The $10 Trillion Man?

Several years ago I predicted that the National Debt would reach $10 trillion by the time President Bush left office. For a short period (thanks to the housing bubble), it looked like the deficit would be less than I projected.

Now that the housing bust is hitting government revenues, it looks like the $10 trillion projection will be close.

From MarketWatch: Budget deficit widens to [February] record $175.6 billion

The federal government deficit widened to a record $175.6 billion in February, in part because of the economic slowdown and in part because of the extra day in February this year that allowed the government to send out more tax refunds and more benefit checks, the Treasury Department reported Wednesday.
The current National debt is $9.397 trillion (see TreasuryDirect) as of March 10, 2008. That leaves the debt about $603 billion short of my projection with only 10.5 months to go. It will be close!

It is important to understand that the White House and CBO project the "unified budget deficit", not the General Fund deficit. Bush is responsible for the General Fund, and it's the General Fund deficit with some adjustments that will hit the National Debt. From MarketWatch:
For the entire year, the White House expects a budget deficit of $410 billion. The CBO expects a deficit of $396 billion.
Add about $200 billion to get the Bush General Fund deficit.

Vote John McBUSH if you want more of the same.

Well, the way to fix this is to cut taxes.  See, when you take in less money, you have more money to spend.  Just imagine how much money the government would have if they stopped collecting taxes all together.

Wow [edited to read:] Bakersfield Bubble, you are smart. What are doing here in a hick town like Bakersfield? You should be running the country.

Well, OldBlue, he certainly couldn't do worse....

Sorry, notwithstanding the occasional lapse in judgment, I don't do politics anymore.  I've discovered that music unites/politics divide.

We can't afford to educate our young appropriately or up the nutritional levels of school lunches or provide better medical care, but...he can fund a war.  I'd say Bush has made his priorities known and fiscal conservatism isn't one of them.  TRILLIONS of dollar later and Al Queda is still out there (so much for catching those responsible for 9/11).  Seven years... and the objective was not only NOT accomplished, but pushed completely to the back burner.  TRILLIONS of dollars spent in a land far away, under the guise of domestic security,...did it ever dawn on the administration (or anyone else, for that matter) that those TRILLIONS of dollars may have been put to better use defending our country on this side of the Atlantic?  I guarantee we could have better screening at airports, more fire and police resources, better disaster response teams, tighter immigration policies that would be enforced by paid agents, better screening at our ports,...the list goes on and on.  But, nope...we're defending some sand in Iraq from an enemy that posed no threat to Americans (on American soil), trying to give them a democracy they don't really want, and solve two thousand years of strife.  *thumbs up*

possummomma - Could not have said it any better. That has been my position for some time. Take care of business her in America first!

OldBlue and Bakersfield Bubble, do I really need to put you guys in time out for calling names?  Everyone has their chosen handle here--it's not that hard to call people by them.  Seriously.  <shaking head>

I'm tellin' ya.  You guys are just as clever as a toilet lever with that McBush tripe.  Lets play with Obama's name a bit and listen to the howls.

"Let's," Nancy?  Like that hasn't been going on for months?

Just what I was thinking RF.  Yet it would be special if we played nice, but it comes down to the questions of ,who goes first, and who forgets the past blunders .

I think the name game has been deflected quite adequately by Obama.

Of course, he now has to deflect that whole "the only reason he's a candidate is because he's black" thing. Yeah, as Obama put it, being black and named Hussein has always been an advantage in American politics. LOL

Of course....Geraldine, instead of backing off, decided to deride herself by saying the only reason she was a candidate was because she was a woman. There is a difference though, nobody voted for her.

And of course, the fact that Hillary is married to Bill, had no possible bearing on her candidacy. Same difference.
