I seldom read your columns because I find them predictable, poorly researched and, more often than not, boring. Your mean spirited column in today's paper about the weight problems in the KCSD is typical of your usual lack of research. It's incredible that one encounter with an overwight cop is all the "research" you needed to formulate a opinion worthy of a column. Did you even pause to consider how much hurt you are going to inflict on a lot of decent, hardworking deputies whose job it is to protect you. In your eagerness to do a "pseudo" investigative piece you have probably done more to hurt morale in an overworked law enforcement department that anyone has in years. You say that a "er, rotund, um, large -- who am I kidding he was HUGE" (funny words indeed) sheriffs deputy had problems getting out of his patrol car. I assume that in researching your column you put on the 25 pound vest and the 20 pound belt and leaped out of a patrol car yourself. Did you look at yourself in the mirror with that vest and belt on. It adds at least 40 pounds to your image. At one point in your column you argue that all deputies should be able to run, lift, jump, tackle, climb and drag according to a standard . If the standard for doing all of the above tasks is based on a physically fit man wouldn't that by the standards own criteria eliminate all women, small men and old men from becomming officers. Which brings to mind the highway patrol officer who lost his legs in the line of duty. He has recently gone back to work. Shouldn't he be eliminated from the force because he can't meet your standards. I guess you're unaware, Lois, that some deputies are seldom called to sites that require physicality. They are the ones who go to the "ugly" calls which require them to be sensitive, not athletic. The calls where a child has been abused or a woman has been raped and beaten by a man. These disturbing calls are answered by senior deputies, day after day. Sometimes for 15 hour shifts. These are the calls that the deputy can't forget when he goes home. They're the calls that encourage him to seek solace in food. I know a wonderful deputy. He's kind, funny, smart and BIG. He couldn't easily break a 200 pound man in two. He's the deputy I want to respond if I'm ever in trouble. I think most people give their jobs all they have. Like you Lois. Your columns are your meat and potatoes. Wouldn't it be counterproductive to your morale and abiltiy to do your job if TBC threated to make you type 150 wpm or send you packing. .

Ben Batey has scheduled more debate on the controversial posters after receiving additional comments and complaints from the public. Can the KHSD trustee be having a change of heart?
