Jackie Parks Talks Parental Justice

Jackie Parks new ABC23 post, "In Search of Parental Justice" raises questions about what parents should do if their kids are involved in a serious wrongdoing in their community.

Excerpt:

So the question that always rolls around in my mind when something like this happens is: what would I do if my kids someday were responsible for something like this? I'm not naive enough to think my children would never do something dumb, just hopefully not this dumb. And no, I would not let the justice system handle it, at least not alone. I think the system would be far too kind.

If you care about your kid's behavior, then you've already raised them with a healthy respect for the rules (this includes laws).

If the parent doesn't care about their kid's behavior, then the kid is already too screwed up by the time the law gets involved.

If my kid gets mixed up with the law, he'd better have a good story, or else the police are going to be the least of his worries.

"...or else the police are going to be the least of his worries."

That's the way it is here, too, Mattloch, and that's the way it was between my parents and me.

If a child of a parent or parents screws up, and the miscreant actions of the child become well known in the community, then it could be tempting for the parent or parents to respond, not to what would be best for the child, but in accordance with the expectation of community members.  In such situations, parents need to focus, not so much appearances, but on what is in the best interest of the child, and what is in the best interest of those immediately impacted by the malfeasant actions of that child.

Thank you Mattloch.  I usually don't agree with you, but on this you are sooooo right!  I remember some years ago when those 14-15 year old girls got into a car with a guy they met online during a slumber party.  They sneaked out, all went joy riding in the fog out on 7th Standard, and hit a power pole or something.  I believe all of the girls were killed, but the driver lived.

I know that it's impossible to watch your kids 24/7, but if those girls had been instilled with a sense of respect for their parents and their parents' rules from early childhood, they would probably be alive today.  I would never have done something like that as a young teen because I'd been taught early on  a) not to get in a car with a stranger and b) that you don't sneak out in the middle of the night.
