introduced to the world of Special Needs by her amazing son Nick.  Her desire to help other families in this “strange new world” led to her becoming one of the founding parents of H.E.A.R.T.S. Connection FRC/FEC in 1990.

This workshop is for parents, teachers and those working with autistic individuals.  Topics will include an overview of the IEP process, parents’ rights and responsibilities under IDEA, the difference between a 504 and an IEP, and writing smart goals and objectives.

Registration begins at 8:15 a.m. and the presentation starts at 9 a.m.  This workshop is free to all families with children on the autism spectrum.  Seating is limited and reservations are required. Refreshments will be served.  To register to attend, contact Ramona Puget at 661-588-4235 or email kernautism@gmail.com.
