We all know the mid-life crisis stereotype of trying to feel young and sexy again by buying a hot sports car and dumping your spouse for a twenty-something. Don't tell my husband, but I kind of started to understand that mid-life crisis impulse today. I've always had a thing for very little vintage convertibles. The smaller, the better. (Yes, I know. I am a little strange.) I saw  this car I saw for sale in the classifieds.... Triumph, convert . 1967, Spitfire, red with black top,...

My Swedish friend told me firmly this Swedish company's name should be pronounced "EE- KAY- AH". Don't tell her, but I still call it "EYE- KEY-UH" because that's what they say in their own commercials! But however you say it, Ikea has good quality furniture at reasonable prices. The worst part though is having to drive down to LA to pick it up. Here's a deal on some Ikea Ektorp line that will save you a drive over the Grapevine: New Ikea Couches - Tan - Barely Used...

I had to read this classified ad a few times: Backpack Petunia Pickle Bottom $100 331-5994 I didn't get it. Does this mean a Petunia patterned backpack with a Pickle Bottom? Is there some pickle cartoon character like Sponge Bob Squarepants? And what in the world is a Pickle Bottom? I was so confused! So, I turned to my favorite search engine and did a little investigating.  I learned that "Petunia Pickle Bottom" is actually a brand name of a high end baby chic accessories...

As you may have noticed, The Bakersfield Californian has partnered with Yahoo! Hot Jobs to provide online job postings on Bakersfield.com. Hot Jobs also offers a lot of neat bells and whistles to job seekers like creating custom search agents and posting your resume for free to the employer resume database. But when looking postings, how do you know what terms to search for? How do you screen job postings to know which ones to apply for? Where else besides Bakersfield.com and Hot Jobs...

I have friends on the “Coast” that pay almost double in rent for their small apartments than I pay for the mortgage on my three bedroom house. At times, my ego kicks in and I think proudly, “Well, I own a house! I would never pay that much for rent.”   Yet, on scorching hot days like today in this terrible housing market, living in a rented shoebox by the beach sounds mighty appealing. What are your thoughts on housing?   How much of...

I’ve noticed this little golden dog running around my neighborhood without a collar. He seems a bit lost, but happy. He’s always scurrying about with bundles of energy, so I’m not sure if he just got out and is on a neighborhood tour or if he is really searching for food and water. It got me thinking, what should you do if you come across an abandoned or lost pet? One great thing I’ve learned working at The Californian is that you can place a “found”...

Getting more fit and losing weight are goals typically within the top 10 on everyone’s New Year’s resolution list. Of course, most of us give up on our resolutions about a week into the New Year. When I was knee-high to a grasshopper, my golfer Grandfather tried to get me to start playing with him. That stopped abruptly when I was about five years old. For some reason, he thought it was ok for me to drive the golf cart in the country club’s parking lot. That was until I crashed it into the side of his brand new Mercedes. For reasons you can imagine, golf has been a major turn-off for me since then. I do understand what drew my grandfather to it and why it has now...

Learning to ride a bike is a rite of passage. Riding (sans training wheels) is one of those steps we all took to change from little to big kid. It's also one of those rare skills that once you learn, you don't forget. To be honest, I haven't been pedal pushing in many years (except of the stationary bikes at the gym). But watching the Tour de France, I've gotten inspired to start riding again. Outdoors, that is. We don't have the countryside and cities of...

I must admit I’m a car airhead. I know what I need to know to get from point A to point B, but that’s about it.  I’ve got my AAA card, so I feel I’m covered in case problems arise. But, I’ve seen all of these ads on TV lately for a service called CARFAX, a vehicle history reports provider. It got me thinking that I have been really lucky with all of the used cars I’ve ever bought. Somehow, I’ve never got a lemon. Then, I saw the Cadillac...

Back in the day, sewing was a household necessity. You needed to know how to make and mend your clothes and soft goods. But over time, sewing is a skill that became unnecessary to our lives as we have become a society of convinience. Yet recently, with TV Shows like Project Runway and websites like Etsy, sewing is a craft “serging” in popularity. (Sorry, couldn’t resist a bad sewing pun!) Locally, we have an active sewing community and we’re brimming with shops,...

Shoes and purses. They just make an outfit. For some, they are a necessity and for others, an obsession.   I am somewhere in the middle. They’d be an obsession for me if I had the means. I’ve paid full retail price once for a designer purse and at the time, I had buyer's remorse for spending so much money. Even after heavy use during the ten years I've had the purse, it still looks new and I'd definately make the purchase again. The cheap purses...
