I've tried to make a change in the way I blog for the last few weeks. Sometimes I fail at this with spectacular results and go off on whoever is in my line of sight. Ie Apollo Dawn (apologies).
Yesterday I had a meltdown when I saw several blogs which were negative about Obama. It seemed overkill to me.
The way I reacted may have been over the top but it was heart felt and sincere. I was sickened by the whole blogging process and everyone who engaged in it.
My old ex enemy, Sioux of all people, emailed me with some encouraging words and helped me find center again.
I think all of us "old time bloggers" are sick of the dissension and negativity we find on the blogs lately. It would be easy to blame the newcomers but that's not the truth either. One things for sure, no one side is to blame any more than the other. And neither side can make a change for the better, alone.
What we all need to do is examine our own part in spreading the dissension on this blog site and do what we can to stop it. We need to remember that behind those avatars are real people with real feelings.
Use qualitative terms when dealing with issues. Some...In my opinion....mostly.....etc.
I think one of the reasons we fail to treat each other with respect is because we can't feel any commonality. We can't get past our political/religious differences to see the person behind the comments.
In an effort to get to know each other better, I want to open this blog to each of you so you can share as much or as little as you feel comfortable doing. Or nothing at all.
Me first.
The part of my house that I love the best is actually on the outside of the house, our back patio, where I spend 90% of my leisure time. I have a 20 year old porch swing which is large enough to lie down on with room to spare. I sit, recline or lie on this porch swing and read every evening.
There's a honey locust tree in the back yard which is a bird magnet. It's so peaceful and life affirming to watch this tree leaf out and turn colors as the months go by.

I'm making a pledge to myself that I won't behave to him (or her) in the manner in which Obama has been treated by the far right since he's been elected.
I promise that I will never stoop that low.
The president is the leader of our country. He was elected by a majority of the people. Out of respect for that majority decision I wouldn't try to derail the president based on silly innuendos.
Because I respect this country and its freedoms, I won't distract the future president from doing the job that he was elected to do by spreading malicious lies.
I'm better than that!
From the good news network.
A 20/20 news special recently confirmed that we have a large measure of control over our own levels of happiness -- at least 40 percent within our own control, according to researchers interviewed. Only 10 percent is circumstantial and about 40 to 50 percent is genetic. Most interesting is the notion that you can change your brain -- and your circumstances -- if you are committed to being happy. Here are four ways to get started.
- Meditate to change brain patterns
- Focus on the positive
- Build Rewarding Relationships
- Find your flow
Meditate: Neuroscience researchers report that our brains are just waiting to be transformed.
If you only sit quietyly for 30 minutes a day your brain will show noticeable changes in two weeks. If you are worried that you don't have 30 minutes to spare, try 10 minutes. Even sitting quietly for a short time will make a big difference. The point is, we need to rejuvenate ourselves. Meditation is one way to revitalize our energy.
Focus on the positive.
Have you heard the saying, “what you focus on expands?” It’s not just a bunch of fluff. Dr. Richard Davidson, a researcher at the University of Wisconsin studied Monks who dedicate their life to focusing on positive thoughts of compassion and kindness. Davidson said the monks’ happiness is “off the charts.”
Build rewarding relationships
Relationships are the biggest source of happiness at work and outside of work. One reason Denmark is the happiest place in the world is because their focus is on community. Ninety-two percent of Danes belong to some kind of a social club and guess what? The government pays for it! That’s a big contrast to most Americans I know who make excuses and say they are too busy to join in extra activities.
Relationships are what matter at work too. One of the people profiled on the 20/20 show was Sean Aiken, a guy who decided to try as many jobs as he could to find his bliss. Sean realized after working 52 jobs in 52 weeks, trying everything from dairy farming to stock trading, that it is not the work that matters; it’s who you work with that matters
Find your Flow
Some people find their flow in their life calling, others find it in some sort of activity. The flow is something you feel when you are totally absorbed and happy with the present moment.
I believe I have found my calling, and I’m pretty much in the flow while coaching, speaking or training. I’ve been meditating and studying the effect of positive thought for the last five years, but something was still missing. I finally figured it out. It was putting more fun into my life…things I like to do that have absolutely nothing to do with business.
At the end of 2007 I signed up for dance lessons. That’s right, I’m taking Cha Cha Cha and Salsa. The instructor, Alex, is someone I just love to have in my life so this fills the relationship bill too. I decided to take some ice skating lessons, too. Every time I visited a big city I saw people skating in the parks, I always wished I could join them. This year I decided to turn that longing into reality.
See? We really do have some control over our own happiness. We just have to remember that happiness isn’t about arriving at the destination it’s about enjoying the journey.

