Cheapskate - > Cheapskate -> Discovering the bakery outlet
Discovering the bakery outlet

I've passed by the Oroweat Bakery Outlet at 222 Oak St. many times and not given it much thought. Saturday, I was curious.

I ended up spending $7.27 and walked out with four items that would have cost at least $16.50 elsewhere, according to my price checks. (One item was the raspberry danish pictured to the left that I'm a little too fond of that costs $4.59 in several grocery stores.)

The place is nuts — it seemed like the outlet was practically giving away Entenmann's, Oroweat, Francisco International, Thomas' and other brand-name foods. Items are priced depending on how close it is to the "best if used by" date.

And before anyone says "it's all expired," none of what I picked out had even reached the "best if used by" date.

Here's a paraphrase of my conversation with the clerk:

Clerk: Have you been here before?

Me: No.

Clerk: Well, then I'm going to mark out a whole punch card for you. (The punch card gets you two free items on your next visit.)

Clerk: And today you spent more than $7 so you get a free item from the $7 shelf.

Me: Really? Anything? (I got a whole loaf of bread I'll freeze and use for sandwiches later. That was the item that was closest to the "best if used by" date, and thus free.)

Then she handed me a bunch of coupons for next time. The outlet also has special days — Sunday is Double Punch Day and bargain day; Monday is Double Punch Day; Wednesday is bargain day; Friday is senior day with a 20 percent discount.

i live just up the road from here and get all bread, pizza bases, muffins etc from here.

huge savings indeed.

However, if you live out near Rosedale and Heath, and drive a large SUV, it would be stupid to drive down there to save $8.00.

Live around the corner, been a fan for a long time.

True, OldBlue. People who live far away won't make any savings because of the gas. I've never heard of this bakery, but it sounds interesting. If it weren't so far from me, I'd be interested in stopping by to see what's there. Do you live near Rosedale and Heath, or were you just using that as an example? I can't imagine how you would wind up in that part of "town."

We don't buy bread from the store anymore. Recently we have bought a few loaves of rosemary bread, but that's about all the bread we've bought this year. We make our own loaves of bread and rolls, which is  a lot cheaper than buying from the store. Plus, it tastes SO much better than store-bought bread.

I am familiar with store, I've shopped there now and again. But with the price of gas, driving across town just isn't practical. It is not, however, the only bakery outlet in town. I think there's another on S. Chester.

Used to be one quite near my house that I frequented--but alas, went out of business.  Will have to stop by this place when I'm next there.  It's near Drinking Liberally.

I competely understand on the gas prices!

Since I don't live right by the outlet, I timed my trip Saturday, stopping there on my way to an event I was attending. The outlet was on my way there.

I like your idea about baking your own bread!

When I was a kid, there was a bread outlet store downtown that my mother and I used to walk to on a regular basis. The Orowheat one is a bit out of the way for me, so I just try to stock up when there's a sale at one of the two grocery stores between home and work. Usually one or the other will have a sale going on 2 weeks out of the month.

And homemade bread tastes TOO much better than store-bought... it tempts me to eat it as a snack, not just for lunch or toast. Then, before I know it, I've eaten a whole loaf in a couple of days by myself. This is not good for the waistline.

There's a Rainbow outlet on N. Chester and another on District Blvd off Stine.   They have all the Hostess stuff and a gravy mix that is the same kind used in almost all restaurants.  AND they sell the biscuit mix too if you want to shortcut.  Gravies are white, white peppered, brown and chicken or turkey.  Maybe both but I don't use that kind.  Since I cook for one, I use a half pack of gravy mix at a time and put the other half in the freezer.  If I don't eat all the gravy I make, I put in in the fridge for the next day.  It's called Southeastern Mills.  Really good stuff.  I buy all my bread there too of course.  Orowheat is in the neighborhood where I work some days, I'll have to try to remember it too.

Nancy - that's a Wonder Bread outlet on N. Chester and Arvin. YUCK. I hate wonder bread. I used to go to the Rainbow Bread store on District when I worked near Stockdale/Calif. Ave. That was the good old days!

And so it is Bako...I stand corrected.   When I first moved to this side of town I was so pleased to find the bread I always bought at Longs or the Rainbow outlet.  Then they changed somehow and stopped carrying my favorite holey bread.  I hate have bread so always bought the cheapies.  I agree I don't like this bread as well as Rainbow either but don't know where to find it anymore.  Still, they both carry my gravy mix so I'm relatively happy.

I also live by the Outlet and have been meaning to stop by there.  This'll get me started.  Thanks.

RF, thanks for the plug.  If the hours are right, that could work out.
