There was a good editorial in the Bakersfield Californian on August 18th. It was cleverly titled It Costs Just Two Bucks to Chuck Real Estate Fraud. It tells of a high profile real estate agent who has been convitcted of fraud, Tony Daniloo serving 7 years. The Real Estate Fraud Unit was funded...

The Korn concert tickets said it started at 5 but it actually started at 4. I bought a $58 ticket to see Trivium and to my surprise I walked in at 5:10 to find out they just finished. I asked for a refund because I only wanted to see that band and they said to take it up with Krab radio. BS! If...

In case if you haven't noticed it, gas prices have actually been going down, despite the upcoming Labor Day holiday.  They're down about $0.50 from a couple of months ago.  Still high though at $2.50 to $2.90 a gallon.  Now if only it would come down to about $1.80.

When I came to Bakersfield almost a year and a half ago, I didn't have any prescriptions or things that were seriously wrong with me (though that's probably up for debate). Now I have asthma, persistent allergies and, as of the last couple of weeks, rashes on my arms, legs, neck, feet, hands...

Everyone seems to want to know where the father is in the picture of all this that is happening. The father was at work when everything happened. He had no say on what happened to his own child. She did all of this while he was working. I understand that CPS is there for the children's...

Haven't been on here for a while. Spent last few days in Memorial Hospital. Had a little plumbing done. Went in for a Angio-plaste, Doc had to do an "Intervention" and inserted a "Stint" while in there, all is OK now. At home taking things easy for a few days. Gotta get...

Here is what happened this past friday. My mother-in-Law and my sister in law got into an arguement, my sister in law gets up and leavs without warning anyone in the house that she is leaving. She has a baby girl that is about 2 years old. Luckily my mother-in-law was here watching the...

Too sick for the homeless shelters. Not sick enough for the hospitals. Too poor or too young for other rehab and skilled nursing programs. What should Bakersfield do about homeless residents who need more care but shouldn't be in the hospitals? This town has a gap in care when it...

I've heard a lot of West Nile virus misconceptions over the past couple of weeks. Hopefully this will help ease some worries and satiate inquiring minds. Myth: West Nile virus only affects the young and elderly. Answer: Busted. The Kern County Department of Public Health held a press...

The anonymous letter that laid out complaints about City Manager Alan Tandy and his promotion process got different reviews on different sides of the issue. The letter, sent to the city council, the miscellaneous civil service board, the city attorney and The Californian, accused Tandy of...

I love this photo that Californian photographer Casey Christie took one afternoon last week. The sky was definitely eerie last weekend, to say the least. A friend joked that it was signally the Apocalypse. And I know it wasn't healthy to be breathing in all that ash. Locusts anyone? ...

Today I went to the Bakersfield Country Music Museum show. They had a very touching ceremony where they gave a guitar to Johnny Burnette Jr. It was a custom built 3/4 size model that Johnny Burnette built for his son. It was made by Moserite in Bakersfield. It was owned by various people through...

As some of you may know already, The Californian recently made some changes to the newspaper.  They removed the TV section, changed the weather section twice (the second one was actually a good one), and have once again failed to preview other high school sports except...

The only time I listened to music was in the car.  I was a hard working young mother.  When I wasn't working I was taking children to and from games, practice, or grandmas house.  Like so many young people, I lived my life in a never ending hurry.  I didn't realize...

I really wanted to see Dwight Yoakam and Raul Malo at Buck's Birthday Bash, but it is sold out. I went by The Crystal Palace 3 times to ask if any extra tickets would go on sale, but nada. Now I see that you are supposed to be able to listen to it on the computer. I tried to log in but am...

I've lived in a lot of places in California: San Diego, Sacramento, Redding, San Ramon and Berkeley. Each of those towns are more beautiful than Bakersfield, I will say. Blue sky, lots of trees, and lots of nature all around. But even though Bakersfield could use a makeover, there are reasons...

Looking for a place to train Andy. Ot could be a swimming pool. It needs a ledge for him to see as he jumps, not a sloping bank.  If you know of a place please let me know about it.  Need a place to get him ready for the upcoming World Championships in AZ.

If it flies, it’s going to be like the man, and the legend of the man, Johnny Cash—part fact and part fiction.  Magic realism, introduced first in Germany via the visual arts, juxtaposes elements of both reality and magic, or fiction, if you will.  And that’s the...

By Publisher Ginger Moorhouse -- Aug. 5, 2007 -- It’s August. It’s hot. And the search for shade is on. Like many people, I try to run a few errands at noon or after work. But most of my time is spent trying to find a leaf of shade in local parking lots. I don’t mind walking a...

So, I arrived bright and early last Sunday for the SPCA cat neuter/spay day. My intention for the day was to be there doing one of the easy peasy jobs, like watching the cats in the recovery area as they came out of their anesthesia to make sure all was well before they went home. Instead, I...
