Treat that special someone to a dinner or lunch like no other with a trip to Bakersfield College’s Renegade Room beginning in early February. Enjoy impressive and delicious cuisine in a relaxed and comfortable setting while helping Bakersfield College’s culinary students learn the valuable real-life skills that will help them find jobs in Bakersfield’s fast-paced restaurant market.
The Renegade Room offers gourmet lunches on Wednesday starting on February 4 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Dinners on Tuesday and Thursday begin February 10, with dinner available from 5:30 – 7 p.m. each evening. Students in Bakersfield College’s Culinary Arts Program prepare and serve the meals under the tutelage of Director of Food and Nutrition, Chef Pat Coyle.
“Renegade Room patrons become part of the educational process,” Coyle said. “At the beginning of the year, the students appear scared and unsure. By the end of the semester, they are confident in their meal preparation and service techniques. The Renegade Room is a hands-on experience that the classroom can’t teach.”
The Bakersfield College Culinary Arts program offers associate degrees in Food Service Management and Child Nutrition Management, with certificates in Culinary Arts, Child Nutrition Management and Dietetic Services.
The menu is elegant and the experience is one that will be remembered, according to Coyle. Lunches are less than $8 per person, and dinners are $10.95 per person, both plus tax. The atmosphere is relaxed and the dress is casual. The current menu can be viewed online at www.bakersfieldcollege.edu/renegaderoom.
“Our patrons reap the reward of enjoying a delectable gourmet meal at an incredibly low price,” Coyle said. “Our students learn how to effectively manage all the challenges that a regular restaurant sees on a daily basis.”
The Renegade Room Restaurant at Bakersfield College is located in the Family and Consumer Education (FACE) Building at Panorama Drive and Mount Vernon Avenue. Free parking is available near the restaurant. The Renegade Room is available for large parties on regular business days as well and arrangements can be made by calling 395-4441. Take out meals are always available.
