Liquidation sale at Russo's Books

Russo’s Books, the city’s only independent book store chain, is closing its downtown location at 1416 17th St. after 12 years in business.

The store in the Haberfelde Building is liquidating all its merchandise. The owner said in the slow economy, there just wasn't enough business to keep all three of the chain's Bakersfield locations open.

The family-owned company still operates two other stores in The Marketplace, 9000 Ming Ave.; and East Hills Mall, 3000 Mall View Rd. Those will remain, as will the Internet sales.

That is depressing to hear. This was where my first books as a local author were sold and the encouragement I received as a writer from the Russo's at that time and thereafter was something only such people who love books could offer.

Sad news indeed.

I got all my books exclusively from the downtown store. I was able to order out of print books Borders and Barnes and Noble wouldn't bother trying to get.

Looks like I'll be treking to the East Hills Mall store from now on.

Downtown is just not a good location for anything except the jail, courts and mental health services.

Sad but true.

Downtown is just not a good location for anything except the jail, courts and mental health services.

So explain all the bars, restaurants, retail stores and professional offices in the downtown area.
