It’s like walking on water, an incredible experience at Crustacean in the famous Beverly Hills. Not to mention you literally do walk on water, a Koi aquarium at least, as you enter this restaurant, which is very appropriate considering the seafood/French/Vietnamese atmosphere. A very warm welcome is given to you right away, just as our table was with our reservations. Although if we had had no reservations I would not have minded waiting in the bar area, it is the first thing that is seen when entering the restaurant and is very inviting, as well as crowded.
The hostess escorts us to the table, while wearing her five inch heels, yet warning me to watch my step going down three steps that ended the Koi fish path way, but leading the way to the dining room. It is an open room with very tall ceilings. This place makes you feel like a million bucks, the mood is loud but romantic with soft dim lights, lights lining the floor, a band playing and people laughing everywhere. The waiter acts as if he is your best friend, and is quick to tell you what the specials are and what his favorites are. In his tie and jackets, he is our butler for the night. The romantic mood of the place must have gotten out because are couples everywhere including the one right next to us, and we can hear everything the lady is saying (and she seems to be the only one talking). So this place should not be chosen to break up with someone, or to have a serious conversation with someone and definitely not a business type meeting place.
Our “best friend” comes back to the table with wine in hand, he waits expecting you to twirl the wine, taste it and accept it. (A little to high class for the average Bakersfield family, but a nice treat if you’re not the one buying. ) There is not a single child to be seen here, but it is well around ten o’clock, and in Beverly Hills…Everyone is very dressed up as if they’re going to a black and white affair, and almost everyone has a glass of wine in their hand.
There are people seated outside and even they can hear the band playing, this band is playing a bit of everything, which is appropriate because Crustacean’s menu has a bit of everything, from steak plate’s, seafood, Vietnamese garlic noodles, and spilt pineapple shrimp. It is family style or ale carte so don’t be surprised if you get carried away ordering sides and appetizers and the portions are not small! The food comes out and you just know it is yours because the steam coming off the top creates a pathway of aroma and makes your mouth water. The noodles, I couldn’t get enough of, the shrimp was massive, fresh and amazingly smothered in some garlicky buttery sauce.
The waiter comes and completely clears the table and uses his crumb scraper and scrapes off the crumbs, and then gives us new forks and asks what we want for dessert, there are not many options, but the ones that are offered sound good after a large intake of seafood. The sherbet was our choice, and those portions are small, our sherbet ice cream came with three different scoops but they are the size of small golf balls. Our server suggests a dessert wine and brings it out again waits for you to test it, then pours more. The bill comes and I give it, the bill, a $$$$1/2. They accept credit cards, thank god or I people wouldn’t know what to do.
The band, the bar, and the people make you want to stay and hang out for hours, it is such a fun and fine dining experience. We finally left almost two hours later, back to the car in valet parking, That is the way to go because our car comes right to us, no hassle walking or finding parking, not to mention there is no designated parking for this restaurant. It is great place to visit and I can’t wait to go back.
