A few observations with things I don't get about Bakersfield before I get into the rest of my post:
Why is it that most of the ice cream trucks around town do not look kept up or even clean? Is this a cultural thing?
I took my mom into the Kern Canyon a few weeks ago....

I'm here until 7 in the morning updating our online election stories with the latest results from the state and Kern County.
But I've decided to take a nap for the next 8 hours so if you want to check the latest county results go here or for the latest statewide results go here.
Just joking.
I...

No? Then you're behind!
Starbucks will give a free tall cup of brewed coffee on Tuesday to anyone who votes. One cup per customer; it's on the honor system, a company spokeswoman tells us.
Read about the deal here.

It seems like if you wait long enough a study will come out finding something healthy in your junk-food-of-choice.
Case in point: Drinking up to six cups a day of caffeinated or decaffeinated coffee won't shorten your life span, a new study shows. In fact, coffee might even help the heart,...

On my mind this week: the 3rd place. What is the 3rd place, you say? The idea is that everyone has 3 places they "live:" their home, their work, & the THIRD place. What is your third place?
The term the 3rd place comes from a book I have not read called The Great Good Place by Ray...

This is just a little ditty of a tale starting with an early morning train ride from Bako to San Fran to pick up a car. I had not taken a real train ride before, and I do not know if it was because it was early or just because that is the way it is, but there were not a lot of people on...

Dagny's never struck us as a particulary religious place. Some will tell you the quad espresso induces mystical visions, but beyond that, the place just seems too anarchic to attract the Wednesday night Bible study set.
Shows how much we know.
On Monday, Dagny's Coffee Co. took over...

We shared earlier this week that some 7,100 Starbucks shops would be shuttered Tuesday night for barista retraining.

You'll have to for three hours Tuesday night when Starbucks shutters all 7,100 and some U.S. company-owned stores to retrain its baristas.
The coffee purveyor is waiting until 5:30 p.m., so those who need their early-morning fix and mid-day boost don't need to fret.
Can't wait? Stumbled across...

Does it matter how it tastes if it's free?
McDonalds is apparently testing its new espresso drinks in the Bakersfield market by offering free coffee on Mondays. Today it was mocha; next week it's latte. Prices range from $1.99 to $3.29. That's cheaper than Starbucks' prices, which start at $2.65...

What is your favorite coffee shop and why? Since I work downtown, I often visit Dagny's on breaks. My wife likes Starbucks, especially because of the convenience of its drive-thru windows. What do you prefer, small mom and pop store or corporate franchise?

Downtown Bakersfield's popular coffee stop, Dagny's, is devoted to the art of coffee, as well as local art. The walls of the cafe serve as a gallery, hosting a rotation of local artists' works.
Then there's the rosetta latte, perfected by a young barista named Nick Minton. Watch this video by...
