Do you charge an "annoyance tax" at yard sales?

Californian columnist Valerie Schultz came clean on something she did while holding a recent garage sale: She slapped an "annoyance tax" on people who, well, annoyed her.

It's safe to say she's not alone in this regard, whether the irritation from shoppers comes from a person's politics (Valerie's case), behavior, attitude or whatever. I like that she's come up with a catchy phrase for the practice.

What do you think? Have you ever charged an "annoyance tax" at your yard sales? If so, why?

I don't hold yard sales, but I've certainly added a PITA charge to people in some of my other lines of work.

Why? Because they earned it  :-)

We don't hold garage sales.  We donate everything to Goodwill.

However, I go to garage sales where I've learned how to negotiate nicely.

It's hard to get an annoyance tax out of people who don't want to pay anything in the first place. I know of someone who got so mad at a person for insisting on buying a $1.00 plate for 10 cents, that he said, "I'd rather break it than sell it to you for a dime." He then threw it down on the cement and said, "Thank you!" as she walked away. He was done with yard sales after that.

i have held a few yard sales, after we buy donuts, etc - we always lose about 45 cents...anyways, there has been times that we refuse to 'go down' in price for certain annoying shoppers, but then when a nice person comes along, we have no problem slashing the price to get rid of our 'junk' !  haha

Yard sales annoy me....Stopped at a yard sale Saturday to ask about a mirror they had.   I was thinking maybe $3.00 she said $45.00....They have the same one at big lots for $5.00.   The nicer the neighborhood the junkier  and  more expensive the merchandise is.

Been a long time since I had a yard sale.  If I ever do again, I'll do two things differently:

1.  Advertise a "Nudist Yard Sale--absolutely no clothes."

2.  Put an asking price twice what I think the thing is worse on everything, advertise the sale starting at 8 am, and at 8 put up a sign saying "everything half off!"    Take that, earlybirds!

I find there is a "law of posession" at yard sales. The person selling the junk seems to think it is worth a fortune simply because they still own it.

Random,

I love that earlybird idea. Nothing is worse than aggressive people pouncing on your while you're setting your stuff out. I know they're hoping they can catch you while you're still asleep and dazed but please ....

Random

Piece of advice.

Don't offer free coffee and do a nude yard sale at the same time.

I had an estate sale ~ clearly saying "no early birds" . 20 people showed up 1 hour early banging on the door to get in.  They got no deals.

I have some old porcelain small doll parts~ I made an arm and a leg into ear rings. When folks ask "how much ?" I say "a arm and a leg" lol I suppose I *am* the annoyance at the sales.

I guess Schultz does not believe in free speech when the speech espouses a political belief contrary to hers!

midterm2  - huh?

goldi: Schultz did not like the "fellow" who said something negative about the first lady and who implied to Schultz that he liked Fox news.  Schultz made sure she let her readers know she had an Obama/Biden bumper sticker on her garaged vehicle.  Because this fellow opened his mouth and showed himself to not be a Democrat, Schultz discriminated against him and declined to give him the bargains she gave others.  Did Schultz read the Nancy Pelosi playbook?  Or the Karen Bass playbook?  Maybe both?

Just had a yard sale this past weekend! Here's my view on earlybirds: They actually still have money in their pocket to spend that day, and it's my job to help them part with as much of it as I can before they run off to another yard sale. I'd rather be aggressive about closing deals and have somebody spend their entire $10 budget in my (mother-in-law's) driveway than only spend $5 of it and have more stuff left over that I have to drag off to Goodwill at the end of the day anyway. At the end of the day, I think the consumers left feeling good about the deals they got, and I believe we made more money than we would have by trying to sell few items at higher prices (~$160!).

I have NEVER made amount of money on a yard sale.  I think the most I ever made was about 40 bucks and split it with grandson for his part.  It wasn't worth getting up before daylight to price stuff and drag it back.

Piffle.

Daughter and son in law were cleaning out their garage one day and people thought it was a yard sale and just started stopping by..  He started selling them golf clubs and other misc and they took in about 300 bucks.   Maybe I should try that.

Un approved taxation is the only way they COULD have made $250! I know the Schultz's personally. I wonder if they sold the Astronomy photos I took and gave to them years ago?

Wow!  The Schultz personality...I think I have it too.

midterm2: " Schultz made sure she let her readers know she had an Obama/Biden bumper sticker on her garaged vehicle. Because this fellow opened his mouth and showed himself to not be a Democrat, Schultz discriminated against him..."

It wasn't because he was not a Democrat, it was because he insulted Mrs. Obama for no good reason. She pointed out the bumper sticker to show that people should pay attention before insulting others in mixed company. Why would a person spout random insults in front of strangers in the first place?

Motopoet...Besides all the other rhetoric, why aren't you working today so you can support your poor old Mom in her dotage???