Ford surprises with $1B profit; sees profit in 2011
DEARBORN, Mich. – Ford, the only Detroit automaker to dodge direct government aid and bankruptcy court, surprised investors with net income of nearly $1 billion in the third quarter and forecast a "solidly profitable" 2011.
The automaker said Monday earnings were fueled by U.S. market share gains, cost cuts and the Cash for Clunkers program, which drew flocks of buyers to showrooms this summer. Ford's shares rose 68 cents, or 9.8 percent, to $7.68 in morning trading.
The latest results signal that Ford's turnaround is on more solid ground. The company lost more than $14.6 billion last year and hasn't posted a full-year profit since 2005. While it made a profit in the second quarter, that was mainly due to debt reductions that cut its interest payments.
The earnings came despite an $800 million revenue drop. But Ford said it cut costs by $1 billion during the quarter, accomplished through layoffs in North America and Europe, reduced pension and retiree health care costs and improvements in productivity and product development.
Chief financial officer Lewis Booth said the company took in $1.3 billion more than it spent in the quarter, an improvement over its $1 billion cash burn in the second quarter.
"That's a huge deal," Booth said.
Ford's plan to create demand and get better prices for its products, coupled with cost cuts, gave the company confidence that it will make money in 2011, Booth said.
But Ford still faces obstacles in its turnaround. Last week, workers overwhelmingly rejected an agreement with the United Auto Workers that would have brought Ford's labor costs in line with rivals General Motors Corp. and Chrysler LLC. Workers objected to clauses limiting their right to strike and freezing entry-level wages, and felt the company was healthy enough and didn't need further concessions.
The rejected deal also would have changed rules so skilled tradesmen such as electricians and pipefitters work in teams and perform more than one task.
Rejection of the deal isn't likely to place Ford at an immediate cost disadvantage to its crosstown rivals because savings from the concessions are longer-term, said Gary Chaison, a professor of labor relations at Clark University in Worcester, Mass. Neither the company nor the UAW has released any cost savings numbers.
The third-quarter profit makes it extremely unlikely that the company will push to head back to the bargaining table before the current UAW contract expires in the fall of 2011, and union leaders also are unlikely to take another deal to the membership, Chaison said.
"I think the company has no credibility asking for concessions now, and I think the leadership is quite embarrased for making a case for concessions," he said.
It also won buyers; the fuel-efficient Ford Focus sedan and Ford Escape, a small SUV, were among the top five sellers under clunkers. Ford sales climbed 17 percent in August thanks to the program.
Ford also has benefited from consumer goodwill after it declined government bailout money and didn't go into bankruptcy over the summer as GM and Chrysler did. Ford grabbed sales from its rivals, posting the largest increase in market share of any automaker in September. Ford expects an overall gain in U.S. market share in 2009, a feat it hasn't accomplished since 1995.
The ugly part is my opinion. It looks like a Mississippi steamboat on steroids. So top heavy that I'd think twice before booking a passage.
Here's the story.
AP - Helsinki
It's five times bigger than the Titanic, has seven neighborhoods, an ice rink, a golf course and a 750 seat outdoor amphitheater. The world's largest cruise ship is finally finished and Friday it began gliding toward it's home port in Florida.
The Oasis of the seas will meet its first obstacle today when it exits the Baltic Sea and must squeeze under the Great Belt Bridge, which is just 1 foot taller than the ship - even after it's telescopic smokestacks are lowered.
To be on the safe side the ship - which rises about 20 stories high- will speed up so that it sinks deep into the water when it passes below the span.
Travel guide writer Arthur Frommer has railed against the Oasis which he calls a "floating resort" suggesting that voyages on such huge vessels are a "dumbing down of the cruise experience."
Oasis of the Seas is 40% larger than the next biggest ship. It has 2,700 cabins and can accommodate 6,300 passengers and 2,100 crew members.
The enormous ship features "neighborhoods" - parks, squares and areas with special themes. One of them will be a tropical environment, including palm trees and vines among the total 12,000 plants on board.
In the stern, a 750 seat outdoor theater doubles as a swimming pool by day and an ocean front theater by night. The pool has a diving tower with spring boards and two 33 foot high platforms. And indoor theater seats, 1,300 guests.
The liner features 1,600 square foot luxury suites with balconies overlooking the sea of promenades.
It also has four swimming pools, volleyball and basketball courts and a youth zone with theme parks and nurseries for children.
It would be X rated.
Children wouldn't be allowed to see it. Even though they hear those stories every Sunday at church.
The incestuous behavior of Lot and his Daughters, alone, would earn the movie a XXX rating.
And the image of fire and brimstone which God reined upon Sodom and Gomorrah would scare them to death.
The story of the flood would be equally scary and confusing to them. for example "Is God killing all the animals and little kids too? Why? They didn't do anything!"
Then there's the story of Abraham sacrificing his son Issac, whooeee! Too much for little ears.
Anyone who loves children would, naturally, refuse to let them see this movie.

