Nueva High School Named "California Model School"

The Kern High School District’s (KHSD) Nueva Continuation High School has been named a 2009 Model Continuation High School by the California Dept. of Education.
Nueva, located in Lamont, was one of 14 continuation schools recognized as outstanding programs on Wednesday by State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O’Connell.
Model schools are honored "because of their exemplary programs that are designed to close the achievement gap, keep kids in school so they can graduate, and adequately prepare them for careers or college,” according to O’Connell.
Continuation high schools serve students age 16 years or older who are deficient in school credits and at risk of not graduating. Continuation schools are focused on school-to-career education, individualized instruction, intensive counseling, and flexible scheduling. There are more than 500 continuation high schools in California.
Nueva Site Administrator Mike Bhone attributed the school’s success to a team effort and a family environment. “To be recognized by the State Superintendent is quite an honor and a credit to a Nueva staff that does an exemplary job of working with students and leading them to success,” said Bhone. “We pride ourselves on fostering a family environment that connects to their students and their individual needs.”
Requirements for model school designation include exemplary program effectiveness, school management, instructional strategies, testing & evaluation, and counseling. As a model school, Nueva is now included in a list of 75 model California continuation schools worthy of school visitations. Model schools retain their title for three years and must submit an annual assurance of compliance with model school guidelines in order to maintain the designation.
Nueva is the third KHSD continuation school to be named a model school in as many years. Vista Continuation High School was named a model school by the state in 2008 and Vista West Continuation High School in 2007.
