The same tom cat who sired a litter of feral kittens born to an abandoned mother cat last spring. My husband has made 4 trips to Mt Vernon carrying the kittens, mother cat and half grown kittens to the pound. It broke my heart to do it, but we had no choice. The tom goes unscathed and unfettered back home until the next time he decides to invade our patio. The next time he shows up to attack our cats and spray our furniture we'll trap him and give him a one way ticket to Mt Vernon. Cost of Bud's injuries............... $620 plus his pain and suffering. Now he wants me to hold and scratch him 24/7 which is OK, but he smells awful. Hallelujah, he's finally falling to sleep.
When he finally got done putting the fire out, he sat down to catch his breath and rest. A photographer from the Charlotte, North Carolina newspaper noticed her in the distance looking at the fireman. He saw her walking straight toward the fireman and wondered what she was going to do. As he raised his camera, she came up to the tired man who had saved her life and the lives of her babies and kissed him just as the photographer snapped this photograph.
Cruelty
Man is subject to innumerable pains and sorrows by the very condition of humanity, and yet, as if nature had not sown evils enough in life, we are continually adding grief to grief and aggravating the common calamity by our cruel treatment of one another. One of the ill effects of cruelty is that it makes the bystanders cruel. Detested sport, That owes its pleasures to another's pain. If it were absolutely necessary to choose, I would rather be guilty of an immoral act than of a cruel one. The difference between coarse and refined abuse is the difference between being bruised by a club and wounded by a poisoned arrow.
Compassion Three passions have governed my life: We who lived in concentration camps can remember the men who walked through the huts comforting others, giving away their last piece of bread. They may have been few in number, but they offer sufficient proof that everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms -- to choose one's attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one's own way. Viktor Frankl Love, compassion, and concern for others are real sources of happiness. With these in abundance, you will not be disturbed by even the most uncomfortable circumstances. If you nurse hatred, however, you will not be happy even in the lap of luxury. Thus, if we really want happiness, we must widen the sphere of love. This is both religious thinking and basic common sense. The essence of love and compassion is understanding, the ability to recognize the physical, material, and psychological suffering of others, to put ourselves "inside the skin" of the other. We "go inside" their body, feelings, and mental formations, and witness for ourselves their suffering. Shallow observation as an outsider is not enough to see their suffering. We must become one with the subject of our observation. When we are in contact with another's suffering, a feeling of compassion is born in us. Compassion means, literally, "to suffer with."