(CNN) - President Barack Obama may have one less problem to worry about.
A federal judge on Thursday dismissed a lawsuit that claimed Obama is ineligible to be president because he isn't a bona fide U.S. citizen.
The lawsuit represented the claim by the so-called "birthers" movement that Obama was not born in Hawaii - despite a birth certificate to the contrary - or that if he was, his citizenship was invalidated by living overseas as a child.
In a 30-page ruling, U.S. District Judge David O. Carter of California said his court lacked the jurisdiction to rule on a case intended to unseat a sitting president.
Carter's ruling said the plaintiffs were trying to persuade him to "disregard the constitutional procedures in place for the removal of a sitting president."
"The process for removal of a sitting president - removal for any reason - is within the province of Congress, not the courts," the ruling said.
Carter's ruling also noted that the plaintiffs "have attacked the judiciary, including every prior court that has dismissed their claim, as unpatriotic and even treasonous for refusing to grant their requests and for adhering to the terms of the Constitution."
"Respecting the constitutional role and jurisdiction of this court is not unpatriotic," the ruling said. "Quite the contrary, this court considers commitment to that constitutional role to be the ultimate reflection of patriotism."

Jobs outlook brightens
National Association for Business Economics says more U.S. firms are planning to hire and increase investment in the next six months.
By Ben Rooney, CNNMoney.com staff reporter
October 26, 2009: 7:10 AM ET
NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- In another sign of economic recovery, U.S. companies are planning to hire and invest more in the near future, according to a survey released Monday.
The National Association for Business Economics said the number of employers planning to hire workers over the next six months exceeded the number expecting job cuts for the first time since the recession began in December 2007.
The survey of 78 NABE members also showed more companies increased capital spending during the third quarter of 2009 than cut spending. It was the first time that happened since October 2008.
"NABE's October 2009 Industry Survey provides new evidence that the U.S. recovery is underway," said William Strauss, a senior economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago.
NABE said job losses "appear to be slowly abating" with the percentage of firms cutting payrolls falling to 31% in the quarter from 36%. The percentage of firms adding jobs doubled from an all-time low of 6% to 12% in October.
Unemployment stands at a 26-year high of 9.8% in the United States. Economists surveyed by Briefing.com expect another 175,000 jobs were lost in October after employers shed 263,000 jobs in September.
Companies indicated that material costs continued to rise in the third quarter. But prices have also increased, which has allowed profits to improve, Strauss noted.
Credit conditions improved slightly, according to the survey, although many businesses reported that borrowing costs remain high.
NABE said all 78 members now expect U.S. gross domestic product, the broadest measure of economic activity, to be positive in 2010. A majority of respondents expect GDP to expand between 1% and 3% next year.
The government is expected to report Thursday that third-quarter gross domestic product grew at an annual rate of 3.2%, according to economists surveyed by Briefing.com. In the second quarter, GDP shrank at a 0.7% rate.
Meteorite-like object falls in Latvia

(CNN) -- A meteorite-like object has created a crater after landing near a farm in northern Latvia, the nation's official news agency reported.
The object fell Sunday in Mazsalaca, leaving a hole of about 65 feet (20 meters) wide and 32 feet (10 meters) deep, Latvian emergency officials told the LETA news agency.
A fire was reported in the grassy area where it landed, but there were no known injuries, LETA said.
Scientists and armed forces from the northern European nation will inspect the crater and conduct an investigation.

