Community Action Partnership of Kern, the county’s largest non-profit agency, has named Mr. Jeremy T. Tobias as Executive Director.

A Bakersfield native with an extensive background in business and local government, Tobias is both prepared and eager to face the challenges ahead of the agency with the current economic downturn. As Executive Director, he will be at the helm of a team of nearly 850 employees, facilitating 20 specialized programs for the low-income population in Kern County.  “I am grateful for the trust that the CAP-K Board has shown in selecting me to help guide this dynamic agency,” stated Tobias. “This is an extremely exciting point in time for CAP-K, as we not only continue with our vital services and programs, but also assist the government with the enactment of the economic recovery plan. There is much work to be done, but I am certain that the CAP-K staff is well prepared to help do our part and get the American people back on their feet.”

Prior to his appointment with CAP-K, Tobias held positions in the fields of public service, community development and business. He has served as Vice President of Community Development at SunCal Companies, as well as Assistant City Manager and Community Development Director for the City of Shafter, and City Manager for the City of Delano. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from San Diego State University and is a graduate of Garces Memorial High School.

This appointment comes at a crucial time for the agency, as the need for CAP-K’s programs steadily increases due to the worsening economy, hitting especially hard in Kern County. Jose Benavides, CAP-K Board of Directors Chair, noted that the search for this candidate was extensive, reaching nationwide and attracting over 150 applicants, with the selection ultimately given to the highly qualified Kern County native. “The Board of Directors believes Jeremy has the experience, energy and vision to lead the agency in its mission to help the less fortunate in Kern County, in what are clearly challenging economic times,” Benavides said.

CAP-K and a network of 1000 other Community Action Agencies nationwide celebrate May as Community Action Month each year. To coincide with these events, CAP-K will be hosting the 8th Annual Humanitarian Awards Banquet on May 15th to be a part of the nationwide effort of honoring those in our community who dedicate themselves to helping to fight poverty.   Mr. Tobias will be opening the event, which will feature Reverend Monsignor Craig Harrison of St. Francis of Assisi Parish as Keynote Speaker, and Todd Karli and Jackie Parks of ABC23 as emcees. For more information please call (661) 336-5236 or email atomlin@capk.org.
