The Modesto Nuts (13-6) defeated the Blaze (6-13) in a 14-inning marathon by a score of 4-3 Tuesday at Sam Lynn Ballpark to take the first of a three game series. The Nuts’ Jeffrey Cunningham crushed a solo homer over the left field wall off Blaze reliever Ryan Tatusko (0-1) in the top of the 14th inning to end the 3-½ hour deadlock that saw both teams combine for a total of 19 hits. Bakersfield would answer back in the second and third innings to take the lead 3-2, with three runs on three singles and a Mitchell Moreland two-run homer, his fourth of the season. Blaze starter Michael Kirkman (1-1), would go six innings allowing 6H, and 2 ER, while walking one and fanning four of the 27 batters he faced. Relievers Ryan Falco, and Zach Phillips would combine for 6 Ks, giving up only 2H, and allowing no earned runs keeping the game tied at three apiece into inning 11. Nuts Starter Cory Riordan (0-2) gave up 2 ER on 6H including Mitchell’s two-run homer, striking out two and walking three in 5 IP. Reliever Craig Baker would enter the game in the bottom of inning fourteen to preserve the lead and post his eighth save of the season. Mitchell Moreland, 3-for-5, had a solo home run, his fourth the season, and two singles. Davis Stoneburner doubled and singled twice going 3-for-6. The series continues with game two at home against the Modesto Nuts on April 29. First pitch is scheduled for 7:15 p.m. It will be a Must Win Wednesday. If the Blaze don’t win, everyone gets a free General Admission ticket to a future game. What’s Burning: The loss extends a three-game Blaze losing streak…Moreland leads the Blaze in doubles with seven and is tied for first in the Cal League. The Stockton Ports (4-14) beat the Blaze (6-12) by a score of 6-3 in Sunday’s matinee at Sam Lynn Ballpark to split the four game series at two games apiece. For the second time in as many games the Blaze would score first on an Engel Beltre two-run homer to right-center, giving the Blaze a 2-0 advantage in the fourth. Once again the Bakersfield would be forced to go deep into the bullpen, as the Ports would light up the Blaze in the top of the sixth. Blaze starter Blake Beavan (0-3), like Main in game three, cruised through five innings allowing only one hit, then drove into a brick wall allowing six runs on five hits in the sixth. Beavan was given the hook after 5.1 innings with 4 ER. Relievers Corey Young, Zach Phillips (1 IP, 3 SO), and Evan Reed (1 IP, 1 SO) allowed no earned runs to complete the game and the series. Ports Starter Craig Italiano (1-2) gave up only 2 ER on 6H, fanning six and walking only two in 6 IP. Reliever Jon Hunton posted his second save of the season. Engel Beltre, 3-for-5, had a solo home run, his first of the season, a double and a single. Joey Butler also homered for the first time, doubled and singled going 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, falling a triple shy of the cycle. The Blaze will have Monday off before starting a three game series at home against the Modesto Nuts on April 27. First pitch is scheduled for 7:15 p.m. It will be Taco Tuesday $1.50 Tacos and $1.50 Tecate beers. What’s Burning: Blaze Pitcher Michael Main leads the Cal in earned runs with 19 and an ERA of 11.66. The Stockton Ports (3-14) went on a hitting spree and beat the Blaze (6-11) by a score of 13-2 Saturday to take game three of a four game set at Sam Lynn Ballpark. The Blaze took an early lead on Mitchell Moreland to-run homer, his third of the season in the bottom of the first. From there it was all Stockton as they pounded the Blaze pitching staff for a total of 16 hits. Blaze starter Michael Main (0-3) was cruising with what looked to his best outing in four starts this season allowing 1 hit, 1 walk, and 2 strikeouts in 4 innings. But it would begin to come undone. After scoring three in the fifth to take a 3-2 lead, Stockton torched the Blaze in the 6th inning scoring eight runs. Blaze