Oslo
It's the moment most Norwegian neighbors have been waiting for-the release of official records showing the annual income and overall wealth of nearly every taxpayer in the Scandinavian country.
In a move that would be unthinkable elsewhere, tax authorities in Norway have issued the "skatteliste," or "tax list," for 2008 to the media under a law designed to uphold the country's tradition of transparency.
The tax list stirs up a Media frenzy with splashy headlines revealing oil-rich Norway's wealthiest man, woman and celebrity couple.
The data shows that former cross-country skiing great Bjoern Daehile who has eight Olympic gold medals, also has plenty of cash- 29.3 kroner ($5.4 million)
Actress Liv Ullmann earned $17,300 in Norway and has a wealth of $2.5 million. Income earned or kept abroad is not included.
Pioneering women's long distance runner, Grete Waitz, a nine-time NY City Marathon champion earned $13,500 in Norway and has a wealth of $90,000.
So who's Norway's richest man? Tobacco mogul Johan Henrik Andersen, worth $2 billion.
Members of the royal family are not on the list because they don't pay taxes.
So, what do you think? How would you feel if your ex wife, next door neighbor or blogging foe knew what you earned?
Most pet owners would leap into action for an injured pet, even if it meant risking dog breath by going mouth to mouth.
58% of pet owners (63% of dog owners and 53% of cat owners) would be at least somewhat likely to perform CPR on their pet in the event of a medical emergency.
Just 20% of pet owners have a pet first aid kit and only 54% have a fire evacuation plan for their pets.
The poll also found that owners also create unsafe situations by feeding bones and scraps from the table to their pets. 30% of dog owners and 22% of cat owners feed their pets from the table.
62% of dog owners and 33% of cat owners let their pets ride in the car unrestrained. And 11% of owners leave their pets unattended in a car or truck.
Women are more likely to perform CPR on their pets than men are 65% to 50% the poll showed. GO LADIES!!
So how about you? Would you go mouth to snout to help your pet?
Before you get your torches and start storming Sacramento let me explain.
This is not a permanent tax. It's more like a loan. Taxes withheld from salaries will increase by 10% starting in November. However, that same amount will be refunded by the California State Franchise Tax Board when you file in a year from now in April.
If you don't want to give California an interest free loan, here's what you do.
Go to your payroll clerk and have her/him change your withholding to withhold 10% less from your weekly or monthly check. You will need to fill out a new W-2. That will counter what the State Legislators are trying to do to you.
I hope I explained this well enough so you can understand it. My husband looked like a deer in headlights when I explained it to him.
Sen. Al Franken (D-MN) proposed an amendment to the 2010 Defense Appropriations bill that would withhold defense contracts from companies like KBR “if they restrict their employees from taking workplace sexual assault, battery and discrimination cases to court.”
It passed, 68 YEAs, 30 NAYs, 2 NOT VOTING.
Those voting no

For all you conservatives on the blog who have been upset that Bush didn't put regulations on the bailout money he gave to 21 banks last fall, GOOD NEWS. Obama is holding the bank's CEOs feet to the fire.
Obama say's "The Party's Over".
And, for those of you who think that the business world should be left to regulate themselves, consider this.
These CEO's would have been out on the street if it hadn't been for the money We gave them. They mismanaged the funds from their stockholders by taking huge risks but still want to compensate themselves with obscene salaries and bonuses.
We will probably never get all the bailout money Bush awarded these greedy idiots but until we do see a respectable portion of it returned to the taxpayers, these CEO's need to adjust their thinking and put the companies debt to the taxpayers and the profits of the stockholders first and their own salaries and benefits second.
How did these CEO's get so out of touch with reality? Elizabeth Warren explained it on this morning's Morning Joe as a combination of extreme arrogance and coziness. The arrogance comes from the CEO's surety that they are worth the kings ransoms they demand, even while driving their companies into bankruptcies through their own greed and risky behavior. The coziness is the fact that these bank CEO's sit on the boards of each others companies and, as board members, award each other these fabulous salaries. It's called cronyism.
Until the salaries and compensations of CEOs and top executives are given to the stockholders (the real owners of the companies) to decide on this practice will continue.
Gor now, the CASH portion of their salaries will be cut 90%. They will receive 10% of their salaries in cash and 40% in STOCK. LOL
