This comes from my September issue of Discover magazine

Save the Date

September 1-2    "International Bognor Birdman"   Bognor-Regis, England

Men, both naked and in Mary Poppins costumes, fling themselves from an elevated pier in human powered flying machines for a $50,000 purse and a change to smash the current distance record of 293 feet.

September 2   "Miss Klingon Empire Beauty Pageant"  Atlanta, GA

Winner is crowned with a "fabulous"  eight-inch tall rhinestone and sterling silver tiara.  Kelsey Grammer is not eligible to compete.

September 2   "Great British Duck Race"  London, England

In  a sad bid to break a 2001 Guiness World Record set in Sinapore, the Brits will attempt to regain imperial dominance by sending 165,000 rubber ducks down the Thames.

September 5-7  "Air Guitar World Championships"  Oulu, Finland

Presumable, they're still into heavy metal there.

September 28-29  "Beef-A-Rama  Minocqua, WI

Sixty dripping roasts totaling more than 1,200 pounds of meat are paraded through the streets of a small town, with $50 to the winner of the "for the Love of Beef" poetry contest.

September 29 "Roadkill Cookoff"   Marlinton, WV

Born a few years ago, when West Virginia finally legalized its inhabitants' widespread method of hunting and gethering.  Down-home dishes include Thumber Meets Bumper, Asleep at the Wheel Squeal, One Ton Wonton, Rigor Mortis Bear Stew, Tire Tread Tortillas and Deer on a Stick.

September 27-30  "18th Annual World Chicken Festival"   London, KY

A quarter of a million people descend on the home of the first  KFC to see, among other things, the 10.5 foot-wide "World's Largest Skillet" cook 600 chicken quarters at once.  Also, a Colonel Sanders lookalike contest.