right-handed reliever Ryan Tatusko gave up seven runs on five hits, two walks, and two wild pitches in just two-thirds of an inning before being replaced by RHP Tanner Roark who allowed a triple that scored two of Tatusko’s runners and one of his own. Adelberto Flores was brought in after Roark was ejected from the game on a wild pitch that hit Jermaine Mitchell, surrendering two runs in two innings. Ports Starter Carlos Hernandez (1-2) gave up only 2 ER on 4H, fanning six and walking only three in 5.1 IP. Reliever Derrick Gordon (3 IP, 2H, 3 SO) completed the solid Ports pitching performance that allowed a combined total of 6 hits in the game, posting his first save of the season. Bakersfield’s Mitch Moreland carried the offense with a homer, double and single. Renny Osuna singled and doubled. The Ports and Blaze will play the finale of their four-game series on Sunday at Sam Lynn Ballpark. The Blaze (6-10) received a solid pitching performance beating the Stockton Ports (2-13) 4-2 Friday to take game a two game lead of a four game series at Sam Lynn Ballpark. Blaze pitching would hold the Ports to only 6 hits and two runs for the game. Starter Tim Murphy (2-2) gave up only 2 ER on 6H, fanning two and walking only one in six innings. Although Murphy did not dominate, he did get his first winning start after three rough appearances to open the season. Relievers Ryan Falcon (2 IP, 1BB, 2 SO) and Brennan Garr (1 IP, 1 BB, 1SV) completed the solid pitching performance, shutting down Stockton’s offense in the final innings. Matt Lawson would open the scoring with a solo homer in the bottom of the first; his fourth on the year and Mitchell Moreland hit his sixth two-bagger of the season. Matthew Martz The Blaze (5-10) rallied in the seventh inning to beat the Stockton Ports (2-12) 6-5 Thursday to take game one of a four game series at Sam Lynn Ballpark. Down by two runs in the bottom of the seventh with two outs and no one on, Bakersfield strung together a Mitch Moreland single, a Mauro Gomez walk, and back-to-back doubles by Tim Smith and Ian Gac to score three runs. Starter Kennil Gomez gave up 4 ER on 3H including 1HR fanning eight and walking five in five innings. Timothy Smith hit his second homer of the season and singled earlier in the contest, and Matt Lawson added his third home run and picked up 1RBI. Mauro Gomez was 3 for 3. LF Timothy Smith leads Bakersfield with a .422 AVG. Holland arrived in Texas on Saturday and made his Major League debut on 04.22.09, pitching 2 1/3 shutout innings. Derek Holland played for the Blaze in 2008 and went 3-1, 3.19 with a 37/5 K/BB in 31 innings and 20 hits allowed. Promoted then to Frisco in the Texas Leagues where he had a combined line: 13-1, 2.36, 150/38 K/BB in 145 innings, 107 hits allowed, just 3 homers. Visalia starter Patrick McAnaney (2-0) who had not given up any home runs this season struggled early in the game giving up 5 H, 3ER, in five innings with 3BB and 3 K’s including a one-run homerun from Mauro Gomez his fourth on the season as Bakersfield opened the scoring for the first time in eight games. In a see-saw contest the Blaze out hit the Rawhide 12 to 9 with offensive production from Mitch Moreland (1H, 1HR, 1RBI) Matthew Lawson (3H, 1DBL, 2RBI) and Mauro Gomez (3H, 1DBL 1HR, 6RBI) who went 5 for 6 including a two-run game tying homer in the eighth. The Blaze return home to begin a four game series tonight at 7:15 p.m. against last place Stockton Ports (1-12) at Sam Lynn Ballpark. By Matthew Martz The Bakersfield Blaze (3-10) were defeated by the Visalia Rawhide (12-1) in the second game of a three game series on Tuesday night at Recreation Park in Visalia, 5-2. Blaze starter 6’7” RHP Blake Beaven (0-1) gave up 8 H, 5R in five innings while fanning six. The Rawhide came out swinging striking in the first and third innings to take a two run lead. Bakersfield’s Mitch Moreland doubled (5) on a fly ball to center in the top of