Yard Signs:
The moment last summer when Barack Obama clinched the Democratic nomination I went to my garage, pulled out my “Vote Pro-Life” sign and put in my front yard. My home is positioned in such a way that everybody in my neighborhood could see it. The sign stayed there for about six or eight weeks, then it was gone.
OK, I thought. I then obtained a length of angle iron and bolted a square of plywood to it. I glued a pro-life message to the plywood and drove the angle iron into the ground and secured it in such a way that it could be removed only with a great deal of difficulty. The next morning the iron had been bent into an angle by whoever had tried to remove it, but it still stood in place.
Two weeks later someone came during the night and actually tore off the paper I had glued onto the plywood. My wife and I agreed that the bare wood sign on its crooked post should stand there just as it was for all to see. After a few days we awoke to find that the sign had been bent down to where it almost touched the ground. That someone would attack it was astonishing. And yet, the very next morning, we went out to find that someone else had straightened out the metal pole so that the sign now stood perfectly erect.
We left it standing and got a wrought iron frame to secure a new pro-life sign to stand beside it
At my wife’s suggestion we placed flowers at the foot of the old sign to reflect our determination. When I stepped away to look at my finished work I was struck to the heart. We had not intended the effect, but the old sign now resembled nothing less than the marker over the grave of a nameless child. Next to it the new sign says simply “Vote Pro-Life”.