the fourth and would later score on an RBI single from Jonathan Greene (2 for 3) his seventh of the season to trim Visalia’s lead to one. Visalia SP Jarrod Parker (1-0) who had not given up any earned runs this season gave up 5 H, 1R, in five innings with two strikeouts. William Spottiswood posted his first save of the season for the Rawhide. Visalia would score three runs in the fifth on a Sean Coughlin two-run homer to left center field extending the their lead 5-1. The Blaze would get one more on an Ian Gac sacrifice RBI (6) fly deep to left field in the eighth to close the gap 5-2. The Blaze will play the final game of the three game series against Visalia Apr. 22 1:05 p.m. What's burning: The Blaze have been outscored 41-22 in their last seven games. Blaze SP Michael Main (0-2) would walk five, give up three hits including a two-run homer to Sean Coughlin, and allow seven runs in just two innings as Visalia led 7-0 going into the third. The Blaze would score five runs in the top of the fourth on hits from Osuna, Beltre, Lawson and a two-run double from Mitchell Moreland that would bring the Blaze within two. Visalia would add two more in the sixth as the Bakersfield would come up short in the top of the seventh with two runs of their own including a one-run double from Ian Gac, his second of the season. SP Tom Layne (1-0) would pick up the win for Visalia as he allowed only one hit in two innings and Jeff Dietz would post his fourth save of 2009. Matt Martz The Lake Elsinore Storm (4-6) defeated the Bakersfield Blaze (3-7), 5-2 on Saturday night to take game three of a four game series in front of a home crowd of 1,572 at Sam Lynn Ballpark. Mitch Moreland put Bakersfield on the board with a one-run shot up the middle in the bottom of the first inning posting his first RBI of the season to give Bakersfield an early 1-0 lead. Lake Elsinore countered with a pair of hits in both the fourth and fifth innings to take the lead 4-1. The Blaze mounted their best opportunity in bottom of the sixth when third baseman Jonathan Greene (1-4) rocketed a shot off the right field wall that would load the bases with one out. Center fielder Engel Beltre (2-5) would pop up to third ending the inning leaving three men stranded. Matt Martz Bakersfield starter Kennil Gomez (1-1) gave up one run on six hits, three walks, and had five strikeouts over five innings. Storm starter Wynn Pelzer (1-0) got his first win if the season giving up seven hits,one earned run with five strikeouts over five innings. Reliever Bryan Oland picked up his second save of the season for the Storm. Blaze shortstop Davis Stoneburner committed four errors in Saturday nights game, tying 1999 Blaze third baseman Tony Turcato for the most errors in one game by a single player. RANGERS ROUNDUP The Texas Rangers have purchased the contract of former Bakersfield Blaze LHP Derek Holland from Oklahoma City. He will work, for now, out of the bullpen. Holland was 3-1 and had a 3.19 ERA for Bakersfield. After losing their first three games of the 2009 season, the Bakersfield Blaze are now riding a three game winning streak. The Blaze record improved their record to .500 as they belted 19 hits in a 10-6 win at San Jose Tuesday night. The Blaze will wrap up their series at San Jose tonight, and then it's back to Bakersfield for their home opener on Thursday against the (1-5) Lake Elsinore Storm. The Storm had lost their first five straight but are coming of a 9-0 win over Cal South Division leader High Desert on Tuesday night at The Diamond. Scheduled to pitch for the Blaze on Opening Day is 20-year-old RHP Michael Main. Main’s last as a starter was April 10 in a 5-6 loss to the Modesto Nuts. Main has a 5.79 ERA, with 6 SO and 2 BB, 4 H, and 3 ER in 4.2 innings. The Blaze will play four games series against the Storm at Sam Lynn Ballpark starting with tomorrow’s opener before heading out to play a three game series in Visalia next week.
